Book Expressive English Classic Reprint

Download or read book Expressive English Classic Reprint written by James C. Fernald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expressive English Foremost in colonization, at the front in industrial and commercial achievement, possessed by that impulse Of actual doing in the concrete world which we call practical, full of the enthusiasm Of freedom for each individual life, and yet with that power of combination that can cement millions scattered far over land and sea into the cohesion Of an empire or a world-republic, spoken by more human beings than any other tongue now or in ages past existing among men, the number Of persons using it being credibly estimated at one hundred and fifty millions, the English language must beyond all others seek and attain fulness Of expression. It presses close up to the foremost line of the world's advance, to be ever ready with a new word or phrase for every new thought, discovery, invention, or achieve ment. Voices from every range Of human endeavor and every outreach Of human intellect are calling the lan guage on to express - express - express, ever more com prehensively and minutely all the shades and lines of thought and feeling, now plain and direct as a concrete highway, now toilsomely ascending as a mountain path, or yet again diversified with flower and shrub and rock and light and shade and sudden windings as a wood land road. Its ideal of utterance has come 'to be, not method, measure, melody, but meaning. Fine writ ing, once the ideal Of many young writers, is now disesteemed. The best speaking or writing of English will be done always by asking What do I really mean to say? Or What do I most deeply want to say? In other phrase, What for my purpose can words now and here best express? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language and Its Grammar In view of such a necessity in high and normal schools, the author combines in this book the history and derivation of English forms of speech with an analysis of the language and its functions. If the technical terms (which are employed because only by them can the science of language he presented) are mastered in the beginning, the student will find no difficulty in following the author's method to'the end. It will be easy to trace the logical consistency of the language with itself, and the harmony of its develop ment, which together give our glorious English tongue its expansive and expressive power. It will also be ap parent how this language has been able to subordinate all the accidents of an increasing vocabulary to the normal functions of a generous and flexible continuity of life. While this book is especially designed for normal and training schools and teacher-training classes in high schools, it is hoped that it will be found. Valuable as a means of self-help to large numbers of teachers who are striving to secure a better preparation for their work. It is thought that it is also well adapted for use in the summer schools which are now so prominent a fea ture of the educational work of the country. Book English Readers Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Readers Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by J. M. D. Meiklejohn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Readers, Vol. 3 The third book contains longer lessons than the Second Book, more difficult words, and more literary phrases. But care has been taken that the style should at the same time be so clear, that the sentences may be read without strain. For this reason, also, the sentences are in general short; and the sense of them may be caught at once without too great effort. The lessons have been selected and prepared first to interest and attract, second to instruct and elevate. A vast fund of practical, general information is contained in the book, but it is given in such a style as to make the reading-hour one of the most pleasant of the day to the pupils. In a book of this kind there must always be a necessity for matter which naturally pro motes lively reading. This necessity has been recognized and amply provided for in this Third Book. For this and other rea sons, it will be found that children who have been judiciously carried through this book will have acquired good habits of expressive reading. Special attention is directed to the illustrations, and to the articles relating to Canadian History and progress. The Exercises, which have been carefully thought out, are so contrived as to give the pupils views of the functions of nouns, verbs, and adjectives from different stand-points; and explana tions of literary phrases have not been forgotten. It will be Observed that certain grammatical terms and distinctions are brought forward in these pages, but it is important to note that only those matters Of grammar are introduced which are most inseparably related to the correct or the intelligent use Of language. The aim Of the student Of this book is not the learning Of a science, but the com mand Of an art. Composition is synthetic, creative, expressive, flowing. In the composition work, therefore, it is essential to keep down to a minimum the number Of technical terms introduced, since the attitude of mind required for the analysis and discrimination belonging to the grammatical point of view might hinder the child's advance in the art he is studying. Book English Language and Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Language and Literature Classic Reprint written by L. E. Horning and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Language and Literature The sounds of a language may be united to form syllables, and these united form words. But not all syllables have equal value, because some have strong stress or accent, some medium stress and some weak stress (usually called unaccented). Indeed, the same syllable of the same word may not always have the same stress. For example, we may use Indeed with varioiis intonations to express various feelings, and the stress and vowel sounds will alter in each case though the spelling remain the same. A simple sentence such as Where are you going? May be inter preted in at least four different ways, and have change of stress with each. But some languages do not use stress or accent at all, but rather pitch or intonation to indicate the relative importance of syllables of words. Intonation and stress are so difierent that it is all but impossible for a per son born to the musical language to learn to speak a language with 'stress or expiratory accent correctly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Putnam's Minute-a-Day English for Busy People A book of supper-table fun; language games, for school and home; items for the day's last minutes, founded upon the law of association, the law of emphasis, correct forms of expression, and the preferred pronunciation and Spelling. It is my contention that a person interested in securing an accurate and effective form of English expression can accomplish this if he will give to the task at least one minute a day. The law of association makes it an easy mat ter to remember the birthday of anyone if that birthday comes, for instance, upon April first. Where the correct form only of an expression or of a word is given, the mind can work rapidly, confidently, and easily. Hence the elimination, so far as possible, of all incorrect words and expressions, all forms of Do not say. Here the incorrect forms appear, if at all, in the titles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herself Ladies who soliloquize are rare, and pure English ladies rarer; and to the attentive listener the voice of this person - a tired little timbre it had, even when she was at her liveliest - might have been perceived to bear an accent: a lilt or song of a corner of that island which is least English of the three. A native of Kerry would have claimed the voice, yet stood in doubt; for the manner of other lands had overlaid it, and it was more a reminiscence than an actuality. Some of the expressive gesture of France went with it, and withal a faint American blurr upon the r's. But the whole speech had a humor ous decision which blent all into a character, quite at war with the fatigued indifference that hung on voice and utterance. Or so it seemed to a bearded Englishman of middle age who overheard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good English in Good Form When the newspapers so frequently amuse their read ers by exposing the ridiculous compositions of our high school pupils, and when there is abundant evidence that many professors of English in our colleges can not do much better for their students, one is reminded of the homely adage, If you would have anything done right, do it yourself. The student who has listened to learned lectures on the age and in uence of Chaucer, or has been required to produce a thesis on the Lake poets, with out being taught the fundamental principles in the use of his native tongue, may well say, Give me the means of teaching myself. I know of no volume that will answer his requirement so completely and satisfactorily as this. Here he is so far instructed in the proper use of words and phrases, with caution as to those that should be avoided, that after closing the book he will delightedly continue the study in his leisure moments. Here, also, he is taught how to use books of reference. Comparatively few read ers have the knack of readily uncovering the riches of information that are embodied in such books. Certain it is that his eyes had seldom wandered from the face of the young girl from the moment of her entrance; and a charming youthful face it was, with its small undefined nose, lustrous black eyes, well-formed mouth, and high intellectual forehead partially covered by braids of raven hair. But it was the smile that had most of all attracted, for it was the brightest he had ever seen, and the more remarkable as the general expression of the countenance was pensive.
