Book Turbulence Measurements in a Two Dimensional Compressible Wake

Download or read book Turbulence Measurements in a Two Dimensional Compressible Wake written by A. Demetriades and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes turbulence measurements in a compressible, two-dimensional wake of a slender, adiabatic model. The constant-current hot-wire anemometer was used to map the axial and lateral variations of the following properties: velocity and density (temperature) fluctuations, their cross correlation coefficient, their one-dimensional spectral functions and their longitudinal integral scales. The results are generally in agreement with predictions of the Dynamic Equilibrium Hypothesis by which scaling laws the wake structure behind vehicles at all speeds and altitudes might be predicted. In particular, the axis values of the velocity and density fluctuations asymptotically become constant fractions of the velocity and density deficits, and they become anti-correlated; however the lateral distributions are somewhat different from the equivalent distributions at low speeds. The off-axis maxima of the fluctuations are not located at the region of maximum shear. The integral scales of velocity proportional to the wake growth. The one-dimensional spectra were not followed beyond a frequency limited by the system, but since the Reynolds number of turbulence is low, no spectral activity was expected beyond the integral scale. Between the axis and the wake edge the spectra are distorted by a peak with a wavelength slightly smaller than the wake width, which is more prominant in the density rather than the velocity and which is probably indicative of a non-random turbulent front. Book Two Dimensional Turbulent Wakes

Download or read book Two Dimensional Turbulent Wakes written by Canada. Defence Research Board. Reprints and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations of mean motion indicate that two-dimensional turbulent wakes, when subjected to appropriately tailored adverse pressure gradients, can be self-preserving. An experimental examination of two nearly self-preserving wakes is reported. Mean velocity, longitudinal and lateral turbulence intensity, intermittency and shear stress distributions were measured and compared with Townsend's data from the small-deficit undistorted wake. In comparison with the undistorted case, the present wakes have slightly lower turbulent intensities and significantly lower shear stresses, all quantities being nondimensionalized by a local velocity scale taken as the maximum mean velocity deficit. A consideration of the reasons for the shear stress reduction leads to an expression from which the shear stresses in any symmetrical free equilibrium shear flow can be found. This relationship is used to calculate the rate of growth in the measured wakes, with reasonable success. (Author).

Book Measured and Calculated Mean flow Properties of a Two dimensional Hypersonic Turbulent Wake

Download or read book Measured and Calculated Mean flow Properties of a Two dimensional Hypersonic Turbulent Wake written by Richard Dirk Wagner and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypersonic turbulent wake produced by a wedge was studied experimentally and its properties were compared with predictions obtained from a numerical computation procedure. In the computation procedure several models for the eddy viscosity formulation of the turbulent transport were examined. Conventional-defect models and a modified mixing-length model were found to yield good predictions of the experimental data. The classical mixing-length model gave unrealistic results. The experimental data displayed similarity when velocity and temperature defects were scaled by the maximum defects and the transverse coordinate was scaled by the velocity-defect half-width.

Book Encyclopedia of Fluid Mechanics Supplement 1

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Fluid Mechanics Supplement 1 written by Nicholas P Cheremisinoff and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 1993-05-03 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This supplement to the comprehensive series "Encyclopedia of Fluid Mechanics" steps back from the topical approach to fluid mechanics, and embraces the overall subject from an entirely mathematical viewpoint. Within the pure science of mathematics, the motion of particles and fluids is described and studies without the uncertainty that can accompany experimental investigations. This volume addresses the mathematical details of model formation and development, which constitutes the basis for numerical experimentation. It is intended to stimulate and report current and emerging concepts in pure research on flow dynamics.

Download or read book Particle Image Velocimetry written by Ronald J. Adrian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking text and reference book on twenty-first-century classical physics and its applications This first-year graduate-level text and reference book covers the fundamental concepts and twenty-first-century applications of six major areas of classical physics that every masters- or PhD-level physicist should be exposed to, but often isn't: statistical physics, optics (waves of all sorts), elastodynamics, fluid mechanics, plasma physics, and special and general relativity and cosmology. Growing out of a full-year course that the eminent researchers Kip Thorne and Roger Blandford taught at Caltech for almost three decades, this book is designed to broaden the training of physicists. Its six main topical sections are also designed so they can be used in separate courses, and the book provides an invaluable reference for researchers. Presents all the major fields of classical physics except three prerequisites: classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and elementary thermodynamics Elucidates the interconnections between diverse fields and explains their shared concepts and tools Focuses on fundamental concepts and modern, real-world applications Takes applications from fundamental, experimental, and applied physics; astrophysics and cosmology; geophysics, oceanography, and meteorology; biophysics and chemical physics; engineering and optical science and technology; and information science and technology Emphasizes the quantum roots of classical physics and how to use quantum techniques to elucidate classical concepts or simplify classical calculations Features hundreds of color figures, some five hundred exercises, extensive cross-references, and a detailed index An online illustration package is available
