Book Sabotage Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sophie Halart
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2016-03-31
  • ISBN : 0857729136
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Sabotage Art written by Sophie Halart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabotage is the deliberate disruption of a dominant system, be it political, military or economic. Yet in recent decades, sabotage has also become an artistic strategy most notably in Latin America. In Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Argentina, artists are producing radical, unruly or even iconoclastic work that resists state violence, social conformity and the commodification of art. Sabotage Art reveals how contemporary Latin American artists have resorted to sabotage strategies as a means to bridge the gap between aesthetics and politics. The global status of and market for Latin American art is growing rapidly. This book is essential reading for those who want to understand this new, dissident work, as well as its mystification, co-option and commercialisation within current academic historiographies and art-world curatorial initiatives."

Book Curating and the Legacies of Colonialism in Contemporary Iberia

Download or read book Curating and the Legacies of Colonialism in Contemporary Iberia written by Carlos Garrido Castellano and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining postcolonial studies, curating and contemporary art, this book surveys the role played by artistic curatorship and contemporary art museums in the shaping of identities and cultural planning in contemporary Iberia. The book’s main hypothesis is that contemporary art has been pivotal in the construction of contemporary Iberia, a process marked by the attention paid (in heterogeneous, not always satisfactory ways) to the entanglement of the legacies of colonialism and the present-day status of Iberian territories as cosmopolitan societies now integrated in the European Union. We argue that, at least from the 1990s, curating emerged as a key activity for Iberian societies to display and configure an image of themselves as modern and fully integrated in the European cultural landscape. Such an image, however, had to cope with the legacies of colonialism and the profound socioeconomic transformations of these societies. This book is concerned with bringing together, while redefining and expanding, Iberian and curatorial studies.

Book Horizontal Art History and Beyond

Download or read book Horizontal Art History and Beyond written by Agata Jakubowska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the concept of horizontal art history—a proposal of a paradigm shift formulated by the Polish art historian Piotr Piotrowski (1952–2015)—that aims at undermining the hegemony of the discourse of art history created in the Western world. The concept of horizontal art history is one of many ideas on how to conduct nonhierarchical art historical analysis that have been developed in different geopolitical locations since at least the 1970s, parallel to the ongoing process of decolonization. This book is a critical examination of horizontal art history which provokes a discussion on the original concept of horizontal art history and possible methods to extend it. This is an edited volume written by international scholars who acknowledge the importance of the concept, share its basic assumptions and are aware both of its advantages and limitations. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, art historiography and postcolonial studies.

Book Reflections on Critical Museology

Download or read book Reflections on Critical Museology written by J. Pedro Lorente and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-20 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections on Critical Museology: Inside and Outside Museums offers a reflective and reflexive re-assessment of museum studies and the first wide-ranging account of critical museology. Drawing on an extensive range of examples from museums and across the museological literature, which are purposefully representative of very different cultural backgrounds, the book issues a plea for critical thinking in and about museums. The various institutions covered and the plural analytical standpoints offer a broad interdisciplinary approach by intermingling art history, anthropology, sociocultural theories and heritage studies. The result is not claimed as a universal or all-encompassing account but a subjective review produced by J. Pedro Lorente, an art critic and historian who has been writing extensively about ‘critical museology’ in different languages for many years. Lorente offers a fascinating synopsis of his ideas in this extremely valuable short book, looking inside and outside museums, combining practice and theory, whilst also relating both to the work of museum professionals and to a range of publications by academics, including those from other research fields. Reflections on Critical Museology: Inside and Outside Museums will be essential reading for university students and academics working in museum studies and cognate disciplines, such as art history, anthropology and cultural studies.

Book Casa SANAA Spanish Edition

Download or read book Casa SANAA Spanish Edition written by Sam Chermayeff and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanaa’s housing projects, both finished (House A, S House, House in a Plum Grove, Small House and Moriyama House), and unfinished projects (Flower House, Garden & House, Seijo Apartments, Ichikawa Apartments, House in China and Eda Apartments). SANAA's architecture embraces complexities within deceptively simple appearances. It has many elements that are impossible to understand unless actually “experienced”. In contrast with modern architecture, SANAA has many aspects that cannot be revealed in “representative” media such as plans, models, and photographs. The “representations” of their architectural works incorporate ambiguity and chronological elements. This characteristic makes Sanaa one of the most innovative offices in the current architectural panorama.

Download or read book Marc Bijl written by Marc Bijl and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the soul of poetry? Perhaps the most influential answer comes from Aristotle’s Poetics, in which the writer regarded poetry as an instance of mimesis, a kind of representation or simulation. However, despite the significance he gave the term, Aristotle's use of the word mimesis was far from unequivocal, and over the centuries that have followed this inconsistency has stimulated a wealth of interpretations and debate. Tracking Poetics from its birth in rhetorical studies to its reception across the centuries until romanticism, Mats Malm here examines the many different ways scholars—from Averroës to Schlegel—have understood mimesis, looking at how these various interpretations have led to very different definitions of the soul of poetry.

Book The Happy Misfits Los Inadaptados Felices

This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autobiographical novel on the life of the brilliant Belgian inventor Marcel Demeulenare and his wife Simonetta narrates the fabled story, set between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th, of the couple during their years in Spain, turned into happy misfits who travel as jugglers and animal tamers giving entertainment shows in cities throughout the peninsula. Through their delicious dialogues, the reader will be able to learn about and delve into the advanced philosophy of this great woman of the 20th century and the great ideas of the great Flemish engineer, inventor of important technical systems. The real life that Simonetta and Marcel led during their unexpected stay in the Spanish city of Cuenca throughout the 1970s was the inspiration for this novel. The original manuscript, unpublished until the publication of this edition, was donated by Simonetta as a sign of recognition and gratitude to the International Museum of Electrography -today MIDECIANT- of Cuenca, whose officials had invited her to its inauguration in 1990. This edition rescues the original manuscript, incorporates its translation into Spanish and includes the rest of the original documents donated by Simonetta. To which has been added the textual and visual documentation of some of the original documents related to the fascinating life and important inventions by Marcel Demeulenaere. This publication offers not only the pleasure of reading a wonderful novel, full of life lessons and inspiration, but also becomes an invaluable document for future investigations and can shed a light on the history of the technical evolution of the 20th century that has collaborated in the creation of the current digital society.
