Book Utopias in Latin America

Download or read book Utopias in Latin America written by Juan Pro and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America has historically been a fertile ground where utopian projects, movements, and experiments could take root and thrive. Each of the thirteen authors in this collective volume address a particular case or specific aspect of Latin American utopianism from colonial times to the present day. The America that the Spanish and Portuguese discovered became, from the sixteenth century onwards, a space in which it was possible to imagine the widest variety of forms of human coexistence. Utopias in Latin America reconsiders the sense and understanding of utopias in various historical frames: the discovery of indigenous cultures and their natural environments; the foundation of new towns and cities in a vast colonial territory; the experimental communities of nineteenth-century utopian socialists and European exiled intellectuals; and the innovative formulae that attempts to get beyond twentieth-century capitalism.

Book Ordinary Places Extraordinary Events

Download or read book Ordinary Places Extraordinary Events written by Clara Irazábal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clara Irazábal and her contributors explore the urban history of some of Latin America’s great cities through studies of their public spaces and what has taken place there. The avenues and plazas of Mexico City, Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas, Bogotaì, SaÞo Paulo, Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires have been the backdrop for extraordinary, history-making events. While some argue that public spaces are a prerequisite for the expression, representation and reinforcement of democracy, they can equally be used in the pursuit of totalitarianism. Indeed, public spaces, in both the past and present, have been the site for the contestation by ordinary people of various stances on democracy and citizenship. By exploring the use and meaning of public spaces in Latin American cities, this book sheds light on contemporary definitions of citizenship and democracy in the Americas.

Book Religious Encounter and the Making of the Yoruba

Download or read book Religious Encounter and the Making of the Yoruba written by John David Yeadon Peel and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-21 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Peel is by training an anthropologist, but one possessed of an acute historical sensibility. Indeed, this magnificent book achieves a degree of analytical verve rare in either discipline." —History Today "[T]his is scholarship of the highest quality. . . . Peel lifts the Yoruba past to a dimension of comparative seriousness that no one else has managed. . . . The book teems with ideas . . . about big and compelling matters of very wide interest." —T. C. McCaskie In this magisterial book, J. D. Y. Peel contends that it is through their encounter with Christian missions in the mid-19th century that the Yoruba came to know themselves as a distinctive people. Peel's detailed study of the encounter is based on the rich archives of the Anglican Church Missionary Society, which contain the journals written by the African agents of mission, who, as the first generation of literate Yoruba, played a key role in shaping modern Yoruba consciousness. This distinguished book pays special attention to the experiences of ordinary men and women and shows how the process of Christian conversion transformed Christianity into something more deeply Yoruba.

Book Free University Berlin

Download or read book Free University Berlin written by Gabriel Feld and published by Exemplary Projects. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berlin Free University is an imagination of what a building might be - a building designed to function as a piece of the city, adapting to the needs of its users while generating opportunities for social interaction. The university offers a window onto the politicized and optimistic discourse of the Sixties and Seventies, but at the same time illuminates contemporary debates around large projects of infrastructure and public space. This extensive study of the building combines texts with a visual survey containing specifically commissioned photographs as well as archive material, plans and construction details.

Book Exile and Cultural Hegemony

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sebastiaan Faber
  • Publisher : Vanderbilt University Press
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780826514226
  • Pages : 418 pages

Download or read book Exile and Cultural Hegemony written by Sebastiaan Faber and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Francisco Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War, a great many of the country's intellectuals went into exile in Mexico. During the three and a half decades of Francoist dictatorship, these exiles held that the Republic, not Francoism, represented the authentic culture of Spain. In this environment, as Sebastiaan Faber argues in Exile and Cultural Hegemony, the Spaniards' conception of their role as intellectuals changed markedly over time. The first study of its kind to place the exiles' ideological evolution in a broad historical context, Exile and Cultural Hegemony takes into account developments in both Spanish and Mexican politics from the early 1930s through the 1970s. Faber pays particular attention to the intellectuals' persistent nationalism and misplaced illusions of pan-Hispanist grandeur, which included awkward and ironic overlaps with the rhetoric employed by their enemies on the Francoist right. This embrace of nationalism, together with the intellectuals' dependence on the increasingly authoritarian Mexican regime and the international climate of the Cold War, eventually caused them to abandon the Gramscian ideal of the intellectual as political activist in favor of a more liberal, apolitical stance preferred by, among others, the Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset. With its comprehensive approach to topics integral to Spanish culture, both students of and those with a general interest in twentieth-century Spanish literature, history, or culture will find Exile and Cultural Hegemony a fascinating and groundbreaking work.
