Book Exposition of the Gospel of John

Download or read book Exposition of the Gospel of John written by Arthur W. Pink and published by . This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is our purpose to give a verse by verse exposition of the fourth Gospel in the course of this series of studies, but before turning to the opening verses of chapter I it will be necessary to consider John's Gospel as a whole, with the endeavor of discovering its scope, its central theme, and its relation to the other three Gospels. We shall not waste the reader's time by entering into a discussion as to who wrote this fourth Gospel, as to where John was when he wrote it, nor as to the probable date when it was written. These may be points of academic interest, but they provide no food for the soul, nor do they afford any help to an understanding of this section of the Bible, and these are the two chief things we desire to accomplish. Our aim is to open up the Scriptures in such a way that the reader will be able to enter into the meaning of what God has recorded for our learning in this part of His Holy Word, and to edify those who are members of the Household of Faith." Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Book The Gospel According to John

Download or read book The Gospel According to John written by D. A. Carson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary seeks above all to explain the text of John's Gospel to those whose privilege and responsibility it is to minister the Word of God to others, to preach and to lead Bible studies. I have tried to include the kind of information they need to know, but to do so in such a way that the informed layperson could also use the work in personal study of the Bible, exclusively for purposes of personal growth in edification and understanding. In particular, I have attempted: (1) To make clear the flow of the text. (2) To engage a small but representative part of the massive secondary literature on John. (3) To draw a few lines towards establishing how the Fourth Gospel contributes to biblical and systematic theology. (4) To offer a consistent exposition of John's Gospel as an evangelistic Gospel. - Preface.

Book excerpt: "The commentary fully affirms the divine inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of Scripture as it emphasizes 'that which promotes Christ' in each pericope. Authors are sensitive to the rich treasury of language, imagery, and themes found throughout Scripture, including such dialectics as Law and Gospel, sin and grace, death and new life, folly and wisdom, demon possession and the arrival of the kingdom of God in Christ. Careful attention is given to the original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek. Further light is shed on the text from archaeology, history, and extrabiblical literature. Finally, Scripture's message is applied to the ongoing life of the church in terms of ministry, worship, proclamation of the Word, Baptism, the Lord's Supper, confession of the faith--all in joyful anticipation of the life of the world to come." -- Inside cover

Book Commentary on the Gospel of John

Download or read book Commentary on the Gospel of John written by Theodore of Mopsuestia and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore of Mopsuestia serves as one of the most important exemplars of Antiochene exegesis of his generation. While charges of heterodoxy against Theodore may not be entirely justified, there remains an apparent dualism in his Christology that should be critically viewed in light of the later Chalcedonian formula. With this caution, there still remains much that is valuable for contemporary readers, whether preachers, students or lay people interested in the early church?s understanding of the Gospel of John. Here for the first time is a complete English translation of this valuable work, ably translated by Marco Conti and edited by Joel C. Elowsky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of John is one of the four Gospels in the New Testament, traditionally attributed to the apostle John, the son of Zebedee. It is a unique and profound account of the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, written with a distinct theological purpose. Unlike the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), which focus more on the chronological events of Jesus' life, John emphasizes the spiritual significance and theological implications of Jesus' teachings and miracles. One of the central themes of the Gospel of John is the divinity of Jesus Christ. John presents Jesus as the eternal Word (Logos) who was with God in the beginning and was God (John 1:1). Through a series of "I am" statements, Jesus reveals His divine nature and identity, such as "I am the bread of life" (John 6:35) and "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). These statements affirm Jesus' deity and his unique role in salvation history. Another prominent theme in the Gospel of John is belief and unbelief. John repeatedly emphasizes the importance of believing in Jesus as the Son of God and the source of eternal life (John 3:16). He contrasts this with the unbelief of those who reject Jesus despite witnessing his miracles and hearing his teachings. The Gospel portrays belief in Jesus as the key to receiving salvation and eternal life. John also emphasizes the concept of new birth or spiritual regeneration. In the famous conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus teaches that one must be born again to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:3). This spiritual rebirth is not a physical process but a transformation of the heart and spirit, made possible through faith in Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of John contains several distinctive narratives not found in the other Gospels, including the wedding at Cana (John 2:1-11), the encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1-42), and the raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-44). These stories serve as powerful illustrations of Jesus' identity, mission, and the nature of his kingdom. John also emphasizes the importance of love and service in the Christian life. Jesus' command to love one another as he has loved us (John 13:34) is a central theme in John's Gospel. Jesus' washing of the disciples' feet (John 13:1-17) exemplifies his selfless love and humble service, which believers are called to emulate. The Gospel of John concludes with an emphasis on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. John provides a detailed account of Jesus' crucifixion, burial, and resurrection appearances, highlighting the significance of Jesus' victory over sin and death. The resurrection serves as a confirmation of Jesus' identity as the Son of God and the fulfillment of God's plan of salvation. Overall, the Gospel of John presents a compelling portrait of Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the source of eternal life, and the embodiment of divine love and truth. It challenges readers to believe in Jesus, to be born again spiritually, and to live lives characterized by love, faith, and service.
