Book Hierarchical Forest Management Planning

Download or read book Hierarchical Forest Management Planning written by Gregory Paradis and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hierarchical forest management (HFM) planning process on public land may currently be failing on two levels. At the top level, HFM may not be providing credible assurance of long-term sustainability of timber supply and forest ecosystem integrity. At a lower level, HFM may be failing to fully realise the value-creation potential from timber-harvesting activities by over-constraining the harvest planning problem. These failures can be traced back to unrealistic assumptions implicitly embedded into long-term wood supply optimisation models, which may explain why this problem has received little attention in the literature. We model the hierarchical forest management planning process as a two-phase rolling-horizon iterative principal-agent problem, illustrate failure scenarios of the status quo planning process, and propose an improved wood supply model formulation. The classic wood supply optimisation model formulation (i.e. conventional even-flow wood supply maximisation model) does not explicitly consider the profit-maximising behaviour of the industrial fibre consumer, but instead implicitly assumes the complete consumption of the wood supply in every planning period, regardless of fibre type or value creation potential. We extend the status quo wood supply model to explicitly anticipate industrial fibre consumption behaviour, thereby improving the likelihood of the wood supply being entirely consumed in the first planning period, thus restoring the validity of the total-consumption assumption that is embedded in the long-term model formulation. We model the principal-agent relationship as a bilevel optimisation problem, where the top level (leader) represents the government wood supply planning process, and the lower level (follower) represents the timber consumption process (i.e. value creation network, or VCN). We show that the bilevel model formulation mitigates the risk of long-term wood supply failure and improves the credibility of the wood supply planning process. The bilevel wood supply model and solution methodology presented here constitute a technically feasible alternative to the methods currently used. Our bilevel model and iterative simulation framework represent a step forward in terms of value-driven forest management planning. Explicit integration of industrial objectives and constraints early on in the wood supply planning process could facilitate government-industry collaboration to realise the full value-creation potential of the public forest resource.

Book Performance of Bio based Building Materials

Download or read book Performance of Bio based Building Materials written by Dennis Jones and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of Bio-based Building Materials provides guidance on the use of bio-based building materials (BBBM) with respect to their performance. The book focuses on BBBM currently present on the European market. The state-of-the-art is presented regarding material properties, recommended uses, performance expectancies, testing methodology, and related standards. Chapters cover both ‘old and traditional’ BBBM since quite a few of them are experiencing a comeback on the market. Promising developments that could become commercial in the near future are presented as well. The book will be a valuable reference resource for those working in the bio-based materials research community, architects and agencies dealing with sustainable construction, and graduate students in civil engineering. Takes a unique approach to bio-based materials and presents a broad overview of the topics on relevant areas necessary for application and promotion in construction Contains a general description, notable properties related to performance, and applications Presents standards that are structured according to performance types

Book National Forest Inventories

Download or read book National Forest Inventories written by Claude Vidal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the current state and good practices of national forest inventories in monitoring wood resources and demonstrates pathways for harmonisation and improved common reporting. Beyond a general overview over availability and use of wood resources in different countries, it provides a unique collection of original contributions from national forest inventory experts with in-depth descriptions of current NFI methods in assessing wood availability and wood use in European countries, and selected countries from America and Asia. The main topics are national definitions and improvements in common reporting of forests available for wood supply, stem quality and assortments, estimation of change including growth and drain, and tree resources outside forest land. The book is a must-have for everyone who is contributing to national forest inventories either methodologically or operatively, for people who want or need to understand national forest inventory provided data and information on the availability of wood resources. By providing profound knowledge it is a valuable basis for scientists involved in scenario modelling and analysing effects of climate change, as well as individuals in private organisations and public administrations promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and the potential of green economy.

Book excerpt: This publication highlights the use of wood for energy and includes the most recent statistics on wood energy markets across the UNECE region. It aims to communicate the relevance of wood energy in the region and help bridge information about the forest and energy sectors. It also intends to offer some of the best-available information on the role that wood energy can play in various sectors to support environmental, energy, and socio-economic strategies toward a greener economy. It focuses on commercial wood energy uses in the UNECE including energy generated for cooking, heating and electricity generation.

Book The Management of Industrial Forest Plantations

Download or read book The Management of Industrial Forest Plantations written by José G. Borges and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 544 pages.
