The analysis presented is conclusive in its finding that the X-MHD is a highly versatile prime power source which can be operated without benefit of vacuum equipment in residual ambient pressure gases of various composition and at high repetition rate with various loads. At high repetition rate, the spent explosion products of a previous round are an ideal residual or purge gas. Energy conversion efficiency in excess of 10% should be attainable with optimized residual gases at ambient pressure, and 5-10% with spent explosion product residual gases at field levels currently achieveable with superconducting magnets. Book excerpt: The goals of the program were twofold: (1) To develop the technical base to allow for the design and construction of lightweight, multimegawatt deflagrating solid explosive driven MHD (C-MHD) and, (2) to evaluate the feasibility of multikilowatt, high-repetition-rate detonating solid explosive MHD (X-MHD) generators. The report is divided into two sections which are organized in a roughly parallel format. Part I covers the work on deflagrating explosive MHD while Part II covers detonating explosive MHD. Each part has an introduction, a description of the experimental apparatus, the test results, conclusions and recommendations for future development. In addition, part 1 has a section covering the selection of a solid propellant while part 2 has a separate section with some additional discussion of the X-MHD channel performance.

Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to investigate the feasibility of using explosive-driven MHD generators to produce pulses of various time durations and to investigate the feasibility of producing alternating currents. Four principal approaches were investigated: (1) Power densities of 5 times 10 to the 7th power w/m squared were achieved in Comp C4 explosive with copper and iron powder dopants. Detonation zone conductance was increased by three orders of magnitude, with magnetic Reynolds numbers approaching unity. (2) Sixty kilohertz alternating current was generated using segmented electrodes to commutate the current in an explosive-driven MHD channel and the output was transformer coupled to various loads. (3) One millisecond pulses with maximum power outputs of 277 Kw were achieved with 50 grams of seeded propellant. These fuels were successfully ignited using standard 20-mm electrically fired cartridges. (4) A series of pulses were generated in the explosive-driven MHD channel using a multiple charge transport mechanism. Channel pumping downtimes were found to limit this technique to the 10 to 20 pulse per second pulse repetition frequency.

These produced a relative acceleration of the detonation wave near the charge axis. The results are compared with three approximate models. An energy model is compared with the more conventional pressure model. High pressure was induced in a portion of a long rectangular charge by shock. Rather high detonation wave propagation rates were observed in the shocked region. These rates were as high as nine times steady state if the maximum slope of the position-time result was used and as high as two times steady state velocity if the average rate over the approximate shocked region were used. The results are considered tentative. (Author).
