Despite impressions that bikeshare systems exist solely for tourism, recreation or privileged users, research has shown that bike-share is becoming a transportation mode used by a diverse set of users for various transportation needs. Additionally, a positive relationship has been established between bike-share and transit although most studies on this matter have focused on systems outside the United States. Bike share and transit benefit each other by: (1) contributing to sustainable transportation goals by improving mobility and greenhouse gas reductions, (2) solving the “last mile” problem, (3) reduce overcrowding at a fraction of traditional capacity capital investments, and (4) extending the radius of influence of mass transit stations. While synergy between cycling and transit systems has been documented, the influence of bike-share and transit has been less covered. This study uses data gathered from 10 US cities to describe the effects bikeshare and transit have on each other. This project will explore the factors that are associated with increased bikeshare trips based on sociodemographic, built environment, and transit system characteristics and the magnitude of the effect of bikeshare on rail rapid transit boardings. Ultimately, it is of interest to address whether bikeshare linked to rapid rail transit stations has greater usage rates.

Book excerpt: A bicycle-sharing system, or "bike share," is a program that distributes and organizes fleets of publicly shared bikes throughout a city or region for users to rent for transportation or recreation. Through single-use fees or membership plans, users are able to access bikes across each system's designated service area. Bicycle-sharing programs have been delivering benefits of increased urban mobility, accessible recreation, and more sustainable transportation in more than 2,000 cities around the world. In the United States of America, bicycle-sharing systems are present within all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Spreading rapidly in a positive trend, expansions of existing bicycle sharing systems and implementation of new systems occur in the United States on a near-monthly basis. The first public bike-sharing system to be developed and implemented within the United States was SmartBike DC in 2008, which was later replaced by the Capital Bikeshare system in 2010. During 2010, four additional systems launched in the cities of Denver, Colorado; Des Moines, Iowa; and Minneapolis, Minnesota and on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. By the end of 2018 there were nearly 250 municipalities (either cities or counties) with active bike-sharing systems that had been implemented within their jurisdictions. This publication summarizes the current landscape of bicycle-sharing systems across various municipalities and jurisdictions in the United States of America. The document is a comprehensive accounting of all presently-implemented systems with at least five stations and/or 20 bikes across the country. PAHO hopes this publication serves as a source of information for policymakers, community leaders, NGOs, and others who may be interested in implementing new bike shares or further developing existing systems. Resources in this document can help identify other cities or municipalities with similar objectives and/or comparable contexts in order to learn from each other's actions, experiences, and challenges.

Book excerpt: Free-floating bikeshare is a relatively new service in North America but offers significant mobility benefits and intriguing potential for first- and last-mile access to transit. This study of Portland's Biketown system will explore whether the introduction of bikeshare has a complementary effect for transit ridership, that is: does presence or usage of bikeshare lead to an increase in transit use? Additionally, because Biketown has both docked and free-floating bikes available, this study will examine whether the introduction of free-floating bikeshare leads to higher increases in transit ridership than traditional docked bikeshare. Because the system has gone through a variety of changes to its home area and operating rules, this study completes a longitudinal study of TriMet transit ridership in areas where service has expanded or docking rules have been changed. This study is unique; although many previous studies have explored the usage of bicycles or bikeshare for first- and last-mile transit access, few studies have considered free-floating bikeshare's relationship to transit.

Book excerpt: This thesis looks at the effects of new mobility services on emissions, via travel behavior and vehicle design improvements. Using NHTS data we find that right sizing allowed by shared mobility services would significantly affect CAFE compliance because most fuel standards would be met by moving people into more fuel efficient vehicles and thus increasing the number of these sold by companies. We then found that right sizing has the ability to reduce fuel consumption by more than 40% depending on the car replacement scenario. These reductions can make additional improvements by incorporating bikeshare within the shared mobility service. To further understand the possible effects of bikeshare, we then focus our research in the Chicago area, where we find that bikeshare has a net positive impact on transit ridership, and that this effect increases as more time passes. We then looked at Portland’s Biketown to understand the effect of transit on bikeshare, but results were inconclusive. Overall we find that mobility services will likely reduce fuel use, and increasing bikeshare use can be used to grow this reduction, while also increasing the use of transit.

Book excerpt: Bicycle share systems, by providing the opportunity for the automobile's spontaneous mobility without the destructive impacts, are seen as a low cost and critical tool for improving urban mobility while avoiding the problems of automobile oriented urban design. Public transportation systems are often hindered with the "final mile" problem, where transit agencies cannot attract patrons to due to the lack of high quality, reliable feeder transit services. Bike share systems can potentially extend the reach of core quality transit services. The bicycle share system "final mile" solution is often cited by planners, but with little empirical evidence. The planning industry also argues that separated cycling infrastructure encourages higher cycling rates. Existing literature indicates a positive relationship with general cycling, and between bicycle share systems and unseparated bicycle lanes. Minimal research has been undertaken using bicycle share system trip data to analyze the relationship between the number of trips and presence of separated cycling infrastructure. Washington D.C.'s Capital Bikeshare system is a pioneering and successful system in North America, with over two million trips annually. A multivariable statistical analysis and visualization of the publicly available empirical trip data from Capital Bikeshare finds a statistically significant positive relationship between the rates of cycling trips and separated cycling infrastructure for most trips, and between the rates of cycling trips and Metrorail high frequency transit services during morning and evening peak trips.

Bicycle Justice and Urban Transformation demonstrates that for those with privilege, bicycling can be liberatory, a lifestyle choice, whereas for those surviving at the margins, cycling is not a choice, but an often oppressive necessity. Ignoring these "invisible" cyclists skews bicycle improvements towards those with choices. This book argues that it is vital to contextualize bicycling within a broader social justice framework if investments are to serve all street users equitably.
