Book The Ode Less Travelled

Download or read book The Ode Less Travelled written by Stephen Fry and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedian and actor Stephen Fry's witty and practical guide, now in paperback, gives the aspiring poet or student the tools and confidence to write and understand poetry. Stephen Fry believes that if one can speak and read English, one can write poetry. In The Ode Less Travelled, he invites readers to discover the delights of writing poetry for pleasure and provides the tools and confidence to get started. Through enjoyable exercises, witty insights, and simple step-by-step advice, Fry introduces the concepts of Metre, Rhyme, Form, Diction, and Poetics. Most of us have never been taught to read or write poetry, and so it can seem mysterious and intimidating. But Fry, a wonderfully competent, engaging teacher and a writer of poetry himself, sets out to correct this problem by explaining the various elements of poetry in simple terms, without condescension. Fry's method works, and his enthusiasm is contagious as he explores different forms of poetry: the haiku, the ballad, the villanelle, and the sonnet, among many others. Along the way, he introduces us to poets we've heard of but never read. The Ode Less Travelled is not just the survey course you never took in college, it's a lively celebration of poetry that makes even the most reluctant reader want to pick up a pencil and give it a try.

Download or read book Poetry from the Heart written by DenHagan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains over twenty-eight different types of poetry, with explanations and examples of each type. Many of my poems are romantic, such as "My Beloved," "Ode to Melissa," "To Love a Woman," "My Heart's Desire," "Love," and "My Love." While others are inspirational, like "Forgiveness," "Hope," "The Seven Virtues," "Empathy," and "Kindness." Still others are philosophical in nature, such as my poems "Living," "True Freedom," "Who Knows What Tomorrow Brings," and "The State of the Economy." My kyrielle poem "Life" could be said to be both inspirational and philosophical. Some of my poems are educational, like "The Benefits of Reading," which extols the virtues of reading, and "To Be Young Again," which talks about nutrition and exercise. Some are family-oriented poems, such as my poem "Little Bit," which I wrote for my niece Kristin, or "Camping with Younger Brother," which I wrote for my brother Craig, or "Little Child," which I wrote for all the little ones in the world. Other poems are devoted to nature like my "Froggy," "Turtle," "Tornado," and "Mother Nature" poems or to mankind in general, such as "Earth on Which We Live" and "True Happiness." And others were written with some fun in mind, like the poem "Nude" I wrote in response to an online contest to rhyme the last word in each line with the word nude. ("Birthday Lesson" is another fun poem like this.) I also did a series of seven poems on each of "the seven deadly sins," where I used archaic language to spoof each of these "sins," which unfortunately often plague mankind. I truly hope you will enjoy reading the poems contained in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is me, Anwer Ghanim; a farmer from the south where the strangeness had drowned in the gulf. My voice is a watery tale and my yearning is an absent moment. Someday I had crossed into that sorcerous riverbank with a boat of silence. I had looked at the face of the field when it chanted its song. At that time, I had met the travelers’ souls which gave me their treasure. They gifted my ribs unforgettable beats and hid in my pocket their eternal secrets.

Book excerpt: Endless Travel is a collection of expressive narrative prose poems. The travel of our souls is an innate desire. Just as we cannot live without food, we cannot live without this traveling desire. One of the pages of travel life is writing which can reach the land of hope and illuminates dark areas. Beautiful writing, like poetry, can change our awareness of world by its traveling features that make us fly with joy and pleasure. In our deep interior there are travel areas where everything means everything, and when we talk about something, we talk about something else. In this area and at this level, what happened is the travel of feelings, meanings and impression. Writing becomes sometime a great travel, and here shows the creativity of poetry. From this point of view, writing is a travel, and our souls use creative writing in that wide traveling. The idea may wear many dresses to show itself and the writer should listen to its voice and take care of its wishes. What is an expressive narrative? Expressive narrative poetry is prose poetry written narratively and horizontally such as story and essay but with individual expressive depth and a pure private vision and narrating the poetic elements with distinction distant from the narration of events and narrative characters. The expressive narrative has a magic that cannot be described and it is the text of the future of all creative literary writing. In the future, it will turn into an expressive narration because it is broad and can accommodate all forms of expression.
