Book Reframing Japonisme

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Emery
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2020-09-17
  • ISBN : 1501344668
  • Pages : 454 pages

Download or read book Reframing Japonisme written by Elizabeth Emery and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japonisme, the nineteenth-century fascination for Japanese art, has generated an enormous body of scholarship since the beginning of the twenty-first century, but most of it neglects the women who acquired objects from the Far East and sold them to clients or displayed them in their homes before bequeathing them to museums. The stories of women shopkeepers, collectors, and artists rarely appear in memoirs left by those associated with the japoniste movement. This volume brings to light the culturally important, yet largely forgotten activities of women such as Clémence d'Ennery (1823–1898), who began collecting Japanese and Chinese chimeras in the 1840s, built and decorated a house for them in the 1870s, and bequeathed the “Musée d'Ennery” to the state as a free public museum in 1893. A friend of the Goncourt brothers and a fifty-year patron of Parisian dealers of Asian art, d'Ennery's struggles to gain recognition as a collector and curator serve as a lens through which to examine the collecting and display practices of other women of her day. Travelers to Japan such as the Duchesse de Persigny, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and Laure Durand- Fardel returned with souvenirs that they shared with friends and family. Salon hostesses including Juliette Adam, Louise Cahen d'Anvers, Princesse Mathilde, and Marguerite Charpentier provided venues for the discussion and examination of Japanese art objects, as did well-known art dealers Madame Desoye, Madame Malinet, Madame Hatty, and Madame Langweil. Writers, actresses, and artists-Judith Gautier, Thérèse Bentzon, Sarah Bernhardt, and Mary Cassatt, to name just a few- took inspiration from the Japanese material in circulation to create their own unique works of art. Largely absent from the history of Japonisme, these women-and many others-actively collected Japanese art, interacted with auction houses and art dealers, and formed collections now at the heart of museums such as the Louvre, the Musée Guimet, the Musée Cernuschi, the Musée Unterlinden, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Book W E B DuBois s Exhibit of American Negroes

Download or read book W E B DuBois s Exhibit of American Negroes written by Eugene F Provenzo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important snapshot of life for black Americans at the beginning of the twentieth century” from the editor of The Illustrated Souls of Black Folk (Booklist). “The problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line.” This quote is among the most prophetic in American history. It was written by W. E. B. DuBois for the Exhibition of American Negroes displayed at the 1900 Paris Exposition. They are words whose force echoed throughout the Twentieth Century. W. E. B. DuBois put together a groundbreaking exhibit about African Americans for the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. For the first time, this book takes readers through the exhibit. With more than 200 black-and-white images throughout, this book explores the diverse lives of African Americans at the turn of the century, from challenges to accomplishments. DuBois confronted stereotypes in many ways in the exhibit, and he provided irrefutable evidence of how African Americans had been systematically discriminated against. Though it was only on display for a few brief months, the award-winning Exhibit of American Negroes represents the great lost archive of African American culture from the beginning of the twentieth century. “Those concerned with African American history will benefit from this work and may wish to also consult Provenzo’s The Illustrated Souls of Black Folk (2004) for a companion read. Summing Up: Recommended.” —Choice Reviews “Ten years before he founded the NAACP, W. E. B. DuBois used his role in the Exhibition to begin the long, fruitful process of achieving equality.” —Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP

Download or read book The Rise of Heritage written by Astrid Swenson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where does our fascination for 'heritage' originate? This groundbreaking comparative study of preservation in France, Germany and England looks beyond national borders to reveal how the idea of heritage emerged from intense competition and collaboration in a global context. Astrid Swenson follows the 'heritage-makers' from the French Revolution to the First World War, revealing the importance of global networks driving developments in each country. Drawing on documentary, literary and visual sources, the book connects high politics and daily life and uncovers how, through travel, correspondence, world fairs and international congresses, the preservationists exchanged ideas, helped each other campaign and dreamed of establishing international institutions for the protection of heritage. Yet, these heritage-makers were also animated by fierce rivalry as international tension grew. This mixture of international collaboration and competition created the European culture of heritage, which defined preservation as integral to modernity, and still shapes current institutions and debates.

Book The Education of Henry Adams

Download or read book The Education of Henry Adams written by Henry Adams and published by Strelbytskyy Multimedia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education of Henry Adams is an autobiography that records the struggle of Bostonian Henry Adams (1838–1918), in his later years, to come to terms with the dawning 20th century, so different from the world of his youth. It is also a sharp critique of 19th-century educational theory and practice. In 1907, Adams began privately circulating copies of a limited edition printed at his own expense. Commercial publication of the book had to await its author's 1918 death, whereupon it won the 1919 Pulitzer Prize. The Modern Library placed it first in a list of the top 100 English-language nonfiction books of the 20th century.
