Download or read book Failure to Disrupt written by Justin Reich and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Science “Reading List for Uncertain Times” Selection “A must-read for anyone with even a passing interest in the present and future of higher education.” —Tressie McMillan Cottom, author of Lower Ed “A must-read for the education-invested as well as the education-interested.” —Forbes Proponents of massive online learning have promised that technology will radically accelerate learning and democratize education. Much-publicized experiments, often underwritten by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, have been launched at elite universities and elementary schools in the poorest neighborhoods. But a decade after the “year of the MOOC,” the promise of disruption seems premature. In Failure to Disrupt, Justin Reich takes us on a tour of MOOCs, autograders, “intelligent tutors,” and other edtech platforms and delivers a sobering report card. Institutions and investors favor programs that scale up quickly at the expense of true innovation. Learning technologies—even those that are free—do little to combat the growing inequality in education. Technology is a phenomenal tool in the right hands, but no killer app will shortcut the hard road of institutional change. “I’m not sure if Reich is as famous outside of learning science and online education circles as he is inside. He should be...Reading and talking about Failure to Disrupt should be a prerequisite for any big institutional learning technology initiatives coming out of COVID-19.” —Inside Higher Ed “The desire to educate students well using online tools and platforms is more pressing than ever. But as Justin Reich illustrates...many recent technologies that were expected to radically change schooling have instead been used in ways that perpetuate existing systems and their attendant inequalities.” —Science

Book Token Economy

Download or read book Token Economy written by Shermin Voshmgir and published by Token Kitchen. This book was released on 2020-06-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of the book Token Economy originally published in June 2019. The basic structure of this second edition is the same as the first edition, with slightly updated content of existing chapters and four additional chapters: "User-Centric Identities," "Privacy Tokens," "Lending Tokens," and How to Design a Token System and more focus on the Web3. //Part one outlines the fundamental building blocks of the Web3, including the role of cryptography and user-centric digital identities. Part two explains Web3 applications like smart contracts, DAOs & tokens. The last two parts of the book focus on tokens as the atomic unit of the Web3, explaining the properties and functions of money and outlining the emerging field of decentralized finance (DeFi) that might power a potential future digital barter economy. Use cases such as asset tokens, purpose driven tokens, BAT (Basic Attention Token), social media tokens (Steemit, Hive and Reddit), privacy tokens, and stable tokens are explored, including the role of CBDCs (Central Bank Digital Currencies) and Facebook's Libra.//Tokens - often referred to as cryptocurrencies - can represent anything from an asset to an access right, such as gold, diamonds, a fraction of a Picasso painting or an entry ticket to a concert. Tokens could also be used to reward social media contributions, incentivize the reduction of CO2 emissions, or even ones attention for watching an ad. While it has become easy to create a token, which is collectively managed by a public Web3 infrastructure like a blockchain network, the understanding of how to apply these tokens is still vague. This book attempts to summarize existing knowledge about blockchain networks and other distributed ledgers as the backbone of the Web3, and contextualize the socio-economic implications of the Web3 applications such as smart contracts, tokens, and DAOs to the concepts of money, economics, governance and decentralized finance (DeFi).//The industry keeps referring to “Blockchain” as different from “Bitcoin,” creating an artificial divide that is often misleading. There seems to be too little understanding about the fact that Bitcoin is a blockchain network, which is (a) globally managed by people who mostly do not know each other, and (b) enabled by the consensus protocol that (c) incentivizes all network actors for their contributions with a native token. The governance rules are tied to the minting of a native blockchain token. The Bitcoin token can, therefore, be seen as the currency of a distributed Internet tribe, called the Bitcoin network, where network actors are rewarded with Bitcoins, just as the Ether is the currency of the distributed Internet tribe Ethereum network, or Sia is the native currency of the Sia network. The Bitcoin network and other distributed ledgers all represent a collectively maintained public infrastructure and are the backbone of the next generation Internet, what the crypto community refers to as the Web3.

Book Exploring People s Willingness to Enter the Metaverse in Relation to Their Overall Knowledge on Web3 Blockchain Cryptocurrency

Download or read book Exploring People s Willingness to Enter the Metaverse in Relation to Their Overall Knowledge on Web3 Blockchain Cryptocurrency written by Meri Grant and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Keywords: Metaverse; Web3; Blockchain Technology; Cryptocurrency; NFT; Smart Contracts; AR/ VR/XR****This thesis continues a previous study that was conducted by the author & investigates the willingness of individuals to enter the Metaverse, an immersive environment where users have the ability to communicate & interact with one other. Furthermore, it examines people's enthusiasm in using this new technology and assesses the stage at which the Metaverse is now being accepted and adopted by the users. The research utilizes an online survey as a quantitative research method to collect data from a sample of participants and aims to explore the factors that affect people's willingness to enter the Metaverse and identify potential motivators, as well as concerns for adoption. Furthermore, it assesses the level of understanding and knowledge of Web3, Blockchain, and Cryptocurrency among the participants and examines how this knowledge affects their willingness to engage with the Metaverse. Prior to that, the participants were asked to estimate their level of knowledge on the above-mentioned topics. The findings revealed a positive and significant association between self-rated knowledge of Web3 & Blockchain technology and entering the Metaverse. However, there was no significant link between actual knowledge of Blockchain Technology and the likelihood of entering the Metaverse. Participants with higher self-rated knowledge of Web3 & Blockchain technology were more inclined to enter the virtual world. Furthermore, ownership of cryptocurrency was found to be a significant factor, as individuals who possessed cryptocurrency demonstrated a greater willingness to enter the Metaverse compared to non-owners. Moreover, participants tended to overestimate their actual knowledge, resulting in lower actual knowledge levels than self-reported knowledge. The main motivator for entering the Metaverse was gaining new experiences & attending to concerts & events, while concerns regarding privacy and security resulted in the biggest worries. Keywords: Metaverse; Web3; Blockchain Technology; Cryptocurrency; NFTs; Smart Contracts; AR/ VR/XR
