Book Exporting Transnational Education

Download or read book Exporting Transnational Education written by Vangelis Tsiligiris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the dynamic and rapidly expanding field of transnational higher education (TNE). Despite the increasing importance of TNE and the interest it has attracted from various stakeholders, there is a lack of theoretical and empirical evidence on several aspects pertaining to its operation and governance. This book provides a unique combination of contributions from researchers and practitioners in a wide variety of case studies from TNE exporting countries in Europe and Asia. In doing so, the editors, with added support from Dr Christopher Hill, examine how this gap between research and practice can be bridged. This valuable edited collection will be of use to researchers and practitioners in transnational education, as well as students and scholars of international education and higher education policy.

Book Changes in the Higher Education Export Market Prospects for Russia

Download or read book Changes in the Higher Education Export Market Prospects for Russia written by Olga Vinokurova and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work examines the main characteristics of the higher education export market: developed English-speaking countries are most attractive for international students; students become more mobile as they reach higher levels of education; Asian students make up the largest group of international students enrolled in higher education programs at all levels. With a global student number of 200 million, the growth of the middle class in emerging and developing countries in Asia and Africa and a significant proportion of the young population explain forecasts of an increase in the number of students to 600 million by 2040. According to UNESCO, most of the recipient countries has been recording a significant increase in the number of international students, with the smallest increase observed for the UK, once one of the most attractive destinations. Trend changes are of particular interest for analysis. British education exports account for 7% of total services exports. International students make a significant contribution to the UK education sector: 1) due to the increased cost of training for non - residents, UK educational institutions are able to offer more expensive programs to residents, completely shifting these costs to foreign students. 2) British universities are known for their research, which also allow them to secure high positions in international University rankings with the research expenses accounting for up to 1/4th of the income received by educational institutions. The economy, and in particular the UK education sector, is clearly highly dependent on students from one country - China (22 per cent of all international students). Meanwhile China will reduce demand in the coming years due to political, economic, epidemiological and demographic factors. If the trend continues, the UK's position will be significantly undermined by 2030 due to a 2-fold reduction in its share of the education market. The role of geo-political factors is stressed. The current epidemiological situation and, as a result, the deterioration of economic conditions forces students to shift to closer regions and affordable programs. Amid this, there are additional opportunities for Russia. The number of students from abroad in Russian universities from 2010 to 2019 almost doubled. However there are still some major constraints on education in Russia: - lack of recognition of the Russian diploma in developed countries, - unstable economic situation (which may attract by the difference in currency rates and the relatively low cost of the program, but reduces the interest of students in further employment) and an insufficient number of programs in English. Simultaneously with the development of transnational and distance education, it should be noted that in the coming years it would be reasonable to focus on training of the students from neighbouring countries on Russian campuses, which contributes to additional financial revenues in the related industries. It is necessary to analyse the requirements of the market and solvent student demand in order to offer educational programs satisfying both.

Book excerpt: Trade in Higher Education: The role of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) - Internationalization of higher education has been evolving over the years. Today, trade in education has become an important framework under which cross-border mobility of students, institutions, programs, and teachers takes place. The General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) has systematized and formalized the conditions for trade in services including education. This book provides a detailed analysis of various dimensions of the GATS and its implications for development of higher education, especially in developing countries. Book Universities and Globalization

Download or read book Universities and Globalization written by Ravinder Kaur Sidhu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-15 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities and Globalization: To Market, To Market examines the operations of power and knowledge in international education under conditions of globalization, with a focus on the three biggest exporters of higher education--the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. An interdisciplinary approach based on the core social sciences is used to explore the power relations that shape global education networks. The role of nation-states in creating the conditions for education markets and the desire for a Westernized template of international education in the postcolonial world is discussed. The volume offers a sophisticated attempt to recast international education as a series of geopolitical and geoeconomic engagements that transcend simple supply and demand dynamics. Engaging with the theoretical debates about education and globalization, this book examines global cultural "flows" and boundary crossings, the cultural economy of education networks, and the possibilities for supra-territorial subjectivities. International education markets are examined from the perspectives of both first world producers and postcolonial consumers. By investigating how first world universities imagine and enact the global in their marketing practices, the expressions of cultural diversity valued by education markets, and the types of individual and institutional subjectivities merging from markets, Universities and Globalization: To Market, To Market offers students, faculty, administrators, marketing consultants, and others who work in the area a highly nuanced account of the global relations fostered by education markets. This original, critical examination of the forms and cultural politics of international education is a significant contribution to the field.

Book The WTO and the University

Download or read book The WTO and the University written by Roberta Malee Bassett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By and large, the debate about the merits of including higher education services within free trade policies has occurred outside of the United States, even though the U.S. Office of the Trade Representative has specifically included higher education services in its March 2003 negotiating offer to the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). This book emerged from research and conversations on the potential implications of free trade on American higher education, implications which have yet to lead to any real conversation or debate within the broad higher education community in the United States. It fills a niche in the literature on trade and higher education services by providing context and analysis of the trade issue in the American higher education context, as well as the pros and cons of free trade in higher education services from the perspectives of the U.S.-based actors.

Book Importing Transnational Education

Download or read book Importing Transnational Education written by Vangelis Tsiligiris and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impacts of transnational education (TNE) from the perspectives of institutions and countries that primarily act as hosts. The authors describe and analyse TNE across a wide geographical area comprised of both established and emerging TNE host countries, from Europe to Southeast Asia to less-discussed countries such as Nepal and Uzbekistan. Complementing the 2018 volume Exporting Transnational Education: Institutional Practice, Policy and National Goals, the book is organised into three principal themes: the impacts of TNE on capacity building, the sustainability of such developments, and the impacts on the student experience in host countries. As TNE is a dynamic and fast-moving area of international higher education, this book will appeal to scholars and administrators of international and transnational education.
