Book excerpt: Literature on women's leadership reveals women are underrepresented in top leadership roles in public education in the U.S. (Skarla, 1999) and superintendency is the most male-dominated executive position of any profession in the United States. The object of this study was to explore the leadership journeys of five women school superintendents from small-midsize school districts in the remote geographic region of U.S (Alaska). This type of school leader may differ from mainland US state Superintendents because of Alaska's "frontier" and "independent" nature. The study used Super's career development theory and Mezirow's (1978) transformative learning theory as frameworks to uncover meaning-making of leadership development experiences, which are associated with leadership across the lifespan of the five women superintendents. This study employed a qualitative narrative research design. Narrative content was analyzed, using a combination of deductive and inductive approaches. Seven conclusions emerged from this study. First, experiences and activities that are associated with leadership and that occur in non-formal settings were important for leadership development of these women school superintendents. Second, experiences that gave women school superintendents' opportunities to show leadership and the recognition of their leadership by others helped build their self-concept of being a leader. Third, meaning making is a part of leadership learning of women school superintendents, which can occur in non-formal settings and can begin in early childhood. Fourth, family influenced the development of leadership qualities of women school superintendents, starting from the growth stage. Fifth, the self-concept of being an educational leader, who can make a positive impact or can perform leadership tasks, drove women school superintendents to take educational leadership positions. Sixth, women school superintendents have a supportive network because of the credibility they built over time. Seventh, women school superintendents have positive attitudes toward being female superintendents.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Although the leadership norm continues to be male-oriented, more women are occupying positions of leadership in our society. The prevalent question has shifted from whether or not women can lead to how effectively they lead. To better understand the effectiveness of female community leaders, this qualitative research study explores the common features in the paths of women who have attained leadership positions. The stories of these women were derived by conducting ten interviews with women who are in positions of leadership within their communities. The interviews used open-ended questions to elicit personal responses from the interviewees, and phenomenological methods were used as a guide for analysis. Six core themes emerged from the statements collected in the interviews. The experience of female leadership includes issues of: power vs. influence, inciting change, role models, challenges and obstacles, self-efficacy and identity, and effectual styles. The journeys of these women are explored in concert with existing literature in the area of female leadership. Implications for career advancement, gender stereotyping, and role models for women in leadership capacities are highlighted in this study. The approach is one of constructivism, thereby making sense of the perspectives of female leaders through a feminist lens.

In particular, women are underrepresented and Asian women are acutely underrepresented compared to the potential candidate population. At the same time, articles and research highlighting important performance and financial benefits from increasing women in executive teams continues to emerge. This study focused on insights from the leadership development journeys of five successful Asian women executives in US higher education. The purpose of this narrative study was to examine how these women described their leadership development journeys and whether critical reflection impacted their leadership development. Key insights from their stories were highlighted from interviews for aspiring Asian women candidates to better prepare for their career advancement. These insights include practical advice on mentor and network strategies as well as behavioral advice for aspiring candidates to develop skills to be more assertive and take calculated risks in reaching for stretch positions. Insights are also documented for academic institutions to improve their leadership development construct, including improved training formats, development programs and selection processes. There are many research reports which explore gender differences in leadership and a few that focus on minority challenges. However, the discussion of Asian women in the context of educational leadership is limited and this research will contribute to leadership studies.

Book excerpt: There is an increasing concern about the absence of women in senior positions in academia and administration within institutions (Johnson, 2016). There is limited research to compare the journeys of women leaders in academics and administration. This study is an examination of women’s experiences of perceived barriers to leadership roles in faculty and administration. Using comprehensive interviews, this study explores personal accounts to emphasize apparent barriers to career advancement. The goal of the study is to explore women in senior positions in academia and administrative paths to leadership. The male dominated society has made it challenging for women to grow their careers in higher education. Bonawitz (2009) assessed factors including demographics, gender norms, education, employee relations, family, and unwritten rules. Additionally, researchers have evaluated policies and procedures to work on increasing the number of women in educational leadership (Bonawitz, 2009) Historically women have been a part of higher education, yet it’s not until recently that they have been represented in literature (Bonawitz, 2009). This study is a consideration of gender with an emphasis on institutional obstacles that hinder the progression of women into executive leadership positions in higher education. The study explores the leadership journeys of seven women leading in the roles of vice president level and up in administration and seven women serving in the roles of chair level and up on the academic side in the USG. I used intersectionality as a theoretical framework for the study. Yuval-Davis (2013) expressed that intersectionality is the examination of gender, race, and class as intersections. Lived experiences were examined to explore barriers and strategies that can impact individuals and groups concerning characteristics of gender and higher education. The study allows intersectionality theory to show different identities of women that are not often talked about in literature, while avoiding generalizations.
