Book Women in International and Universal Exhibitions 1876 1937

Download or read book Women in International and Universal Exhibitions 1876 1937 written by Rebecca Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for the importance of bringing women and gender more directly into the dynamic field of exposition studies. Reclaiming women for the history of world fairs (1876-1937), it also seeks to introduce new voices into these studies, dialoguing across disciplinary and national historiographies. From the outset, women participated not only as spectators, but also as artists, writers, educators, artisans and workers, without figuring among the organizers of international exhibitions until the 20th century. Their presence became more pointedly acknowledged as feminist movements developed within the Western World and specific spaces dedicated to women’s achievements emerged. International exhibitions emerged as showcases of "modernity" and "progress," but also as windows onto the foreign, the different, the unexpected and the spectacular. As public rituals of celebration, they transposed national ceremonies and protests onto an international stage. For spectators, exhibitions brought the world home; for organizers, the entire world was a fair. Women were actors and writers of the fair narrative, although acknowledgment of their contribution was uneven and often ephemeral. Uncovering such silence highlights how gendered the triumphant history of modernity was, and reveals the ways women as a category engaged with modern life within that quintessential modern space—the world fair.

Book The Intellectual Property of Food and Hospitality From Sybaris Banquets to NASA s Deep Space Food Challenge

Download or read book The Intellectual Property of Food and Hospitality From Sybaris Banquets to NASA s Deep Space Food Challenge written by Nuno Pires de Carvalho and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuno Pires de Carvalho, widely honored for his incomparable research in the origins and development of intellectual property, has devoted a considerable portion of his writing to the role this field of law plays in specific areas of human endeavor, including medicine and fashion. In this book, he brings his meticulous scholarship to bear on how society has constructed intellectual property so as to adapt it to the needs of the industries of food and hospitality and how entrepreneurs have extracted from intellectual property the most appropriate means for capturing knowledge and reputation in these two fields of business. Presenting a comprehensive collection of more than two hundred documentary sources illustrating this evolution since antiquity ¬– with notes explaining the context and relevance of each source – the book delineates the enchainment of important moments in the development of intellectual property in the context of food and hospitality. Along the way, the book details the particular development of such specific aspects as the following: rules against unfair competition among food producers and preparers; patents for culinary recipes, foodstuffs, and hospitality services; exclusions from patentability; marking of goods and containers; inventions of devices and processes in food preparation; identifiers in such industries as cutlery, baking, winemaking, cheesemaking, and brewing; emergence of intellectual property for plant varieties; database protection for organized compilations of recipes. To illustrate some of the peculiarities of intellectual property as applied to food and hospitality, the book includes numerous pictures of patent and copyright claim documents, trademarks, advertisements, labels, culinary book covers, and food preparation devices. Because of the multiple nature of the human activities behind it, food calls for every variant of intellectual property. Thus, this matchless volume will be of great interest to all concerned with any branch of intellectual property law, including practitioners, academics, magistrates, government officials, and even the legal community as a whole. The book will reveal not only the ways intellectual property evolves and adapts to social changes but also how intellectual property law accommodates the needs and aspirations of entrepreneurs in the fields of food and hospitality.

Download or read book Vital Minimum written by Dana Simmons and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What constitutes a need? Who gets to decide what people do or do not need? In modern France, scientists, both amateur and professional, were engaged in defining and measuring human needs. These scientists did not trust in a providential economy to distribute the fruits of labor and uphold the social order. Rather, they believed that social organization should be actively directed according to scientific principles. They grounded their study of human needs on quantifiable foundations: agricultural and physiological experiments, demographic studies, and statistics. The result was the concept of the "vital minimum"--the living wage, a measure of physical and social needs. In this book, Dana Simmons traces the history of this concept, revealing the intersections between technologies of measurement, such as calorimeters and social surveys, and technologies of wages and welfare, such as minimum wages, poor aid, and welfare programs. In looking at how we define and measure need, Vital Minimum raises profound questions about the authority of nature and the nature of inequality.

Book excerpt: Louis XIV, regency, rococo, neoclassical, empire, art nouveau, and historicist pastiche: furniture styles march across French history as regimes rise and fall. In this extraordinary social history, Leora Auslander explores the changing meaning of furniture from the mid-seventeenth to the early twentieth century, revealing how the aesthetics of everyday life were as integral to political events as to economic and social transformations. Enriched by Auslander's experience as a cabinetmaker, this work demonstrates how furniture served to represent and even generate its makers' and consumers' identities.
