Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradoxia Epidemica is a broad-ranging critical study of Renaissance thought, showing how the greatest writers of the period from Erasmus and Rabelais to Donne, Milton, and Shakespeare made conscious use of paradox not only as a figure of speech but as a mode of thought, a way of perceiving the universe, God, nature, and man himself. The book consists of an introduction (historical and topological) and sixteen chapters grouped according to broad types of paradox: rhetorical, theological, ontological, epistemological. Within this framework the author interprets individual writings or art forms as parts of a rich tradition. Originally published in 1966. Book excerpt: In The Four Last Things, More prescribes frequent meditation on Death, Judgment, Pain and Joy in order to combat the spiritual diseases of pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy and sloth. The Supplication of Souls is More's vigorous, humorous, and artful defense of one of the flashpoints of the Reformation: the Catholic dogma of Purgatory. It is his devastating response to a defamatory political tract that claimed that the greed and corruption of English clergymen stemmed from their insistence on being paid to pray for the dead.

Download or read book Paris Universal Exhibition 1855 written by Great Britain Imperial Commission and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris Universal Exhibition, 1855: Catalogue of the Works Exhibited in the British Section of the Exhibition, in French and English; Together With Exhibitors' Prospectuses, Prices Current, &C Barons the British Goods were sent to Paris, a Catalogue of the proposed Exhibitors' Names was published, which was arranged according to the system of Classification adopted by the Imperial Commission, and a Rotation Number was given to every Exhibitor. This was found of great service in the transport, receipt, and arrangement of the Goods. The French authorities, however, according to their own views, have preferred to re arrange this Catalogue, change the classification of the Exhibitors, placing them alphabetically in Sections, and assign different Numbers. As it would have been inconvenient to have had the French International Catalogue in one form, and a. British edition in another, the latter has been changed to agree with the French version, except in those cases where Exhibitors' names have been removed in consequence of resignation. The French numbering has been adopted, and the original Rotation Numbers have been placed at the end of the British entries. Consequently, if any British Exhibitors find their goods unexpectedly in some new places, as for instance, in Class 2, they will bear in' mind that the responsibility rests wholly with the French authorities, and that the British authorities have simply followed their arrangements. The greater detail which is to be found in some of the French entries arises from additional information furnished direct by Exhibitors to the Imperial Commission.
