Book Exploring the Within and Between person Effects of Alcohol Use and Discrepant Drinking on Mood and Relationship Functioning

Download or read book Exploring the Within and Between person Effects of Alcohol Use and Discrepant Drinking on Mood and Relationship Functioning written by Charlie Champion and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use among romantic partners is known to be related to a variety of detrimental outcomes, such as decreased relationship satisfaction and increases in conflict. However, discrepant drinking among partners may be a stronger predictor of relationship outcomes over and above the amount of alcohol use. Currently, little is known about potential differences in the within- and between-person effects and discrepancy’s effect on mood, particularly among community samples. The current study investigated the effects of both individual and partner alcohol use, as well as discrepant drinking, on mood and relationship functioning. Data were obtained from 280 heterosexual romantic couples using a measurement burst daily dairy design over the course of one year. Actor Partner Interdependence Model and Dyadic Score Model analyses were used to investigate the effect of alcohol use and discrepant drinking on mood and relationship functioning, both at the within- and between- person levels. Specifically, analyses investigated the effects of no drinking versus moderate drinking, no drinking versus binge drinking, and moderate drinking versus binge drinking. Results revealed that while binge drinking may be related to positive outcomes proximally, the cumulative effects at the between-person level are detrimental. Moreover, discrepant drinking appears most detrimental when women outdrink their partners. These findings have important implications for refining and improving upon couples-based interventions aimed at alcohol-use problems among non-clinical couples.

Book Alcohol and Pleasure

Download or read book Alcohol and Pleasure written by Stanton Peele and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no simple threshold between the experience of drinking and the pleasure it can bring on the one hand and the pain and suffering caused by alcohol abuse on the other. But if we are to understand the role of alcohol in society, then at the very least we need to acknowledge the pleasure as well as the pain. Alcohol and Pleasure aims to bring together existing knowledge on the role of pleasure in drinking and determine whether the concept is useful for scientific understanding and policy consideration.

Book Daily Alcohol Use and Relationship Functioning in Young Adult Romantic Relationships

Download or read book Daily Alcohol Use and Relationship Functioning in Young Adult Romantic Relationships written by Ashley David Levitt and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use is thought to have a range of effects on functioning in romantic relationships, from positive to negative. However, few studies have attempted to explain why and under what circumstances these effects occur, or examined the possibility of bi-directional influences between relationship functioning and alcohol use. The present study sought to address these limitations by examining bi-directional effects of alcohol use and relationship processes in a normal population sample of 81 couples who completed daily reports of both behaviors for a period of about 3 weeks. Results from analyses conducted using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) showed uniformly positive effects of drinking with one's partner, but largely negative effects of drinking and of drinking to intoxication on later relationship functioning. Negative relationship processes also shaped later alcohol use among both men and women. However, interaction analyses showed that these bi-directional effects were more numerous among women than men. Indeed, only women drank in response to feeling disconnected to their partners and only women drank with their partners in what might be considered a strategic effort to regulate relationship dynamics. Overall the results of the current study indicate that the associations between drinking and relationship processes are complex and bi-directional and their importance is perhaps greater for women than men.

Book Counselling the Person Beyond the Alcohol Problem

Download or read book Counselling the Person Beyond the Alcohol Problem written by Richard Bryant-Jefferies and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2001-08-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of Richard Bryant-Jefferies' work with problem drinkers is his belief in the power and effectiveness of the person-centred approach to counselling. He suggests that many alcohol problems develop out of, or are connected with, relationship difficulties. He highlights the importance of building a therapeutic relationship with the person, and of engaging with their individuality to encourage sustainable lifestyle change underpinned by personal growth. This practical book shows how such client-focused counselling can support problem drinkers who are seeking to develop and sustain a less alcohol-centred way of life. Demonstrating how the client-counsellor relationship can be harnessed to empower the individual to help themselves, Richard * describes the health risks and effects on family life of alcohol dependency * considers the differences between young and old problem drinkers * analyses the support services available to those seeking change * suggests ways of coping with relapse. Supported by contributions from clients who have undergone counselling for alcohol reliance, this is a comprehensive and positive guide for people working with those who have a problematic relationship with alcohol.

This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook provides a broad and comprehensive overview of psychological research on alcohol consumption. It explores the psychological theories underpinning alcohol use and misuse, discusses the interventions that can be designed around these theories, and offers key insight into future developments within the field. A range of international experts assess the unique factors that contribute to alcohol-related behaviour as differentiated from other health-related behaviours. They cover the theory and context of alcohol consumption, including possible implications of personality type, motivation and self-regulation, and cultural and demographic factors. After reviewing the evidence for psychological theories and predictors as accounts for alcohol consumption, the book goes on to focus on external influences on consumption and interventions for reducing alcohol consumption, including those based on purchasing and consumption behaviour, technologies such as personalised feedback apps, and social and media phenomena such as “Dry January” and “Hello Sunday Morning”. It brings together cutting-edge contemporary research on alcohol consumption in childhood and adolescence, including topics such as managing offers or drinks, “pre-drinking”, online identities, how children develop their beliefs about alcohol and how adolescents discuss alcohol with their parents. The book also offers a rounded presentation of the tensions involved in debates around the psychological impacts of alcohol use, discussing its role in helping people to socialise and unwind; as well as recognising the possible negative impacts on health, education and relationships. This book will be of interest to academics, policymakers, public health officials, practitioners, charities and other stakeholders interested in understanding how alcohol affects people psychologically. Book Examining Alcohol Abuse Perceptions of Alcohol Abuse and Emotional verbal Aggression in Romantic Relationships Using Multiple Measures

Download or read book Examining Alcohol Abuse Perceptions of Alcohol Abuse and Emotional verbal Aggression in Romantic Relationships Using Multiple Measures written by Logan Alexander Stigall and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study extends previous research on the implications of romantic partner discrepant alcohol consumption for romantic relationships by (a) examining the associations among alcohol abuse (Daily Drinking Questionnaire), perceptions of partner's alcohol abuse (Adult Behavior Checklist), romantic relationship satisfaction (Relationship Assessment Scale), emotional/verbal aggression and (b) examining these associations using both self-reported (Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory) and observationally assessed (Couple Conflict Interaction Task) emotional/verbal aggression. Data were derived from 258 young adult couples (N=516). Using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model path analysis framework, I found that alcohol abuse and perceptions of partner's alcohol abuse were negatively associated with relationship satisfaction, but only alcohol abuse was positively associated with emotional/verbal aggression. However, results should be considered in light of small effect sizes and limited generalizability. These findings provide a novel contribution by examining perceptions of partner's alcohol abuse and its association with emotional/verbal aggression. Additionally, this study has implications for couple therapy because of the use of multiple methods of measuring aggression.

Book excerpt: Are you seeking a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding alcoholism? Do you find yourself struggling with AUD (Alcohol Use Disorder) or know someone who is? Look no further than Dr. Lida Prypchan's newest compilation of essays - a breakthrough work of clinical analysis that dives into the multifaceted nature of alcoholism. As a seasoned psychiatrist, Dr. Prypchan has spent three decades exploring the interplay between mental health and alcohol consumption. In this book, she compiles a series of essays that examine the overarching disorder of alcoholism and its intricate web of associations, from personality disorders to stress, depression, anxiety, PTSD and poly-substance abuse. Dr. Prypchan meticulously explores the underlying causes and propensities that lead to alcoholism and other related disorders. For instance, she delves into the compelling correlation between Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and AUD. Her research shows that individuals with ASPD are more likely to exhibit psychopathic tendencies when they are alcoholics. In addition, Dr. Prypchan investigates how situational stressors like divorce often play a role in heavy drinking and the development of AUD. The book spotlights two issues of growing concern, the implications of drinking for young people - (more specifically the social phenomenon that is college 'drunkorexia') and the complex relationship between women and alcohol. It also includes a groundbreaking exploration of the way social media can impact alcohol and substance abuse - by compounding existing feelings of alienation. Dr. Prypchan argues that alcohol is only a temporary escape from the feelings of loneliness and isolation that plague many individuals. Despite seeking solace or relief from solitude through drinking, individuals often find themselves more detached than before. Human connection and companionship - not alcohol - are key to combating this loneliness. In this groundbreaking work, Dr. Lida Prypchan has created a valuable resource for anyone seeking to better understand the complexities of alcoholism. Her insights into the relationship between alcoholism and various mental disorders are enlightening. With her meticulous analysis and multifaceted approach, Dr. Prypchan shows that recovery is possible for even the most resistant individuals - providing hope and inspiration for those who seek it.

Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
