Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extended-source calibration area was set up in the Nevada Test Site area to encourage a standardization of airborne radiometric instrumentation among several government agencies. and private companies. A simulated plane-source array was laid out with positions at 100-ft intervals in the form of a square 2000 ft on a side. For ground measurements a smaller square array of 100 positions at 10-ft intervals was placed in the center of the large array. Two sets of sources were used in the array. Cobalt-60 and cesium-137 sources of 4.5 and 15 mc, respectively, were available for the large array and sources one hundredth of these values in the smaller array. Point sources of Co(exp 60), Cs(exp 137), and I(exp 131) of the order of 2 curies each were available for comparison with the area sources. Measurements 3 ft above the area sources indicated 200 micronr/hr for Co(exp 60) and 225 micronr/hr for Cs(exp 137). Four government agencies and one private company participated in an intercalibration exercise during November 1960. Various types and sizes of aircraft from a Cessna 172 to a Douglas Dc-3 were used. Various instrumentation devices, mostly scintillation type detectors, were tested. Flights ranging from 100- to 1000-ft altitude included background measurements, instrument calibration, intercalibration, proof-testing equipment, comparison of point- and area-source measurements, measurements of air attenuation and buildup of gamma radiation, and gamma-ray spectral measurements.

Book excerpt: A small but intense source of 14 Mev neutrons is to be mounted in the hoisting mechanism of the 1500-ft BREN tower at the Nevada Test Site. The experimental program, designated Operation HENRE, will be conducted during the spring and summer of 1965 and will be sufficiently comprehensive to characterize the radiation fields. In addition, a series of applied shielding experiments will include configurations of interest to both military and civilian laboratories. It is important that data be accumulated which will assist in understanding the apparent uncertainties in existing transport calculations, especially data which will give approximate values for effective neutron cross sections for air-over-ground transport. The neutron source will be operated at heights from about 25 ft to 1500 ft above the air-ground interface. The average neutron yield during operational periods of about 4 hours is expected to be equal to or greater than 10 13 n/sec.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Aerial Radiological Measuring Survey (ARMS) of the U.S. Army Chemical Corps School, Radiological Instruction Area, Fort McClellan, Ala., was made for the Civil Effects Test Operations, Division of Biology and Medicine, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, on Jan. 15,1962, by Edgerton, Germeshausen AND Grier, Inc., (EG AND G). The primary purpose of the survey was to test and evaluate the operation of the ARMS-II system over a high-intensity radiation field of small area. The radiation area is about 1000 yards long and less than 300 yards wide. The sources (Co60) produce a dose rate of about 300 mr/hr along the center line. Data from an areal survey of the range were contoured to show the distribution of the gamma-ray flux at 500 ft above the ground. The count rate over the center of the range was greater than 15,000 counts/sec on the low-sensitivity detector. Data on the air attenuation of gamma rays were collected from flights along the center line of the range at altitudes ranging from 100 to 3500 ft above the ground. Maximum count rates on low sensitivity ranged from more than 50,000 counts/sec at 100 ft to 1300 counts/sec at 1300 ft. Maximum count rates on high sensitivity ranged from more than 50,000 counts/sec at 1500 ft to about 2000 counts/sec at 3500 ft above the ground.
