Book Exploring the Feasibility of Teacher Professional Development for Positive Youth Development

Download or read book Exploring the Feasibility of Teacher Professional Development for Positive Youth Development written by Daekyun Oh and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is little wonder that there is national consensus on the necessity for school physical education to facilitate holistic development of all learners. Moreover, given the increased mental health issues that K-12 students are facing, it is important to consider a strengths-based approach to physical education that focuses on the holistic development. Positive youth development (PYD) is such a strengths-based approach but there is limited evidence of its utility in K-12 physical education. PYD aligns with the adventure-based learning (ABL) pedagogical model in physical education, which focuses on developing the personal and social skills of students. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the use of a virtual professional development workshop on teachers’ knowledge and understanding of ABL and PYD and their perception of using ABL to foster PYD. A qualitative case study design was adopted as a methodological approach. Five in-service physical education teachers were selected as key informants. Data were gathered through individual interviews, focus group interview, videotaping and field notes, researcher’s memos, and participants’ written journals. Data were analyzed using inductive analysis. The findings of this study indicated that the virtual professional development workshop was helpful in supporting teachers’ learning and understanding of ABL and PYD, and their perception of using ABL to foster PYD. Specifically, the teachers understood ABL as a useful strategy, particularly as a good starter of a new academic year. They also perceived that, using the ABL model, it was feasible to foster PYD within physical education settings. Given the teachers’ learning about ABL and PYD, it was determined that the content of the virtual professional development workshop was effectively delivered to the teachers. Four specific factors were highlighted as important for the effectiveness of the workshop: (a) uniqueness of the professional development activities, (b) providing useful resources ahead of time, (c) hands-on experience, and (d) alignment with teachers’ philosophy of teaching. Based on their learning in the virtual professional development workshop, the participants perceived that teaching ABL to foster PYD in their physical education program was possible. At the same time, they felt that they needed to modify the ABL lessons to their specific teaching context. The participants also perceived that the ABL activities would be beneficial to their students' social and emotional competencies, interpersonal development, and sense of enjoyment of physical education. Based on the findings, I provided implications for in-service teacher professional development, K-12 physical education, and physical education teacher education programs. Then, recommendations for future research were given along with the limitations of the current study.

Book Toward Positive Youth Development

Download or read book Toward Positive Youth Development written by Marybeth Shinn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social settings have enormous power to promote or hinder positive youth development. Researchers and practitioners know a great deal about features of schools and programs for youth that affect development, but much less about how to transform settings to bring about these desirable features. This book shows how to harness the power of settings. It shifts the debate from simply enhancing youth outcomes at the individual level to improving the settings of youths' daily lives. The book offers researchers and practitioners blueprints for creating and changing influential settings including classrooms, schools, universities, out-of-school time programs, ethnic systems of supplementary education, and other community-based programs. Leading scholars in psychology, education, human development, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, and public policy discuss a wide array of social change strategies, and describe how to measure key features of settings as a target and guide for change. The authors also demonstrate how larger social structures - such as school districts, community coalitions, community data resources - can support change. Many of the chapters describe ways to make settings work for all youth, including those marginalized by reason of race, ethnicity, social class, or sexual orientation. Toward Positive Youth Development will guide researchers, educators, administrators and policy makers to improve schools and youth programs for all of America's youth.

Book Enhancing Professional Development for Teachers

Download or read book Enhancing Professional Development for Teachers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers, like other professionals, need to stay informed about new knowledge and technologies. Yet many express dissatisfaction with the professional development opportunities made available to them in schools and insist that the most effective development programs they have experienced have been self-initiated. Enhancing Professional Development for Teachers explores how the provision of professional development through online media has had a significant influence on the professional lives of an increasing number of teachers. Growing numbers of educators contend that online teacher professional development (OTPD) has the potential to enhance and even transform teachers' effectiveness in their classrooms and over the course of their careers. They also acknowledge that it raises many challenging questions regarding costs, equity, access to technology, quality of materials, and other issues. Enhancing Professional Development for Teachers suggests that teachers be active participants in planning and implementation of any new technologies that enhance professional development. The book recommends that federal and state policy makers take on the responsibility of promoting equal access to technology while the federal government and foundations play an important role by supporting the development, evaluation, and revision of OTPD.

Book Exploring the Relationship Between Professional Development and Student Achievement

Download or read book Exploring the Relationship Between Professional Development and Student Achievement written by Tamora LaShawn Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between professional development and student achievement by addressing three major standards of professional learning: content, process, and context. This study included 276 teachers from 28 middle schools. Data from this study was gathered using the Standards Assessment Inventory (SAI) survey instrument designed by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL) and publicly available achievement data from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP), a criterion-referenced achievement test. The Standards Assessment Inventory (SAI) was used to examine teachers' perceptions of professional development at the school level. The overall purpose of this study was to collect, analyze, and use existing data to answer the following research question: Based on the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) professional learning standards, is there a positive correlation between teachers' perception of professional development at a school-based level and student achievement? The following sub-questions guided this research: (1) Is there a relationship between the "context" of school-level professional development based on the NSDC standards and student achievement in mathematics and reading/language, as measured by TCAP scores? (2) Is there a relationship between the "process" of school-level professional development based on the NSDC standards and student achievement in mathematics and reading/language, as measured by TCAP scores? (3) Is there a relationship between the "content" of school-level professional development based on the NSDC standards and student achievement in mathematics and reading/language, as measured by TCAP scores?Data for this research was analyzed using statistical computational methods. The results from the data analysis determined that there were several positive significant relationships between the National Staff Development Council standards of professional learning and student achievement.

Book Exploring Meanings of Professional Development

Download or read book Exploring Meanings of Professional Development written by Elizabeth Baker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe the perceptions of elementary teachers about professional development experiences in a Catholic diocese in the Midwest. Professional development in this study was defined as local or contextual experiences, regional experiences, diocesan experiences, and other events of learning such as graduate level coursework, workshops, or conferences. The study noted teacher perceptions of how and why professional development decisions are determined so that teacher growth and actions can be enhanced by their professional development experiences. A within-case and cross-case analysis of eight individual case studies of elementary classroom teachers, each with over ten years of experience teaching in a Catholic diocese in the Midwest, was used to investigate the subsequent research questions. The overarching research question was: How do teachers perceive their professional development experiences? The sub-questions used for the systematic research process included: (a) What professional development experiences do teachers perceive as meaningful and useful?, (b) What professional development decisions by leaders do teachers perceive as useful and meaningful in promoting high levels of academic achievement for all learners?, (c) How can leaders reframe professional development decision making to sustain teacher growth as perceived by teachers?, and (d) How can leaders reframe professional development decision making to sustain social justice towards teachers? Through analysis of narratives, focus group sessions, and interviews, two dominant themes of relevancy and practicality were determined. The subthemes of professionalism, disconnect, technology, and attributes of teachers were also determined. The data from this study found that teachers perceive that professional development experiences on the local level are positive when relationships between the administrator and the teachers are positive. Beyond the local, professional development experiences may or may not be relevant or practical because teachers are not asked about their contextual needs. Teachers perceived that asking, listening, and trusting their opinion concerning professional development experiences was important in reframing relevant and practical experiences

Book excerpt: This fascinating and vital book seeks to challenge the effectiveness of current practices in professional development by urging educators to rethink professional learning for teachers and teaching assistants. Throughout, teachers describe significant professional learning and growth, often through dynamic partnerships with others, that allows them to inspire imaginative possibilities; different and creative ways to ignite hope and opportunity for children. Four key themes guide the reader through the collection of chapters: professional capital, learning communities, teachers as researchers and subject-specific professional development. They explore: The types of professional development approaches that support teachers to make meaningful changes within their practices. The conditions and school cultures that are needed for teachers to meaningfully prosper from professional development. The impact that unintended consequences of system accountability drivers and funding have on teachers' experiences of professional development. The ways in which the development of curriculum and pedagogy can be integrated with models of professional development, particular in the creative arts. Packed with innovative ideas and practical suggestions and co-written by researchers and practitioners, this book highlights the importance of using research evidence to develop teachers' practice within the realities of their own classrooms and schools. Book Professional Development Schools

Download or read book Professional Development Schools written by Ismat Abdal-Haqq and published by Corwin. This book was released on 1998 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional Development Schools offers a close-up, comprehensive look at the state of professional development schools in the United States today. The vision of an ideal professional development school (PDS) is drawn from the best-known P-12 practices and optimum sites for preparing novice teachers. This "ideal" PDS would continually generate, test, and refine new knowledge and organizational structures. Abdal-Haqq poses the following questions regarding whether the PDS is performing its intended role: Is the PDS improving the curriculum, instruction, and structure of P-12 schools through professional development of educators? and Is it making substantive, positive differences in students' learning levels? To find answers, the author examines substantial amounts of evidence from various sources: student interviews and follow-up studies with teacher education graduates; surveys with preservice teachers on attitudes, beliefs, and self-efficacy; and reviews in student journals. Abdal-Haqq also investigates the important questions of time and money. She explores the kinds of additional fiscal and human resources necessary to start up and sustain a PDS.
