Book Export Processing Zones in Jamaica and Mauritius

Download or read book Export Processing Zones in Jamaica and Mauritius written by Matthew W. Roberts and published by Mellen University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compares the industrial development of Jamaica and Mauritius via Export Processing Zones (EPZs). The central questions in this research are: how, in theory and practice, do EPZs serve the development goals and policies of the countries; what factors are responsible for differences in the performance of the EPZs; what are the major lessons from Mauritius's and Jamaica's experiences with EPZs regarding the role of the state in development; and can the EPZs play an evolutionary role in the process of economic development in these countries.

Book Special Economic Zones

Download or read book Special Economic Zones written by Thomas Farole and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For countries as diverse as China and Mauritius, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have been a powerful tool to attract foreign investment, promote export-oriented growth, and generate employment; for many others, the results have been less than encouraging. While the benefits and limitations of zones will no doubt continue to be debated, what is clear is that policymakers are increasingly attracted to them as an instrument of trade, investment, industrial, and spatial policy. Since the mid 1980s, the number of newly-established zones has grown rapidly in almost all regions, with dramatic growth in developing countries. In parallel with this growth and in the evolving context of global trade and investment, zones are also undergoing significant change in both their form and function, with traditional export processing zones (EPZs) increasingly giving way to larger and more flexible SEZ models. This new context will bring significant opportunities for developing countries to take advantage of SEZs, but will also raise new challenges to their successful design and implementation. This volume aims to contribute to a better understanding of the role and practice of SEZs in developing countries, in order to better equip policymakers in making effective decisions in planning and implementing SEZ programs. It covers some of the emerging issues and challenges in SEZs – including upgrading, regional integration, WTO compliance, innovation, the environment, and gender issues – with practical case examples from SEZ programs in developing countries.

Book Globalization Export Orientated Employment and Social Policy

Download or read book Globalization Export Orientated Employment and Social Policy written by S. Razavi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender and development theory and analysis is replete with implicit assumptions that women's entry into the world of paid work will positively affect their status both in the household and in the public sphere. Until recently the debate on global factories and export production has remained focused on women's individual experience of export employment- and the extent to which this represents a positive opportunity or gross exploitation. In spite of the extended discussion of rights and citizenship in the global economy, little attention has hitherto been paid to the implications for women's entitlements arising out of their pivotal role in export sectors. Whilst many assume that women's visible and crucial presence in key economic sectors will be reflected in the ways in which social policies are formulated, there has been up to now little empirical and analytical engagement with this question. This volume, bringing together detailed commissioned studies from six developing countries, aims to fill this gap.

Book Transnational Cooperation Among Labor Unions

Download or read book Transnational Cooperation Among Labor Unions written by Michael E. Gordon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized labour faces many challenges in the increasingly global economy, including the portability of technology and capital, and lowered trade barriers. This text, however, presents evidence that unions can survive and grow if labour is willing to co-operate across national borders. The book is a study of such co-operation as an effective weapon against the exploitation of workers in today's world.
