Book Exploring the Role of Social Support Ethnic Identity and Psychological Empowerment on Drug Use and Sexual Risk Behavior Among Black Hispanic Female Adolescents

Download or read book Exploring the Role of Social Support Ethnic Identity and Psychological Empowerment on Drug Use and Sexual Risk Behavior Among Black Hispanic Female Adolescents written by Ijeoma Opara and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent females of color, particularly Black and Hispanic adolescents, are often viewed as a homogenous group with adolescent boys of color, thus ignoring unique gender-racial specific risk and protective factors to drug use and HIV/AIDS that may be present. Such an absence can lead to flawed outcomes in HIV, STIs (sexually transmitted infections), and substance abuse prevention work that may continue to marginalize girls of color. Using empowerment theory and intersectionality as a framework, this study examines the extent to which ethnic identity, social support, and psychological empowerment is on drug use and sexual risk behavior. The study uses a sample of (N = 830) female adolescents who identify as being Black only or Non-White Hispanic only. All participants resided in a northeastern urban community in New Jersey. A majority of the participants (90%) were between the ages of 15–17 years of age. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to test the factor structure of the scale used to measure psychological empowerment and structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized model of the mediating role of drug use on sexual risk behavior. Findings revealed that 30-day drug use significantly mediated the relationship between social support, ethnic identity, and psychological empowerment on sexual risk behavior. By highlighting the strengths of Black and Hispanic girls, researchers can attempt to learn from those who are not engaging in risky behaviors as a way to incorporate a strengths-based view in prevention.

Book The Importance of Different Sources of Social Support on the Associations Between Racial ethnic Discrimination Experiences and Worries on Adolescent Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms

Download or read book The Importance of Different Sources of Social Support on the Associations Between Racial ethnic Discrimination Experiences and Worries on Adolescent Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms written by Gloria Arielle Stout and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a risk and resilience framework, the current study examined whether different sources of social support moderate the associations between racial/ethnic discrimination experiences and worries on adolescent internalizing, and externalizing symptoms among a sample of Black and Hispanic adolescents. The potential modifying role of race/ethnicity was also explored. The current study used the third wave of data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN). The total sample included 835 self-identified Black and Hispanic adolescents (M [subscript age] = 15.2, SD = 1.58; 50.9 % female, 49.1% male). Using path analysis and multiple group analysis via Mplus (version 8.6), results showed that racial/ethnic discrimination experiences were associated with both adolescents internalizing and externalizing symptoms, whereas racial/ethnic discrimination worries were associated with only adolescent internalizing symptoms. There were no significant multigroup differences by sources of support or race/ethnicity. Although the current study did not find support for the protective model of resilience, there was some support for the compensatory model of resilience

Book The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health written by Esther D. Rothblum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of research on the mental health of sexual minorities-defined as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or same-gender attracted; as well as the mental health of gender minorities-defined as individuals who do not fully identify with their sex assigned at birth, including people who are transgender or gender non-binary. The twenty-first century has seen encouraging improvements in sampling, methods, and funding opportunities for research with sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations; nevertheless, a key purpose of this Handbook is to identify lingering gaps in research in order to motivate future scientists to expand knowledge about SGM mental health. The volume begins with a historical overview, followed by sections on mental health categories/diagnoses (such as anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, and suicide) and specific sexual and gender minority populations (including examinations of diverse ethnicities and orientations/identities). The handbook concludes with chapters on stigma, the role of resilience, and future directions for research with SGM groups. The volume is aimed at researchers conducting studies on the mental health of SGM populations, clinicians and researchers interested in psychiatric disorders that affect SGM populations, clinicians using evidence-based practice in the treatment of SGM patients/clients, students in mental health programs (clinical psychology, psychiatry, clinical social work, and psychiatric nursing), and policy makers.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book The Role of Ethnic Identity in Participatory Processes that Facilitate Psychological Empowerment Among Urban Youth

Download or read book The Role of Ethnic Identity in Participatory Processes that Facilitate Psychological Empowerment Among Urban Youth written by Elena Tamanas and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study involved the development and testing of a path model to predict psychological empowerment for urban youth ages 13-17. Data from a survey of urban youth in a city in the northeast United States were analyzed to test the model. The variables included in the model were: perceived neighborhood problems, neighborhood sense of community, social support, participation in community and school activities, and ethnic identity. Utilizing structural equation modeling, survey data were analyzed to determine whether the hypothesized model fit the data and to examine how the five predictor factors influenced an individual's level of psychological empowerment, as measured by the revised sociopolitical control scale. Path models were developed for the full sample and for gender-specific subgroups. Results showed that the hypothesized model provided a good fit to the data from the full sample of participants and crucial differences existed in the models for females and males. A key finding of this study was the critical role of ethnic identity in the psychological empowerment process; it was empowerment's strongest predictor variable for all three models. Key gender-related differences included the direct effect of perceived neighborhood problems on empowerment and the negative effect of perceived neighborhood problems on social support being mediated by neighborhood sense of community for females but not males. Strategies to promote ethnic identity development and implications for practice based on full sample and gender-specific differences are presented. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the role culture, family, and environment have in the prevention of Latino substance abuse Information about the substance abuse behaviors among Latino populations has been limited. Substance Abusing Latinos: Current Research on Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment fills this void by presenting the latest research on the epidemic of substance abuse now afflicting the Latino community. Ethnic differences are reviewed, including specific studies covering gang members, low-income urban women, risky behaviors, and language preference indicators of acculturation. This book does more than simply present the research—it discusses effective treatment strategies to help practitioners provide quality, culturally competent care to lacking Latino populations. Latinos, the largest minority in the United States, have an increasing alcohol and illicit drug use problem. Culture, acculturation, and language hold powerful sway in the research of Latino/a substance abuse. Substance Abusing Latinos: Current Research on Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment delves deeply into troubling issues such as gang membership, sexual abuse, the lack of healthy family role models, the effects of different levels of acculturation, the lack of health insurance, and rampant involvement with the criminal system. The research is used as a foundation to focus on the latest advances of substance abuse prevention and culturally competent intervention programs. Each chapter is extensively referenced to reinforce research. Substance Abusing Latinos: Current Research on Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment explores: substance abuse among gang members in a small city childhood sexual abuse and drug use among low-income Puerto Rican women a comparison of risky behaviors of African-American and Cuban-American adolescent juvenile offenders acculturation status and substance use prevention with Mexican and Mexican-American youth culturally competent intervention with families of Latino youth at risk for drug abuse psychiatric, family, and ethnicity-related factors that can impact treatment among Hispanic substance abusing adolescents HIV/AIDS prevention practice with substance abusers Substance Abusing Latinos: Current Research on Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment is essential reading for educators, students, practitioners working with Latino/a populations, and substance abuse researchers.

Book The State of Hispanic Girls

Download or read book The State of Hispanic Girls written by National Coalition of Hispanic Health and Human Services Organizations (U.S.) and published by Cossmho Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, a series of focus groups was held to explore the factors that promote resilience among Hispanic girls. At least 4 focus groups, composed of no less than 6 and no more than 15 participants, were conducted at each of the 6 urban sites. In spite of the variations in Hispanic subgroup membership of the focus group participants, the findings from these sessions suggested one clear, salient conclusion: cultural protective factors play a critical role in buffering Hispanic girls from risky and damaging behaviors, such as delinquency, depression, pregnancy, and substance abuse. This report also offers recommendations to address the serious risks facing Hispanic girls. Focus group participants confirmed the need to develop culturally appropriate programs and messages for Hispanic girls and their parents. They agreed about the importance of involving Hispanic community-based organizations in the design, implementation, and evaluation of any campaign to empower Hispanic girls. (Contains 131 end notes.) Book Ethnic Identity Development and Adolescent Health Related Decision Making

Download or read book Ethnic Identity Development and Adolescent Health Related Decision Making written by Brenda M. Frye and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An objective of this study was to explore the relationship of ethnic identity development, among a group of adolescents in the Bay area, self-esteem, and health risk behaviors. Past research has mixed findings with regard to whether ethnic identity development is a protective factor to adolescents engaging in risky behaviors such as, drinking, drug use, smoking, and sexually risky behaviors. Some research has indicated that ethnic identity does serve as a protective factor among some groups of adolescents when drug use is concerned. An additional objective of this study was to better understand the relationship of self-esteem, ethnic identity, and health related decision-making. Gender, age, and ethnic group membership were also looked at as they related to health risk behavior among adolescents in this sample. Four hundred and seventy seven ethnically diverse adolescents between the ages of 13-18 from local Bay area high schools voluntarily participated in this investigation. This study contained a sub-sample of 124 Latino adolescents, and 88 Asian adolescents. Results supported the role that ethnic identity has as a protective factor to health risk behaviors among some groups of adolescents. Ethnic identity and self-esteem were found to be positively correlated in this study. Furthermore, self-esteem was found to be a protective factor to engaging in health risk behaviors among those adolescents who were not Caucasian when compared with Caucasian adolescents. Finally, gender differences were found on the Affirmation and Belonging subscale of the MEIM in terms of health risk behaviors. Findings from this study have implications for designing preventive programs for adolescents from diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, these findings point to the importance of considering ethnic identity, ethnicity, and self-esteem in the prediction of health risk behaviors"--Leaves ii-iii.
