Book Advances in Probabilistic and Other Parsing Technologies

Download or read book Advances in Probabilistic and Other Parsing Technologies written by H. Bunt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parsing technology is concerned with finding syntactic structure in language. In parsing we have to deal with incomplete and not necessarily accurate formal descriptions of natural languages. Robustness and efficiency are among the main issuesin parsing. Corpora can be used to obtain frequency information about language use. This allows probabilistic parsing, an approach that aims at both robustness and efficiency increase. Approximation techniques, to be applied at the level of language description, parsing strategy, and syntactic representation, have the same objective. Approximation at the level of syntactic representation is also known as underspecification, a traditional technique to deal with syntactic ambiguity. In this book new parsing technologies are collected that aim at attacking the problems of robustness and efficiency by exactly these techniques: the design of probabilistic grammars and efficient probabilistic parsing algorithms, approximation techniques applied to grammars and parsers to increase parsing efficiency, and techniques for underspecification and the integration of semantic information in the syntactic analysis to deal with massive ambiguity. The book gives a state-of-the-art overview of current research and development in parsing technologies. In its chapters we see how probabilistic methods have entered the toolbox of computational linguistics in order to be applied in both parsing theory and parsing practice. The book is both a unique reference for researchers and an introduction to the field for interested graduate students.

Book Text Speech and Dialogue

Download or read book Text Speech and Dialogue written by Petr Sojka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop series on Text, Speech and Dialogue originated in 1998 with the ?rst TSD1998 held in Brno, Czech Republic. This year’s TSD2000, already the third in the series, returns to Brno and to its organizers from the Faculty of Informatics at the Masaryk University. As shown by the ever growing interest in TSD series, this annual workshop developed into the prime meeting of speech and language researchers from both sides of the former Iron Curtain, which provides a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the current activities in all aspects of language communication and to witness the amazing vitality of researchers from the former East Block countries. Thanks need to be extended to all who continue to make the TSD workshop series such a success: ?rst, to the authors themselves, without whom TSD2000 would not exist; next, to all organizations that support TSD2000, among them the International Speech Communication Association, the Faculty of Informatics at the Masaryk University in Brno and the Faculty of Applied Sciences, West Bohemia University in Plzen; ? and last but not least,to the organizers and members of the Program Committee who spentmuch effort to make TSD2000 success and who reviewed 131 contributions submitted from all corners of the world and accepted 75 out of them for presentation at the workshop. This book is evidence of the success of all involved.

Book Language Processing with Perl and Prolog

Download or read book Language Processing with Perl and Prolog written by Pierre M. Nugues and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-06 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The areas of natural language processing and computational linguistics have continued to grow in recent years, driven by the demand to automatically process text and spoken data. With the processing power and techniques now available, research is scaling up from lab prototypes to real-world, proven applications. This book teaches the principles of natural language processing, first covering practical linguistics issues such as encoding and annotation schemes, defining words, tokens and parts of speech and morphology, as well as key concepts in machine learning, such as entropy, regression and classification, which are used throughout the book. It then details the language-processing functions involved, including part-of-speech tagging using rules and stochastic techniques, using Prolog to write phase-structure grammars, syntactic formalisms and parsing techniques, semantics, predicate logic and lexical semantics and analysis of discourse and applications in dialogue systems. A key feature of the book is the author's hands-on approach throughout, with sample code in Prolog and Perl, extensive exercises, and a detailed introduction to Prolog. The reader is supported with a companion website that contains teaching slides, programs and additional material. The second edition is a complete revision of the techniques exposed in the book to reflect advances in the field the author redesigned or updated all the chapters, added two new ones and considerably expanded the sections on machine-learning techniques.

Book Probabilistic Indexing for Information Search and Retrieval in Large Collections of Handwritten Text Images

Download or read book Probabilistic Indexing for Information Search and Retrieval in Large Collections of Handwritten Text Images written by and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive presentation of a recently introduced framework, named "probabilistic indexing" (PrIx), for searching text in large collections of document images and other related applications. It fosters the development of new search engines for effective information retrieval from manuscripts which, however, lack the electronic text (transcripts) that would typically be required for such search and retrieval tasks. The book is structured into 11 chapters and three appendices. The first two chapters briefly outline the necessary fundamentals and state of the art in pattern recognition, statistical decision theory, and handwritten text recognition. Chapter 3 presents approaches for indexing (as opposed to spotting) each region of a handwritten text image which is likely to contain a word. Next, Chapter 4 describes models adopted for handwritten text in images, namely hidden Markov models, convolutional and recurrent neural networks and language models, and provides full details of weighted finite-state transducer (WFST) concepts and methods, needed in further chapters of the book. Chapter 5 explains the set of techniques and algorithms developed to generate image probabilistic indexes which allow for fast search and retrieval of textual information in the indexed images. Chapter 6 then presents experimental evaluations of the proposed framework and algorithms on different traditional benchmark datasets and compares them with other approaches, while Chapter 7 reviews the most popular keyword-spotting approaches. Chapter 8 explains how PrIx can support classical free-text search tools, while Chapter 9 presents new methods that use PrIx not only for searching, but also to deal with text analytics and other related natural language processing and information extraction tasks. Chapter 10 shows how the proposed solutions can be used to effectively index very large collections of handwritten document images, before Chapter 11 eventually summarizes the book and suggests promising lines of future research. The appendices detail the necessary mathematical foundations for the work and presents details of the text image collections and datasets used in the experiments throughout the book. This book is written for researchers and (post-)graduate students in pattern recognition and information retrieval. It will also be of interest to people in areas like history, criminology, or psychology who need technical support to evaluate, understand or decode historical or contemporary handwritten text.
