Book excerpt: Research in the field of positive psychology has expanded knowledge about factors that contribute to well-being. Less attention has focused on the role of ethnic identity in youths reactions to environmental factors and perceived life experiences. This study examined the potential protective effect of ethnic identity in the relation between adolescents normative social stressors (family and peer) and a minority stressor (perceived discrimination) and life satisfaction. Data was collected via self-report measures from 417 adolescents (age range 14 to 18, 63.0% girls) at a public high school in the mid-south region of the United States. Moderation analyses were conducted in the PROCESS macro for SPSS to test three types of moderation models: single moderator, multiple moderator, and moderated moderation. Ethnic identity was the moderator in all models. Ethnicity was added as a second moderator in the last two models. Results showed that ethnic identity and ethnicity moderated the relation between peer stress and life satisfaction in one multiple moderator model. Conditional effect analyses revealed that the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction was significant and decreased across low, moderate, and high levels of ethnic identity for African Americans. For European Americans, the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction was significant and decreased at low and moderate levels of ethnic identity only. No significant moderation effects were found in the models with family stress and stress from perceived discrimination as predictors. The findings suggested that the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction differs between African American and European American adolescents, and ethnic identity demonstrates a protective effect in the context of peer stress for both African American and European American adolescents. Book excerpt: Key models of depression and anxiety across ethnic groups emphasize the role of ethnic identity (EI) as protective and perceived discrimination (PD) as a risk factor for psychopathology. Some research suggests EI may buffer, and other research suggests it may increase, the relation between PD, anxiety, and depression within minority samples. The current study examined the role of EI and PD on symptoms of depression/anxiety in African Americans, Latinx, and European Americans. We hypothesized: 1) Higher EI will predict lower depression and anxiety in African Americans and Latinx compared to European Americans; 2) Higher PD will predict higher depression and anxiety for African Americans and Latinx compared to European Americans; and 3) The relation between PD, anxiety, and depression will be moderated by EI in that high levels of ethnic identity will weaken the relations between PD, anxiety, and depression only for the minority groups. Participants (n= 331) were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk. EI predicted lower anxiety and depression in African Americans and PD predicted higher anxiety and depression across ethnic groups. EI moderated the relation between PD and anxiety for both African Americans and Latinx, but only predicted depression in African Americans. Future research should explore what variables contribute to EI increasing or buffering relations between discrimination and psychopathology with longitudinal methods to draw casual claims.

In addition to experiencing stress related to typical adolescent development, immigrant adolescents are exposed to immigration-related and acculturative stress, which can lead to compromised mental health (Takeuchi, Alegria, Jackson, & Williams, 2007). Unfortunately, immigrants as a group tend to underutilize mental health services due to a number of cultural and economic factors (Saechao et al., 2012). Schools offer an ideal setting for services that address immigrant student stress (Gonzalez, Eades, & Supple, 2014). Ethnic identity and school connectedness are two constructs that have been linked to positive psychosocial outcomes for immigrant and minority adolescents. In this study, I investigated the effectiveness of a school-based, short-term group counseling intervention for immigrant adolescents, consisting of five 60 minute sessions, that addressed acculturative stress and ethnic identity development in comparison to a nonintervention control group, based on measures of participants’ school connectedness, ethnic identity, and psychological adjustment (i.e., self-esteem and general distress). Additionally, I explored the role that an immigrant adolescent’s ethnic identity played in predicting psychological adjustment outcomes and in moderating intervention versus control group assignment. In total, 89 immigrant adolescents (44 in the intervention group and 35 in the nontreatment control group) from a variety of ethnic backgrounds at a single public high school in the Northeast participated in the study. One-way ANCOVA results indicated significantly better posttest measurements for both psychological adjustment measures (self-esteem and general distress) in the intervention group as compared to the control group, after adjusting for pretest measurements, however this was not the case for ethnic identity or school connectedness. A hierarchical multiple regression indicated that pretest ethnic identity was a significant predictor of higher posttest general distress, but that it did not significantly moderate the relationship between group assignment and posttest general distress. The results of this study suggest that the group counseling intervention is promising, particularly in terms of improving psychological adjustment above and beyond non-treatment. Further investigation regarding how counselors and educators can address and improve school connectedness is recommended. Ethnic identity appears to have important links to positive psychological adjustment, but it is a complex construct that may require more holistic and culturally-appropriate forms of measurement for immigrant adolescents. I have delineated the goals and strategies of the intervention so that they may inform future practice.

Ethnic identity is an important cultural variable that has been linked with positive mental health outcomes. The current study examined whether different aspects of ethnic identity moderated the relation between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms among 7th - 10th graders in an emerging Latino community in North Carolina. First, the study examined the main effects of acculturative stress and ethnic identity on depressive symptoms. As hypothesized, greater acculturative stress predicted greater depressive symptoms. Similarly, as hypothesized, lower public regard predicted greater depressive symptoms. In contrast, private regard/centrality did not significantly predict depressive symptoms. It was also hypothesized that ethnic private regard, public regard, and centrality would moderate the relationship between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms such that youth with high levels of ethnic identity would report lower depressive symptoms when confronting acculturative stress. The results of this current study did not support this moderation hypothesis. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that there would be a three-way interaction in which private regard would moderate the relationship between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms only when youth endorsed high levels of ethnic centrality. Due to the strong correlation between private regard and centrality, a three-way interaction analyses could not be performed. Book excerpt: Extant literature has provided evidence suggesting that ethnic minority individuals experiencing discrimination report poor mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and an overall lower sense of belongingness with the majority culture, but empirical research examining how ethnic identity affects this relationship is extremely scarce. The first goal of the current study was to replicate the results of previous studies demonstrating a strong relationship between discrimination and selected wellbeing indicators: meaning in life, American affirmation, depression, and life satisfaction. The second goal of the study was to examine a moderation model and two moderated moderation models that depict the relationships among adult attachment, the affective component of ethnic identity, exploration and commitment to ethnic identity, and wellbeing indicators. Data was collected from 206 students who were recruited from undergraduate psychology courses. Findings provided partial support to the direct effects of discrimination on various wellbeing indicators but did not support the moderating effect of ethnic identity. Additionally, adult attachment, ethnic identity, and discrimination were not found to significantly interact, but the relationship between discrimination, ethnic identity, and American affirmation was found to be significantly moderated by the affective component of ethnic identity. Discussion on the findings, limitations of the study, future research directions, and counseling implications are addressed.
