Book Expression in the Performing Arts

Download or read book Expression in the Performing Arts written by Inma Álvarez and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performing arts represent a significant part of the artistic production in our culture. Correspondingly the fields of drama, film, music, opera, dance and performance studies are expanding. However, these arts remain an underexplored territory for aesthetics and the philosophy of art. Expression in the Performing Arts tries to contribute to this area. The volume collects essays written by international scholars who address a variety of themes concerning the core philosophical topic of expression in the theory of the performing arts. Specific questions about the ontology of art, the nature of the performances, the role of the performer, and the relations between spectators and works emerge from the study of the performing arts. Besides, these arts challenge the unchanging physicality of other kinds of works of art, usually the direct result of creative individual artist, and barely affected by the particular circumstances of their exhibition. Expression is one of the issues that adopt a special character in the performing arts. Do singers, dancers or actors express the feelings a work is expressive of? How does the performer contribute to the expressive content of the work? How does the spectator emotionally respond to the physical proximity of the performers? Is aesthetic distance avoided in the understanding of the performing arts? How are the expressive properties of work, performance and characters related? And how are the subjectivities they embody revealed? The contributions presented here are not all in agreement on the right answers to theses questions, but they offer a critical and exciting discussion of them. In addition to original proposals on the theoretical aspect of expression in the performing arts, the collection includes analyses of individual artists, historical productions and concrete works of art, as well as reflections on performative practice.

At their best, the performing arts represent the height of human creativity and expression. But the presentation on stage, whether it is Shakespeare, Beethoven, or The Lion King, depends on a business backstage. This book provides an overview of both the product on stage and the industry that makes it possible. While the industry’s product is unique—with unique supply and demand characteristics—it is still an industry, with supply inputs, organization structures, competitors, business models, value chains, and customers. We will examine each of the major segments (Broadway, regional theater, orchestra, opera, and ballet) along these business dimensions. This book will give lovers of the performing arts an understanding of the business realities that make live performances possible. Managers, board members, and performers will be better equipped to take on the strategic challenges their companies face. People contemplating any of these roles will have a better idea of what to expect. Business analysts and students of strategy will discover how economic frameworks apply in this unique setting where culture and commerce converge.

Book Performing Arts and Therapeutic Implications

Download or read book Performing Arts and Therapeutic Implications written by Tanvi Bajaj and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting an alternative perspective, this book proposes that performing arts forge an emotional bond between the performer and the audience, making the act of performance a therapeutic and restorative experience, and not merely recreational. Studying the life-experiences of six artists, and their unique engagement with three art forms — music, drama and dance — the book highlights the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual effects of performing arts both on the performers and the audience. More importantly, it takes the current understanding of the therapeutic role of arts beyond a deficit model of health that focuses on their use in curing illnesses, disabilities and imbalances, towards a more positive growth-centric model that relates them to promoting holistic mental health, well-being and happiness. It thus bridges the gap between the theoretical understanding of creative arts therapy and the practical experience of performing arts in non-therapeutic settings. Further, it assumes increasing relevance with respect to fast-changing lifestyles to which stress and ill-health are often attributed. The book will appeal to artists, educators and researchers of performing arts, applied psychology, counselling and therapy, and cultural studies, as well as interested general readers.

Download or read book Performing Hearts written by Suzanne M. McGill and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Abstract] This thesis explores the person's experience of personal growth through theatre. The focus is on how individuals perceive themselves while involved in the performing arts and how this medium is used as an expression of self. A heuristic research model, which fully integrates the researcher's experience into the study, was used in this investigation. Significant heuristic concepts used in collecting data included: immersion, incubation, indwelling, and illumination. An extensive review of pertinent literature is focused on six areas of the performing arts: the artist as a person, the musician, creative dramatics for children, drama in education, the dancer, and the actor/actress. Data was collected from nine co-researchers and my own experience as a children's theatre director. Methods and procedures for collecting data included open-ended, tape recorded interviews, poetry and guided imagery. The taped interviews were transcribed and six major themes were revealed: expression of self as an artist, the work, struggle and challenge, gift giving, family unity, enhancement of personal character, and the "Beyond". In these themes many qualities of self-understanding began to crystallize. An awareness of one's self in the world as an individual and as an intricate part of the whole began to surface. The feelings of acceptance, goodness, accomplishment, freedom, and love were all associated with the person's experience in the performing arts. The study points to the importance of performing arts to enhance self-asareness and growth in psychotherapy, educational settings, theatre, and societal attitudes and values. Suggestions for further research in these areas are offered to help facilitate the use of performing arts outside the theatre.

Book Arts and Culture in Global Development Practice

Download or read book Arts and Culture in Global Development Practice written by Cindy Maguire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role that arts and culture can play in supporting global international development. The book argues that arts and culture are fundamental to human development and can bring considerable positive results for helping to empower communities and provide new ways of looking at social transformation. Whilst most literature addresses culture in abstract terms, this book focuses on practice-based, collective, community-focused, sustainability-minded, and capacity-building examples of arts and development. The book draws on case studies from around the world, investigating the different ways practitioners are imagining or defining the role of arts and culture in Belize, Canada, China, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Kosovo, Malawi, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, the USA, and Western Sahara refugee camps in Algeria. The book highlights the importance of situated practice, asking what questions or concerns practitioners have and inviting a dialogic sharing of resources and possibilities across different contexts. Seeking to highlight practices and conversations outside normative frameworks of understanding, this book will be a breath of fresh air to practitioners, policy makers, students, and researchers from across the fields of global development, social work, art therapy, and visual and performing arts education.

Book Performing Arts in Changing Societies

Download or read book Performing Arts in Changing Societies written by Randi Margrete Selvik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing Arts in Changing Societies is a detailed exploration of genre development within the fields of dance, theatre, and opera in selected European countries during the decades before and after 1800. An introductory chapter outlines the theoretical and ideological background of genre thinking in Europe, starting from antiquity. A further fourteen chapters cover the performing genres as they developed in England, France, Germany, and Austria, and follow the dissemination and adaptation of the corresponding genres in minor and major cities in the Nordic countries. With a strong emphasis on the role that pragmatic and contextual factors had in defining genres, the book examines such subjects as the dancing masters in Christiania (Oslo), circa 1800, the repertory and travels of an itinerant acrobat and his wife in Norway in the 1760s, and the influence of Enlightenment ideas on bourgeois drama in Denmark. Including detailed analyses in the light of material, political, and social factors, this is a valuable resource for scholars and researchers in the fields of musicology, opera studies, and theatre and performance studies.
