The theoretical framework is presented at a pedagogical level, experiments and future projects are reviewed, and the results and their interpretation are discussed in depth.

Book Dirkfest 92 A Symposium In Honor Of J D Walecka s Sixtieth Birthday

Download or read book Dirkfest 92 A Symposium In Honor Of J D Walecka s Sixtieth Birthday written by Maung Maung Khin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-12-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor J Dirk Walecka has made significant and lasting contributions to the field of nuclear physics. His work on many-body theory and electron scattering from nuclei profoundly influenced the direction of research in electromagnetic nuclear physics. His formulation of semileptonic weak interactions with nuclei introduced many nuclear physicists to the 'standard model' and the concept of the nucleus as a 'laboratory' for studying fundamental interactions. His development of meson-baryon field theories for nuclear systems ('quantum hadrodynamics') initiated novel research on relativistic effects in nuclei, high-density nuclear matter, and applications of field-theoretic techniques to the nuclear many-body problem. This proceedings focusses on three major areas of Professor Walecka's research: many-body theory, electroweak interactions in nuclei and relativistic nuclear physics. The topics discussed cover a broad and interesting range in condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, high-energy physics and cosmology.

  • ISBN : 0306470659
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book Advances in Nuclear Physics written by J.W. Negele and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents five pedagogical articles spanning frontier developments in contemporary nuclear physics ranging from the physics of a single nucleon to nucleosynthesis in the Big Bang. Although the objectives of Advances in Nuclear Physics have been and will continue to be quite distinct from those of conventional conference proceedings, the articles in this volume are carefully edited and expanded manuscripts based on an outstanding series of lectures delivered at the VI J. A. Swieca Summer School in Brazil. Starting at the smallest scale, the first article by Dan Olof Riska addresses realistic chiral symmetric models of the nucleon. Since the analytic tools are not yet developed to solve nonperturbative QCD directly, significant effort has been devoted in recent years to the development of models which incorporate and are constrained by the approximate chiral symmetry manifested in QCD. This article provides a clear introduction to chiral symmetry and the Skyrme model, and discusses the Skyrme model’s relation to the chiral bag model, its extensions, and its application to nucleons and hyperons.

Book Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer IV

Download or read book Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer IV written by A. V. Radyushkin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings include talks given at the 4th Workshop on Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer at Jefferson Lab, Newport News, VA, USA, the world''s leading facility performing research on nuclear, hadronic and quark-gluon structure of matter. Exclusive reactions are becoming one of the major sources of information about the deep structure of the nucleons and other hadrons. The workshop focused on the application of a variety of exclusive reactions at high momentum transfer, utilizing unpolarized and polarized beams and targets, to obtain information about nucleon ground state and excited state structure at short distances. This is a subject which is central to the programs of current accelerators and especially planned future facilities. The topics include: generalized parton distributions, deeply virtual Compton scattering, deeply virtual meson production (DVMP), transverse structure of hadrons (TMD), hadron form factors - elastic and transition, quantum chromodynamics (perturbative, non-perturbative, lattice calculations), and physics to study at an Electron Ion Collider.

Book First Observation of Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nucleus Scattering

Download or read book First Observation of Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nucleus Scattering written by Bjorn Scholz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the experimental work that finally led to a successful measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering—a process proposed forty-three years ago. The experiment was performed at the Spallation Neutron Source facility, sited at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Tennessee. Of all known particles, neutrinos distinguish themselves for being the hardest to detect, typically requiring large multi-ton devices for the job. The process measured here involves the difficult detection of very weak signals arising from nuclear recoils (tiny neutrino-induced “kicks” to atomic nuclei), but leads to a much larger probability of neutrino interaction when compared to all other known mechanisms. As a result of this, “neutrino technologies” using miniaturized detectors (the author's was handheld and weighed only 14 kg) become a possibility. A large community of researchers plans to continue studying this process, facilitating an exploration of fundamental neutrino properties that is presently beyond the sensitivity of other methods.
