Book No Extension without Representation Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Collective Bargaining

Download or read book No Extension without Representation Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Collective Bargaining written by Alexander Hijzen and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-07-21 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many countries, notably across Europe, collective bargaining coverage is enhanced by government-issued extensions that widen the reach of collective agreements beyond their signatory parties to all firms and workers in the same sector. This paper analyses the causal impact of such extensions on employment using a natural experiment in Portugal: the immediate suspension by the government that took office in 21 June 2011 of the (until then) nearly automatic extensions. The combination of this suspension and the time needed for processing the extension applications resulted in a sharp and unanticipated decline in the extension probability of agreements signed several month earlier around 1 March 2011. Our results, based on a regression discontinuity design and matched employer-employee-agreement panel data, suggest that extensions had a negative impact on employment growth. Moreover, the effects tend to be concentrated among non-affiliated firms. The lack of representativeness of employer associations is a potentially important factor behind the adverse effect of extensions. Another is the role of retro-activity in combination with the administrative delay in processing extensions. This is particularly relevant in the context of a recession.

Book Central Extensions Galois Groups and Ideal Class Groups of Number Fields

Download or read book Central Extensions Galois Groups and Ideal Class Groups of Number Fields written by Albrecht Fröhlich and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1983 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes deal with a set of interrelated problems and results in algebraic number theory, in which there has been renewed activity in recent years. The underlying tool is the theory of the central extensions and, in most general terms, the underlying aim is to use class field theoretic methods to reach beyond Abelian extensions. One purpose of this book is to give an introductory survey, assuming the basic theorems of class field theory as mostly recalled in section 1 and giving a central role to the Tate cohomology groups $\hat H{}^{-1}$. The principal aim is, however, to use the general theory as developed here, together with the special features of class field theory over $\mathbf Q$, to derive some rather strong theorems of a very concrete nature, with $\mathbf Q$ as base field. The specialization of the theory of central extensions to the base field $\mathbf Q$ is shown to derive from an underlying principle of wide applicability. The author describes certain non-Abelian Galois groups over the rational field and their inertia subgroups, and uses this description to gain information on ideal class groups of absolutely Abelian fields, all in entirely rational terms. Precise and explicit arithmetic results are obtained, reaching far beyond anything available in the general theory. The theory of the genus field, which is needed as background as well as being of independent interest, is presented in section 2. In section 3, the theory of central extension is developed. The special features over ${\mathbf Q}$ are pointed out throughout. Section 4 deals with Galois groups, and applications to class groups are considered in section 5. Finally, section 6 contains some remarks on the history and literature, but no completeness is attempted.

Book Extensions to the No Core Shell Model

Download or read book Extensions to the No Core Shell Model written by Michael Karl Gerhard Kruse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensions to the No-Core Shell Model presents three extensions to the No-Core Shell Model (NCSM) that allow for calculations of heavier nuclei, specifically for the p-shell nuclei. The Importance-Truncated NCSM (IT-NCSM) formulated on arguments of multi-configurational perturbation theory selects a small set of basis states from the initially large basis space in which the Hamiltonian is diagonalized. Previous IT-NCSM calculations have proven reliable, however, there has been no thorough investigation of the inherent error in the truncated IT-NCSM calculations. This thesis provides a detailed study of IT-NCSM calculations and compares them to full NCSM calculations to judge the accuracy of IT-NCSM in heavier nuclei. When IT-NCSM calculations are performed, one often needs to extrapolate the ground-state energy from the finite basis (or model) spaces to the full NCSM model space. In this thesis a careful investigation of the extrapolation procedures was performed. On a related note, extrapolations in the NCSM are commonplace, but up to recently did not have the ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) physics under control. This work additionally presents a method that maps the NCSM parameters into an effective-field theory inspired framework, in which the UV and IR physics are treated appropriately. The NCSM is well-suited to describe bound-state properties of nuclei, but is not well-adapted to describe loosely bound systems, such as the exotic nuclei near the neutron drip line. With the inclusion of the Resonating Group Method (RGM), the NCSM / RGM can provide a first-principles description of exotic nuclei and the first extension of the NCSM.

Book Legal Knowledge and Information Systems

Download or read book Legal Knowledge and Information Systems written by IOS Press and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the same way that it has become part of all our lives, computer technology is now integral to the work of the legal profession. The JURIX Foundation has been organizing annual international conferences in the area of computer science and law since 1988, and continues to support cutting-edge research and applications at the interface between law and computer technology. This book contains the 16 full papers and 6 short papers presented at the 26th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2013), held in December 2013 in Bologna, Italy. The papers cover a wide range of research topics and application areas concerning the advanced management of legal information and knowledge, including computational techniques for: classifying and extracting information from, and detecting conflicts in, regulatory texts; modeling legal argumentation and representing case narratives; improving the retrieval of legal information and extracting information from legal case texts; conducting e-discovery; and, applications involving intellectual property and IP licensing, online dispute resolution, delivering legal aid to the public and organizing the administration of local law and regulations. The book will be of interest to all those associated with the legal profession whose work involves the use of computer technology.
