Book excerpt: This substantial volume includes more than fifty never-before-published expository sermons on John 4 from one of the twentieth century's greatest preachers. It was just a conversation between two people by the side of a well in Samaria. One, a local woman, came to perform her daily task of drawing water. Another, a Jewish man tired from traveling, sat down for a drink. But he wasn't just any Jewish man, and this wasn't just any conversation. The man, Jesus, revealed himself as the Messiah, leading to the conversion of not only the Samaritan woman but many from her town. Now, for the first time, fifty-six sermons by Martyn Lloyd-Jones on this passage of Scripture are available in Living Water. Lloyd-Jones, known for his ability to clearly communicate profound theological concepts, digs into this familiar passage from the fourth chapter of the Gospel of John, exposing fresh layers of truth. His perceptive analysis is helpful for all who thirst for the living water that only Jesus can provide.

Praise for The Jesus I Never Knew: "This is the best book about Jesus I have ever read, probably the best book about Jesus in the whole century. Yancey gently took away my blinders and blazed the trail through my own doubting fears, pious know-it-all, and critical balderdash until I saw the Savior anew and thought I heard him ask me, 'Now whom do you say that I am?' and I understood the question as I never had before." --Lewis B. Smedes, Senior Professor, Fuller Seminary "Philip Yancey takes the reader with him on his very personal journey to Jesus. In The Jesus I Never Knew, I became convinced that the Jesus I met--in some ways for the first time--has known me all along. This book is destined to become a favorite--to recommend to those still seeking Jesus and to pass along to those who've met him, but long to know him more." --Elisa Morgan, President Emerita, MOPS International

Book That You May Believe

  • Author : James Goforth

Download or read book That You May Believe written by James Goforth and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." John wrote his gospel to give the world something in which to believe. In John 20:30, he says "Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book." He further explains in 21:25 that he estimates that if everything Jesus did were recorded that all the books in all the libraries in the world couldn't hold what would be written. So, why did John include these things in these 21 chapters? The key is the word he uses "signs". John picked events, actions, miraculous and mundane, things that together would show us, give us a sign, a token, a revelation, in which we can place the full weight of our trust, the word we use is faith. And faith in Jesus, results in salvation and reconciliation with God. To all who receive him, he gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in his name, John 1:12. So, how are we going to make that shift in faith, under the power and prompting of the Holy Spirit? John 20:31 these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.My sermons in John's gospel are collected in three volumes. "Written in Flesh" introduces the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us and by his very presence called us to understand that God had come to make us new and make us right, chapters 1-3. Beginning in chapter 4 continuing through chapter 12, we see his public ministry, "That You May Believe". Then finally, beginning in chapter 13 through the end, we have book 3 as Jesus is crucified, resurrected, and commissions us, "That You May Have Life". I pray that these books will inspire you to know the Person, Potential, and the Purpose of the Son of God, the force behind all of life, come among us, to bring us to God.

Download or read book Preaching written by John F. MacArthur and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2005-08-21 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many sermons preached today lack the divine knowledge and spiritual understanding available only through dynamic expository preaching. In Preaching: How to Preach Biblically, John MacArthur’' well-known passion for the Bible combines with the expertise of faculty members at The Master's Seminary to inspire and equip preachers in effective biblical preaching. Preaching: How to Preach Biblically flows from biblical foundations for expository preaching through a detailed process of developing expositions and creating sermons to the actual delivery of expository messages, connecting what pastors learn in seminary with the sermons preached in a local church. This volume shows how to progress purposefully from one phase to the next in preparing to minister to God's people through preaching. This book answers these questions and more: What is expository, biblical preaching? What are the theological and historical foundations for insisting on expository preaching? What are the steps involved in preparation for and participation in biblical preaching? What models exist for expository preaching today? The Master's Seminary faculty, with over thirty years' experience in preaching and seminary training of preachers, contributes a treasury of expertise alongside insights from expositor John MacArthur. While united on their commitment to exposition, the variety of individual expressions and methodological preferences discussed offers beneficial assistance for any preacher seeking a higher level of expository excellence.

Download or read book Twelve Ordinary Men written by John F. MacArthur and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2006-05-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don't have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples, whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Join bestselling author John MacArthur in Twelve Ordinary Men as he draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original disciples for today's modern disciple, you! Jesus chose ordinary men--fishermen, tax collectors, political zealots--and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from people who were otherwise unremarkable. The twelve disciples weren't the stained-glass saints we imagine. On the contrary, they were truly human, all too prone to mistakes, misstatements, wrong attitudes, lapses of faith, and bitter failure. Simply put, they were flawed people, just like us. But under Jesus' teaching and touch, they became a force that forever changed the world. MacArthur takes you into the inner circle of the disciples--their selection, their training, their personalities, and their incredible impact. As MacArthur took a closer look at the lives of the twelve disciples, he found himself asking difficult questions along the way, including: Why did Jesus pick each of the twelve disciples? How did Jesus teach them everything he could in just eighteen short months? Can the lessons that Jesus taught the disciples can still influence our faith today? In Twelve Ordinary Men, you'll learn that disciples are living proof that God's strength is made perfect in weakness. As you get to know the men who walked with Jesus, you'll see that if he can accomplish his purposes through them, he can do the same through you.

Book The Gospel According to John

Download or read book The Gospel According to John written by D. A. Carson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary seeks above all to explain the text of John's Gospel to those whose privilege and responsibility it is to minister the Word of God to others, to preach and to lead Bible studies. I have tried to include the kind of information they need to know, but to do so in such a way that the informed layperson could also use the work in personal study of the Bible, exclusively for purposes of personal growth in edification and understanding. In particular, I have attempted: (1) To make clear the flow of the text. (2) To engage a small but representative part of the massive secondary literature on John. (3) To draw a few lines towards establishing how the Fourth Gospel contributes to biblical and systematic theology. (4) To offer a consistent exposition of John's Gospel as an evangelistic Gospel. - Preface.
