A combination of these two factors will indicate the extent how far inclusive education is being implemented in the classrooms. The school that was selected to participate in this study is located in the semi-rural area in Pinetown district. Learners participated in three focus group sessions. These sessions aimed at gathering data on learners' experiences within classroom environment. Each group consisted of eight learners; that is, four males and four females. Focus group one was selected from grade seven; the second focus group from grade eight and the third group from grade nine. The class teachers of the selected classes were requested to take part in the interview sessions. The sessions intended to gather information on teachers' views about classroom environment and how it impacts on their implementation of Inclusive education.

Book excerpt: Inclusive education in public schools is intended for all students, regardless of their ability, race, documentation status, or gender. Although laws and policies have shifted to ensure that children are allowed a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment, teachers do not always have the adequate training to accommodate their students' needs, resulting in low teacher morale. Additionally, there is a teacher shortage crisis (Darling-Hammond, 2010) which has led to declining enrollment in teacher preparation programs causing local education agencies to be unable to fill certain positions (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017). To mitigate this phenomenon, this qualitative study explored how a teacher preparation program collaborated with local school district to empower veteran teachers to work with beginning teachers. The present study unravels the complexities associated with inclusive education and mentorship. Taking the Inclusive Bioecological Model (Anderson, Boyle, & Deppeler, 2014) into account, an Expanded Inclusive Bioecological Model was developed to better understand the contextual factors that could potentially influence teachers' ability to meet the needs of all their students. Various data, including interviews, focus groups, and a survey, were collected in an earlier phase and were analyzed. The findings highlight how the macrosystem impacts the proximal processes between people, power, the context, and time. The lessons from this iteration of the project could serve as a conceptualization of what veteran teachers need and would like to successfully implement inclusive evidence-based practices. School districts and universities should continue to look at ways to collaborate and provide ongoing support for teachers at various phases of their careers. This project was an example of the positive impact that partnerships could have teachers' perceptions about collaborating and revisiting their own praxis.

In response to international and national mandates requiring its implementation, educators everywhere are engaged in the daily task of providing educational services within inclusive general education classroom settings. It is expected that inclusion in the United States will become more prevalent in American classrooms over the next ten years due to progressively more stringent federal and state mandates. In order for inclusion to result in adequate yearly progress for all student subgroups, it is imperative that it be properly implemented. Research has established that a critical component for proper implementation is an understanding of baseline attitudes in regard to inclusive education held by educators. The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes of pre-K-12 general and special education teachers, school site administrators, school psychologists, paraprofessionals, physical and occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, certified non-teaching, school office staff and special education office staff in a medium-sized school district in southern Arizona. This study examines attitudes held by educators, their foundations of knowledge, attitudes, perceptions and opinions that shape their attitudes; and potential recommendations for implementation strategies that are predicted to be successful by these educators.

Book excerpt: Inclusion is not merely a placement; it is a human right. This qualitative study examined the organizational structures and systems that support the development and sustained implementation of inclusive practices within a large urban school district that has prioritized the transformation from a siloed approach to educating students with disabilities to an inclusive approach. The study also explored how successful implementation of inclusive practices is measured and professional habits and behaviors of teachers who are doing the work to build inclusive classrooms. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with eight classroom teachers and four district level administrators. In addition data from document analysis of annual Inclusion Action Plans submitted by the schools where the teachers interviewed were from was used to inform answers to the research questions. Once data were collected, the researcher transcribed the interviews and conducted three rounds of coding. Key findings show four elements of school culture and organization systems that support successful implementation of inclusive practice and a metric currently being used by a district to measure success. Further, the study identifies four professional habits and behaviors of teachers who believe in inclusion and are working to implement inclusive practices. This study suggests inclusion be a part of preservice teacher training for all teachers, including district internship programs, and that professional development around inclusion be context specific. It also recommends districts and schools examine the structural division between general and special education as a way to disrupt broken systems and provide better supports for all students.

The Act states that schools have a duty to educate children with disabilities in general education classrooms. All children with disabilities should be educated with non-disabled children at their own age and have access to the general education curriculum. The philosophy of inclusive education aims at helping all children learn in regular classrooms. Children learn at their own pace and style within a nurturing learning environment because schools are important places for children to develop friendships and learn social skills. Children with and without disabilities learn together and from each other in inclusive classes. On the other hand, when children attend classes that reflect the similarities and differences of people in the real world, they learn to appreciate diversity. The aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of teachers about implementation of inclusive education in elementary schools. In order to collect data for this study, a questionnaire which consisted of eight open-ended questions was developed and administered to 66 elementary school teachers. The teachers worked at primary schools and taught 1-5 grades. They were asked to write their opinions and experiences about the implementation of inclusive education in the elementary schools. Primary school teachers generally have a positive attitude about inclusive education and its philosophical and psychological foundation. However, they express that they encounter some difficulties in implementing inclusive classrooms. A crowded classroom is a main obstacle to obtain desired objectives in educational activities. The levels of students' disability are related to effectiveness of classroom management. The effectiveness of inclusive education depends on not only the teachers' quality but also the school administrators'. Some superintendents assess the effectiveness of teachers in inclusive and regular classrooms in the same way. It can assist educators in developing a better understanding of inclusive education as an ongoing process and may serve to underscore the deep social and religious commitment as well as the resources required on the part of the educators, students, and parents to help inclusive education evolve into a meaningful societal tool.

What constitutes the term “inclusion” itself and how ideas derived from the different perspectives on inclusion impact school leadership practice point to a highly contested field of enquiry. Originally embedded in discourse relating to special education, ideas relating to inclusion are attracting much broader appeal within system reforms in many jurisdictions. This book seeks to keep the consideration of inclusion firmly in its broader context and to decouple it from the discourse relating to students with special educational/additional needs. This allows the authors to position their contributions more explicitly within discourses that draw on difference and diversity as unavoidable features of schools. Within this collection we address the current political dogmas in many countries that take a purely rational, managerial approach to leadership, arguing that this is not contributing to inclusion in schools. In doing this, the book seeks to shape current discourses on leadership by exploring perspectives which are likely to enhance our understanding of inclusion.
