Book excerpt: Many international students register at South African public universities but encounter serious difficulties in integrating into the culture of these institutions. This study identified and analysed factors contributing to the integration of international students in South Africa and the universities at which they are registered, using TintoaÌ22́Ơ4́Øs Student Integration Model as a theoretical framework. The purpose of this study was to explore the academic and social experiences of international students at South African universities, the influence of their academic and social experiences on their integration in South Africa and the institutions they are registered at, as well as the coping strategies they employ to facilitate their integration in this new environment. Secondary data analysis was used to explore the experiences of international students in South Africa. The data were originally gathered for the purposes of a project on student mobility in Africa using a mixed methods design. For the purpose of this study, only qualitative data collected from face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 50 international students from five South African universities was used. A thematic method was used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that international students at South African universities are faced with numerous challenges in their attempts to integrate in the new environment. These include language barriers, unfamiliar teaching styles, discrimination and crime, and a lack of socialisation with domestic students. However, the findings also revealed that international students appreciated the academic benefits they gained from studying at South African universities.

Book excerpt: Applying a critical and holistic framework, International Students in Higher Education: Language, Identity, and Experience from a Holistic Perspective explores the lived experiences of four multilingual international students at a Canadian University. Vander Tavares investigates how the students experience life in the host community, construct their multiple identities, and develop their proficiency in the English language. Additionally, Tavares examines the ways in which the institutional context impacts the students’ experiences by foregrounding the voices of domestic students, faculty and support staff, and their experiences and perspectives on international students, multiculturalism, and multilingualism. Drawing from theories of cultural and social psychology, post-structuralism, multilingualism, and a sociocognitive approach to second language acquisition, this project presents rich ethnographic portraits of the students’ experiences. This contextualised and humanised portrayal of the students’ individual journeys challenges the prevailing discourse of deficit that has traditionally been used to characterise the multilingual international student experience. Overall, this book demonstrates that an ethical understanding of multilingual international students’ experiences requires critical attention to the sociocultural and sociolinguistic contexts of their academic communities and a holistic approach that considers the multiple domains of lived experience that the students navigate.

Book excerpt: International students who move to the United States to study can experience both positive and negative challenges during the process of achieving their educational goals at the higher educational institutions they are enrolled in. This study explored how academic experiences of international students from different racial/or ethnic groups may or may not differ from each other. For this qualitative study, fourteen international graduate students of diverse backgrounds enrolled in the Winter and/or Summer 2018 semesters at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) were interviewed. The results of this study show that there are differences as well as similarities in the academic experiences of international graduate students that can be found in first arrival experiences, cultural challenges, social networks, communication challenges, academic challenges, behaviors, and attitudes. The results of this research provide an overview of the academic experiences of international graduate students of diverse backgrounds and can be used for future research and for greater awareness at institutions and organizations.
