Book excerpt: This exhibition reevaluates Southern Song art in the context of the geography, cultural traditions and historical references of West Lake in Hangzhou. The Southern Song (1127 - 1279) capital of Lin'an, located near beautiful West Lake, was the center of a dynasty that looked largely inward. In this regard, the story of Southern Song art can be presented in a manner that is site-specific. The exhibition includes over 50 paintings (album leaves, hanging scrolls and fan paintings) and lustrous ceramics from premier collections, from the U.S. and abroad, and utilizes maps and literary accounts to further emphasize the influence of place in Southern Song art from a period known to many as one of the most 'exquisite moments' in art history.

Book THE COMPLETE CLAYHANGER SERIES Clayhanger Hilda Lessways These Twain The Roll Call

Download or read book THE COMPLETE CLAYHANGER SERIES Clayhanger Hilda Lessways These Twain The Roll Call written by Arnold Bennett and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 1552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ebook is a collection of series of novels by Arnold Bennett, published between 1910 and 1918. Though the series is commonly referred to as a "trilogy", it actually consists of four books; the first three novels were released in one single volume as The Clayhanger Family in 1925. The books are set in Bennett's usual setting of "the 5 Towns", a thinly-disguised version of the six towns of "the Potteries" which amalgamated (at the time of which Bennett was writing) into the borough of Stoke-on-Trent. Buildings described in the novels are still identifiable in Burslem. The novels are a coming-of-age story set in the Midlands of Victorian England, following Edwin Clayhanger as he leaves school, takes over the family business, and falls in love. The second book was Hilda Lessways, which paralleled Edwin Clayhanger's story from the point of view of his eventual wife, Hilda. These Twain, the third in the Clayhanger series, chronicles the married life of Edwin and Hilda. Edwin, now released from the controlling influence of his father, finds himself free to run his business and his life, a freedom that is diminished by his wife's caprices. The fourth book, ''The Roll-Call'', concerns the young life of Clayhanger's stepson, George. George Edwin Cannon - he soon drops the surname Clayhanger, given to him upon his mother's marriage - is an architect, and represents what his stepfather Edwin Clayhanger wished to become. The characters of Edwin and Hilda are not developed further in this book: Edwin - now elevated to Alderman - appears only briefly. The central character displays an unattractive arrogance because of the wealth behind him.

Book Singularity and Transnational Poetics

Download or read book Singularity and Transnational Poetics written by Birgit Mara Kaiser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade ‘singularity’ has been a prominent term in a broad range of fields, ranging from philosophy to literary and cultural studies to science and technology studies. This volume intervenes in this broad discussion of singularity and its various implications, proposing to explore the term for its specific potential in the study of literature. Singularity and Transnational Poetics brings together scholars working in the fields of literary and cultural studies, translation studies, and transnational literatures. The volume’s central concern is to explore singularity as a conceptual tool for the comparative study of contemporary literatures beyond national frameworks, and by implication, as a tool to analyze human existence. Contributors explore how singularity might move our conceptions of cultural identity from prevailing frameworks of self/other toward the premises of being as ‘singular plural’. Through a close reading of transnational literatures from Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and South Africa, this collection offers a new approach to reading literature that will challenge a reader’s established notions of identity, individuality, communicability, and social cohesion.
