Book Expressions of an Acorn

Download or read book Expressions of an Acorn written by Curt Nail and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I love my homeland, America. The United States of America has been the greatest nation in human history. Yet today, we are living in an era where change is coming, both swift and severe. This change is rapidly divorcing our past from our future. We are not what we were. This book contains ideas that could potentially once again make tomorrow better than yesterday. I have been told by a number of people to stop speaking out, because it will make no difference. I am just a voice screaming into the night. Yet I find a voice hidden by darkness preferable to the deafening silence of submission. Ideas presented here on government, church and state, healthcare, education, family, and immigration may yet revive the hopeful hearts of those who need it. Its time to dream again. Come. Let us dream together.

Book Representation and Processing of Spatial Expressions

Download or read book Representation and Processing of Spatial Expressions written by Patrick Olivier and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coping with spatial expressions in a plausible manner is a crucial problem in a number of research fields, specifically cognitive science, artificial intelligence, psychology, and linguistics. This volume contains a set of theoretical analyses as well as accounts of applications which deal with the problems of representing and processing spatial expressions. These include dialogue understanding using mental images; interfaces to CAD and multi-media systems, such as natural language querying of photographic databases; speech-driven design and assembly; machine translation systems; spatial queries for Geographic Information Systems; and systems which generate spatial descriptions on the basis of maps, cognitive maps, or other spatial representations, such as intelligent vehicle navigation systems. Though there have been many different approaches to the representation and processing of spatial expressions, most existing computational characterizations have so far been restricted to particularly narrow problem domains, usually specific spatial contexts determined by overall system goals. To date, artificial intelligence research in this field has rarely taken advantage of language and spatial cognition studies carried out by the cognitive science community. One of the fundamental aims of this book is to bring together research from both disciplines in the belief that artificial intelligence has much to gain from an appreciation of cognitive theories.

Download or read book Organizing Urban America written by Heidi J. Swarts and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collective action through organized social movements has long expanded American citizens’ rights and liberties. Recently, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) has helped win living wage initiatives in more than 130 cities across the country. Likewise, congregation-based groups have established countless health, education, and other social programs at city and state levels. Despite modest budgets, these organizations—different in their approach, but at the same time working for social change—have won billions of dollars in redistributive programs. Looking closely at this phenomenon, Heidi J. Swarts explores activist groups’ cultural, organizational, and political strategies. Focusing on ACORN chapters and church federations in St. Louis, Missouri, and San Jose, California, Swarts demonstrates that congregation-based organizing has developed an innovative cultural strategy, combining democratic deliberation and leadership development to produce a “culture of commitment” among its cross-class, multiracial membership. By contrast, ACORN’s more homogeneous low-income class base has a national structure that allows it to coordinate campaigns quickly, and its seasoned staff excels in tactical innovations. By making these often-invisible grassroots organizers evident, Swarts sheds light on factors that constrain or enable other social movements in the United States. Heidi J. Swarts is assistant professor of political science at Rutgers University.

Book One Acorn s Journey

Download or read book One Acorn s Journey written by Rhonda S. Edwards and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent winds from an approaching tropical storm snatch an acorn from the safety of an oak tree and deposit it on the shore during the night. The acorn risks being washed away into the ocean or being eaten by a seagull before it’s rescued by Hatokwassi, a Kiawah Indian. She tucks the acorn safely away in her pouch, carries it back to her village, and lovingly plants it in her garden. Hatokwassi imagines it as a gift for her village, praying for the branches to shade the garden, the boughs to provide a playground for the children, and the seeds to offer food for the squirrels. A picture book for children, One Acorn’s Journey narrates the story of the Angel Oak, the oldest living oak tree in the United States located in Charleston, South Carolina.

But working in the big leagues also means dealing with heartbreaking cases, and this one is no exception. Someone is killing children, and the Canton Police Department feels keenly the loss of one of its own when the daughter of Quynlin’s partner, Buster, is one of the victims. The case leads to Buster’s retirement and voluntary commitment to a mental health center—the same one where Quynlin’s own sister lives—when he can’t get the answers he seeks. In working to solve the case, Quynlin must also battle his own demons, including a serious heroin addiction and thoughts of suicide. And he has a daughter of his own who could fall prey to the Candy Man Killer. Clairvoyant visions from his sister, Amy Sue, give Quynlin and his partner some clues into the case, but can they solve it before the killer strikes again? Lay Them Down to Sleep takes readers on a twisting, turning ride of suspense as they follow the detective with raw edges and his determination to do whatever it takes to solve the case.
