Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author praises Gratian’s zeal for instruction in the Faith, and speaks lowly of his own merits. Taught of God Himself, the Emperor stands in no need of human instruction; yet this his devoutness prepares the way to victory. The task appointed to the author is difficult: in the accomplishment whereof he will be guided not so much by reason and argument as by authority, especially that of the Nicene Council.

Book excerpt: Aurelius Ambrosius, better known in English as Saint Ambrose (c. between 337 and 340 - 4 April 397), was a bishop of Milan who became one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century. He was one of the four original doctors of the Church. There is a legend that as an infant, a swarm of bees settled on his face while he lay in his cradle, leaving behind a drop of honey. His father considered this a sign of his future eloquence and honeyed tongue. For this reason, bees and beehives often appear in the saint's symbology. After the early death of his father, Ambrose followed his father's career. He was educated in Rome, studying literature, law, and rhetoric. As bishop of Milan, he immediately adopted an ascetic lifestyle, apportioned his money to the poor, donating all of his land, making only provision for his sister Marcellina (who later became a nun),[2] and committed the care of his family to his brother. Ambrose also wrote a treatise by the name of "The Goodness Of Death". On the eve of setting out for the East, to aid his uncle Valens in repelling a Gothic invasion, Gratian, the Emperor of the West, requested St. Ambrose to write him a treatise in proof of the Divinity of Jesus Christ. Gratian's object in making this request was to secure some sort of preservative against the corrupting influence of Arianism, which at that time (a.d. 378) had gained the upper hand of Orthodoxy in the Eastern provinces of the Empire, owing to its establishment at the Imperial Court. In compliance with Gratian's wish, the Bishop of Milan composed a treatise, which now forms the first two Books of the De Fide. With this work the Emperor was so much pleased that on his return from the East, after the death of Valens at Hadrianople, he wrote to St. Ambrose, begging for a fresh copy of the treatise, and further, for its enlargement by the addition of a discourse on the Divinity of the Holy Spirit. The original treatise was, indeed, enlarged by St. Ambrose in 379, but the additional Books dealt, not with the Divinity of the Holy Spirit, but rather with new objections raised by the Arian teachers, and points which had either been passed over or not fully discussed already. In this way St. Ambrose's Exposition was brought into its present form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chief Corner-Stone: Essays Towards an Exposition of the Christian Faith for to-Day The emphasis in the title of this volume rests upon its last word - to-day. Christ has been from the beginning the corner-stone' in the strue ture of individual Christian Character and in the up-building of the faith and life of the Church. It may be said that the Christian faith needs no new exposition; it may also be said that it needs fresh exposition in every generation. Both statements are true, and they are easily recon ciled by those who believe that a faith which does not change in its essential features needs a continually renewed rendering in terms of the Changing vocabulary and Changing habits of thought that mark every new century and epoch. That some periods of history make great and clamant demands for such restatement, whilst in others comparatively little need of it is felt, is a fact too obvious to require comment. Book A Modern Exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith

Download or read book A Modern Exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith written by Samuel E. Waldron and published by EP BOOKS. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. In this extensive exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith, Sam Waldron shows that this work is a masterly statement of the historic Christian faith. His direct and lucid style will help ministers, students and laymen alike to a clear understanding of the Confession and to see its relevance and application to our modern age. Modern Christianity is awash in a flood of doctrinal relativity. Satan and his forces love the imprecision and ambiguity which are rampant in our day. As C. H. Spurgeon observed, 'The arch-enemy of truth has invited us to level our walls and take away our fenced cities'. This exposition was originally published in 1989 to mark the 300th anniversary of the publication of the Second London Confession, which also became known as the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. Today, reformed Baptists world-wide hold this Confession in high esteem and many churches continue to regard it as their official statement of faith. Included in this publication is a helpful introduction on the legitimacy and use of confessions by Dr R. P. Martin, currently Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington.
