Book excerpt: Fish accomplish most of their basic behaviors by swimming. Swimming is fundamental in a vast majority of fish species for avoiding predation, feeding, finding food, mating, migrating and finding optimal physical environments. Fish exhibit a wide variety of swimming patterns and behaviors. This treatise looks at fish swimming from the behavioral and

Book Global Warming

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. M. Wood
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1997-05-13
  • ISBN : 0521495326
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Global Warming written by C. M. Wood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-05-13 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming and climate change are growing environmental concerns which are much in the scientific, governmental and public eye. The potential impact on freshwater and marine fishes is immense, because most fish have no physiological ability to regulate their body temperature. This volume focuses on the effects of temperature at all levels of organization in fish, with particular emphasis on physiological function: cells, epithelia, organ systems, the whole organism, reproduction, behaviour, pollutant interactions, ecology and population dynamics, with each chapter written by experts in the field. Many chapters also speculate on the long-term physiological and ecological implications to fish of a 2-4°C global warming scenario. Researchers and graduate students in the areas of animal physiology and behaviour, environmental toxicology, population ecology and fisheries biology and management will find this volume of particular interest.

Book Handbook of Ecotoxicology

Download or read book Handbook of Ecotoxicology written by David J. Hoffman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-11-13 with total page 1316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated with 18 new chapters, this second edition includes contributions from over 75 international experts. Also, a Technical Review Board reviewed all manuscripts for accuracy and currency. Focusing on toxic substance and how they affect the ecosystems worldwide, the book presents methods for quantifying and measuring ecotoxicological effects in the field and in the lab, as well as methods for estimating, predicting, and modeling in ecotoxicology studies. This is the definitive reference for students, researchers, consultants, and other professionals in the environmental sciences, toxicology, chemistry, biology, and ecology - in academia, industry, and government.

Book Acid Toxicity and Aquatic Animals

Download or read book Acid Toxicity and Aquatic Animals written by R. Morris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-03-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews and presents recent research on acid waters and their effects on aquatic animals. Starting with the environment, in order to assess why the problems have arisen in particular areas, the volume then deals with field and survival studies on invertebrates and vertebrates; examines the extent of the biological problem and the attempts that have been made to relate water quality and the susceptibility of animals. The natural progression of environmental and field studies, toxicity, and survival tests provide the background information for the physiological studies that follow. These form the major component of the book and they seek to analyze the toxic effects of acid waters and trace metals with cardiovascular and endocrinological effects.

Book Metal Poisoning in Fish

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elsa M. B. Sorensen
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 1991-05-03
  • ISBN : 9780849342684

Download or read book Metal Poisoning in Fish written by Elsa M. B. Sorensen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-05-03 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Poisoning in Fish provides a comprehensive look at many aspects of metal poisoning of euryhaline and stenohaline fish. Metals and metalloids are considered individually and collectively and include arsenic, lead, selenium, copper, cadmium, mercury, and zinc. This informative, readable volume is designed to help regulatory personnel, enforcement personnel, and scientists understand the impact of these elements on fish. Topics covered include mechanisms of action, toxicity, biological effects, accumulation, tissue distribution, concentration factors, maximum acceptable toxicant concentrations, application factors, biological half-lives, uptake kinetics, depuration kinetics, elemental speciation, and detoxification mechanisms. The book emphasizes the use of data gathered from a variety of sources to pinpoint specific elemental agents as causal factors in the morbidity and mortality of fish.

Book Fish Energetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Tytler
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401179182
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Fish Energetics written by Peter Tytler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is almost thirty years since Professor G. G. Winberg established the basis for experimental studies in fish energetics with the publication of his monograph, Rate of Metabolism and Food Requirements of Fishes. His ultimate aim was to develop a scientific approach to fish culture and management, and the immense volume of literature generated in the ensuing years has been mainly in response to the demand for information from a rapidly expanding, world-wide aquaculture industry and to the shortcomings of contemporary practices in fisheries management. The purpose of this book is not to review this literature compre hensively, but, assuming an informed readership, to focus attention on topics in which new knowledge and theory are beginning to be applied in practice. Most emphasis has been placed on food; feeding; production (growth and reproduction) and energy budgeting, as these have most influence on the development of fish culture. Some chapters offer practical advice for the selection of methods, and warn of pitfalls in previous approaches. In others the influence of new theory on the interpretation of studies in fish energetics is discussed in the context of resource allocation and adaptation. We hope that the scope of material presented here will have sufficient interest and value to help significantly to fulfil Winberg's original objectives.
