While many social factors may be associated with the increasing disparity of HIV infection among Black MSM, high levels of religiosity and spirituality prevalent in Black culture may be correlated with high risk behavior among Black MSM and may help explain this population's increasing incidence of HIV infection. Research supports a relationship between religiosity, spirituality, and high risk behavior among populations. Some research has suggested that religiosity and spirituality among Black MSM may be correlated but are multifaceted constructs. Conclusions suggest that among Black MSM these constructs account for certain levels of cognitive dissonance among Black MSM addressing their sexual and religious identity and can lead to negative coping behaviors and negative health outcomes (e.g., higher sexual risk, higher substance abuse, and higher levels of depression) among Black MSM. Findings also suggest positive spiritual and religious experiences may reduce the level of dissonance experienced by some Black MSM and may lead to positive health outcomes. Despite the unique role of religiosity and spirituality among Black MSM, research has not examined the relationships of these constructs and high sexual risk behavior among Black MSM. Future effective HIV prevention interventions intended for Black MSM may well include dissonance reduction, as well as, spirituality and religiosity components to achieve risk reduction interventions that may well decrease the continued HIV incidence among Black MSM.

Book excerpt: African Americans are disproportionately burdened by sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus in the US. The current study examined relationships between demographics, religiosity, ethnic identity, and sexual risk behaviors among 202 sexually active African American church-affiliated participants (mean age = 25; 69% female). Participants were fairly religious as evidenced by their reports of weekly engagement of scripture reading and daily engagement in thoughts of God and prayer. Participants spent quite a bit to a great deal of time utilizing positive religious coping and little to no time utilizing negative religious coping. In addition, participant's God control beliefs moderately influenced their choices related to engagement in sex. Participants reported moderate levels of ethnic identity exploration and commitment. On average, participants reported 10 lifetime sex partners and two within the past six months. Age was significantly predictive of lifetime sexual checklist factors (i.e., having sex while high on drugs or alcohol, being a victim of domestic violence, having sex with someone who has been in the correctional system) and previous six month and lifetime sex-only factors (i.e., number of sex partners, condom use). None of the primary study predictors (i.e., religious beliefs and behaviors, religious coping, God control beliefs, ethnic identity) were significantly associated with risky sexual behaviors.

David Hernandez is just one of the many individuals whose stories inform Soul Mates, which draws on both national surveys and in-depth interviews to paint a detailed portrait of the largely positive influence exercised by churches on relationships and marriage among African Americans and Latinos-and whites as well. Soul Mates shines a much-needed spotlight on the lives of strong and happy minority couples. Wilcox and Wolfinger find that both married and unmarried minority couples who attend church together are significantly more likely to enjoy happy relationships than black and Latino couples who do not regularly attend. They argue that churches serving these communities promote a code of decency encompassing hard work, temperance, and personal responsibility that benefits black and Latino families. Wilcox and Wolfinger provide a compelling look at faith and family life among blacks and Latinos. The book offers a wealth of critical insight into the effect of religion on minority relationships, as well as the unique economic and cultural challenges facing African American and Latino families in twenty-first-century America.

The current study examined relationships between demographics, religiosity, and sexual risk behaviors among 255 sexually active African American church-based participants (mean age = 43; 69% female). Participants were highly religious as evidenced by their report of daily prayer and thoughts of God and twice weekly church attendance and direct experiences with God. Most inconsistently used condoms (85%), and on average participants had seven sex partners in their lifetime. Gender, average monthly income, and medical insurance significantly predicted lifetime HIV-related risk factors (e.g., sex under the influence of substances, trading sex for drugs, homelessness, incarceration). Age and marital status significantly predicted lifetime sex-only behaviors (e.g., number of sex partners, condom use). Also, God consciousness (e.g., religious belief and prayer) significantly predicted sex-only behaviors. Overall, demographic variables were strong predictors of sexual risk behaviors.

Book excerpt: Community violence exposure comes in many forms—including direct exposure, indirect witnessing and hearing stories shared among the community. This dissertation is a study that raises questions about the level of exposure to community violence experienced—specifically, among low-income, urban, African American, adolescent males within the United States. Numerous stressors impact the lives African American males, especially those who are living in communities that have high levels of violence. Interventions provided in schools and in community agencies (e.g., recreational facilities) may provide some form of respite from community violence. However, gang activity, aggression, decreased academic performance and concerns with conduct are salient within African American sub-culture, despite best efforts within the community. The exploration of resilience factors that may moderate the impact of violence exposure on African American youth, has received far less research attention. Knowledge of factors that promote adaptation among Black, urban youth is necessary for the targeting of those at risk for negative behavioral and psychological sequelae as a result of their exposure to violence. Two, well-known components of African American culture and identity—spirituality and religiosity—have operated as individual and collective sources of refuge, purpose, forgiveness, hope, and liberation. As a result, a way to possibly address the epidemic of adolescent, African American exposure to community violence is through focused exploration of the role spirituality and religiosity could potentially serve in African American communities. To capture often-unheard thoughts and feelings of young, African American men and the unique challenges they face in their particular sociocultural environment, the study sampled seven, adolescent, African American males between the ages of 14 and 16 who were from a large, Midwestern city. The results supported the notion that African American, male adolescents frequently experience pervasive, negative exposure to violence within their communities, which can impact building and maintaining interpersonal relationships and personal self-efficacy. As a result, a sense of safety is a critically essential component required for change to occur in these communities. These findings do not intend to generalize across all adolescent, African American male experiences, but rather provide a richer understanding of the participant’s lived experienced.

Book excerpt: Abstract #2: Contemporary societal and media portrayals of Black masculinity and fatherhood often give a limited, or potentially negative view of manhood, and/or parenthood among Black males. Black American males are often represented and lauded as sports stars and rappers or marginalized as gangsters and deadbeat dads. The present study seeks to expand the paradigm of Black masculinity and fatherhood and provide a potentially positive, more expansive view of Black males in the success frame of religion and family life. In depth qualitative interview data was analyzed from a subsection of the American Families of Faith Dataset in involving 33 religious Black couples (N = 66) from different religious backgrounds (Muslim and Christian) across the United States. Major findings identified two psychological processes that seemed to suggest a religious and family-oriented success frame for defining masculinity and manliness. Participants described undergoing a process of personal spiritual growth and maturity in which individuals left behind the “street life” mentality, in favor of becoming a “Godly man.” This process was positively connected with the process of religious or spiritual masculine-identity transformation in which manhood was defined in terms of being relational with God and family, rather than the “bachelor mindset” or “single life” which suggested a relationally isolated view of masculinity. Implications, applications, limitations, and future directions for research were also discussed.

The participant will be a Black male who identifies as heterosexual and has been infected with HIV through sexual contact with another male. An in-depth, semi-structured interview will be the method of data collection. A qualitative data analysis based on a case study paradigm will be conducted.

Very few such efforts pay serious attention to the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. But many teenagers are very involved in religion. Surveys reveal that 35% attend religious services weekly and another 15% attend at least monthly. 60% say that religious faith is important in their lives. 40% report that they pray daily. 25% say that they have been "born again." Teenagers feel good about the congregations they belong to. Some say that faith provides them with guidance and resources for knowing how to live well. What is going on in the religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers? What do they actually believe? What religious practices do they engage in? Do they expect to remain loyal to the faith of their parents? Or are they abandoning traditional religious institutions in search of a new, more authentic "spirituality"? This book attempts to answer these and related questions as definitively as possible. It reports the findings of The National Study of Youth and Religion, the largest and most detailed such study ever undertaken. The NYSR conducted a nationwide telephone survey of teens and significant caregivers, as well as nearly 300 in-depth face-to-face interviews with a sample of the population that was surveyed. The results show that religion and spirituality are indeed very significant in the lives of many American teenagers. Among many other discoveries, they find that teenagers are far more influenced by the religious beliefs and practices of their parents and caregivers than commonly thought. They refute the conventional wisdom that teens are "spiritual but not religious." And they confirm that greater religiosity is significantly associated with more positive adolescent life outcomes. This eagerly-awaited volume not only provides an unprecedented understanding of adolescent religion and spirituality but, because teenagers serve as bellwethers for possible future trends, it affords an important and distinctive window through which to observe and assess the current state and future direction of American religion as a whole.
