Book excerpt: This quasi-experimental research study first analyzed the use of audience response systems (ARS) in a high-school mathematics class and provided data regarding the impact of ARS on student achievement. Secondly, the study broke down the achievement gains in the treatment group by gender. The two questions the study sought to answer were, "Does the use of ARS increase student academic achievement in a high-school mathematics class?" and, "Do male and female students perform differently when using ARS in a high-school mathematics class?" The analysis of the data found that there was a statistically significant difference in the academic achievements of the class that used ARS and the class that was taught in a more traditional manner. No statistical difference in academic achievement was found, however, between the males and the females in the treatment group.

Book excerpt: There is a current push for students to reach higher levels of achievement in mathematics in order to compete in today's technologically changing world-a push that is being led by the Common Core Standards Initiative (CCSI) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The issue with this new push, however, is that most students are disinterested in mathematics, resulting in them choosing to not participate in class. Active participation is a form of behavioral engagement that can lead to cognitive engagement and higher achievement. To improve participation, the expectancy-value theory suggests that the perceived benefit of participation needs to be increased while the cost reduced. Electronic audience response systems (EARS) have the potential to accomplish this, and they have begun to be implemented at the college level with primarily positive results. The purpose of this study is to examine if EARS can similarly improve student participation and achievement in the secondary geometry classroom. Using a quasi- experimental design, this study compared students' participation using hand raising versus EARS devices in the classroom and found that student participation increased significantly when using EARS. To look at achievement, a treatment and comparison group design was used, and despite that no statistically significant difference was found, the results do support EARS' potential to improve achievement. Lastly, this study looked at student and teacher perceptions of using the EARS in the classroom, and found mixed results.

Book excerpt: The objective of this quasi-experimental quantitative study was to determine if the use of a student response system, combined with an interactive whiteboard, led to increased student achievement in mathematics within a fifth grade classroom as measured by a district benchmark assessment and the annual Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) Test. The study was founded on the understanding that students in the United States were lagging further and further behind their international peers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. One potential way to motivate students in these areas was to adhere to the constructivist approach to learning and to involve students in the construction of their own knowledge. Although very little research has been conducted combining interactive whiteboards and student response systems in elementary classrooms to measure their effectiveness related to student achievement, this combination may be what is needed to address how to raise student academic scores while engaging digital native students in the process. In this study, student scores from a district benchmark assessment served as the baseline measure of mathematical proficiency. The AIMS Test served as the outcome measure of mathematics achievement in the study. An analysis of covariance was conducted and it demonstrated a significant difference, based on a significance level of .05, between the treatment and the control groups, with F = 6.83 and p = .01. It was therefore determined that the use of a student response system positively affected student achievement in mathematics.

Book excerpt: Audience response systems, student response technology, or simply "clickers" are products designed for teachers to efficiently collect multiple-choice answers from numerous students simultaneously. In large lecture halls, class response systems enable interaction where it previously would not have been feasible. In the classroom, response systems facilitate a shift from the teacher calling on 1 student to the teacher receiving responses from every student. Studies have found mixed results ranging from class response systems improving students' academic performance through the course of a unit to the occasional case of detrimental effects on students' grades compared with control groups without class response systems. These studies have explored the use of class response systems in a variety of academic subjects, comparing varying demographics including gender and varying student needs including students with anxiety or shyness. This study measured the effect of using class response systems in a secondary science classroom for 1 unit to explore whether or not the use of class response systems would have a measurable impact on students' gain scores between the pretest and the posttest for that unit. The results based on comparison of gain scores between experimental and control groups indicate that the use of class response systems does not demonstrate an effect on student learning.
