Book The Norwegian North Polar Expedition 1893 96 Scientific Results

Download or read book The Norwegian North Polar Expedition 1893 96 Scientific Results written by Fridtjof Nansen and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1971-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Norwegian North Polar Expedition, 1893-1896, Vol. 6: Scientific Results The history of our expedition is in several respects intimately connected with the name of my good friend, Prof. H. Mohn. As stated in the Introduction to my popular account of the Expedition("Farthest North") it was after reading a newspaper article by Prof. Mohn (in1884) on the Jeanette relics that I got the first suggestion towards the planning of the expedition. Mohn was one of the few who always believed in the practicability of this plan. He was one of the last friends to bid us farewell when we left Vardo in 1893, and by a strange coincidence he was also the first friend Johansen and I met, when three years later we again went ashore, also at Vardo. This important volume is entirely Mohn's work, and in now laying it before the scientific world I feel I could find no better opportunity of according him my special and cordial thanks for the valuable assistance he rendered the expedition in this and in other ways. At my request Professor H. Mohn kindly took charge of the meteorological equipment of the expedition from the very beginning. In concert with me, he laid the plan of the meteorological work to be carried out during the voyage; he ordered the instruments and tested them, and he gave Capt. Scott-Hansen the necessary instructions for making the observations, and pointed out how the whole meteorological work should be superintended. Book Farthest North

Download or read book Farthest North written by Fridjtof Nansen and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2000-05-12 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1893 Nansen set sail in the Fram, a ship specially designed and built to be frozen into the polar ice cap, withstand its crushing pressures, and travel with the sea's drift closer to the North Pole than anyone had ever gone before. Experts said such a ship couldn't be built and that the voyage was tantamount to suicide. This brilliant first-person account, originally published in 1897, marks the beginning of the modern age of exploration. Nansen vividly describes the dangerous voyage and his 15-month-long dash to the North Pole by sledge. An unforgettable tale and a must-read for any armchair explorer.

Book The Return of the South Pole Sled Dogs

Download or read book The Return of the South Pole Sled Dogs written by Mary R. Tahan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the return of the surviving sled dogs of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1912 from Antarctica, where they had helped Roald Amundsen become the first human to reach the South Pole. This book is the sequel to the highly acclaimed Roald Amundsen’s Sled Dogs: The Sledge Dogs Who Helped Discover the South Pole. It chronicles how the sled dogs were used internationally to further promote the expedition’s great achievement and follows some of the dogs as they undertake subsequent expeditions – with Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911–1914, which made scientific discoveries, and with Arve Staxrud’s Norwegian Arctic Rescue Mission of 1913, which saved members of the Herbert Schröder-Stranz German Arctic Expedition. The book tracks the remaining 39 sled dogs to their next challenging adventures and their final destinations in Argentina, Norway, Antarctica, and Australia. Like its predecessor, the book portrays how Amundsen continued to utilize the Polar dogs – both in their lives and in their deaths – to propel his career and solidify his expedition's image.

Book Architectural Conservation and Restoration in Norway and Russia

Download or read book Architectural Conservation and Restoration in Norway and Russia written by Evgeny Khodakovsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norway and Russia have been closely related through the ages, both geographically and historically, and have experienced similar problems relating to climate, building maintenance and national wooden architecture. As a result, the parallel study of architectural conservation and restoration theories and practices in both neighbouring Northern states makes for a stimulating collective monograph. Architectural Conservation and Restoration in Norway and Russia delves into the main challenges of historic and contemporary architectural preservation practices in the two countries. The book consists of three main parts: the discovery and preservation of historical architecture in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century; contemporary approaches to former restorations and the conservation and maintenance of historical architecture; and, finally, current questions concerning preservation of twentieth-century architectural heritage which, due to different building technologies and artistic qualities, demand revised methods and historical evaluation. This is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and students in different areas of architecture (medieval, nineteenth-century, wooden and contemporary architecture) as well as in the fields of art, architectural history, cultural heritage and Scandinavian and Russian studies.
