Book Exploring the Community Cultural Wealth of Black Medical Students Who A Completed Post Baccalaureate Study Prior to Admissions

Download or read book Exploring the Community Cultural Wealth of Black Medical Students Who A Completed Post Baccalaureate Study Prior to Admissions written by Anna-Kay Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black students' overall admittance rate to medical school has remained consistent over the last 40 years and continues to lag behind that of other racial/ethnic groups (Association of American Medical Colleges [AAMC], 2021b). The persistent inequities in K-12 and higher education systems and historical exclusion of Blacks from medical education have impacted many aspiring Black doctors' abilities to matriculate without enrolling in post-baccalaureate programs, which adds time and cost. The purpose of this narrative study was to explore the stories of Black medical students who completed a post-baccalaureate program to improve their profile to gain admittance to medical school. The researcher sought to understand Black students' perception of their community cultural wealth (aspirational capital, familial capital, social capital, navigational capital, resistant capital, and linguistic capital; Yosso, 2005), including if/how community cultural wealth was employed to navigate their transitions to the dominant institutional structures of medical school, as well as the development of their professional identity. The overarching question that guided this study was: What stories do Black medical students who completed a post-baccalaureate premedical program tell about their capital and professional identity formation in medical school? Three sub-questions guided the study: (a) How do Black medical students who attended a post-baccalaureate program describe their need for the post-baccalaureate premedical program? (b) How do Black medical students who attended a post-baccalaureate premedical program describe their capital in medical school? (c)How do Black medical students who attended a post-baccalaureate premedical program describe their professional identity formation? The researcher conducted interviews and administered a demographic survey to seven participants. The major themes included the process of becoming, the evolution of self, and the weight of being Black in medicine. The study's findings, results, interpretation, and conclusions led to the development of three categories of recommendations. The first recommendation for practice is in the form of structure redesigned for the AAMC to improve equity based on the systemic issues within the education system. The second recommendation offers programmatic suggestions for institutions with linkage post-baccalaureate programs. The third is the recommendation for future research on post-baccalaureate programs. Collectively, these recommendations will improve the experience of Black students who attend post-baccalaureate programs and equity among all students, especially those who attend predominantly White institutions. Keywords: Black medical students, post-baccalaureate programs, community cultural wealth, social capital, narrative study.

Book excerpt: National data reveals that college access is most challenging for traditionally underrepresented students, including minoritized, first-generation college attendees and students from low-income families (Gibbons & Borders, 2010). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how Black first-generation college students (FGCS) from African or Caribbean immigrant families capitalized on Yosso's (2005) community cultural wealth (CCW) to create and pursue college goals and aspirations. Participants were recent graduates from a suburban school district outside of the metropolitan area on the east coast and who were enrolled in their first or second year in college. The researcher answered the main research question, how does community cultural wealth within the communities of Black FGCS influence successful college ambitions? Data for this phenomenological study was sourced from semi-structured individual interviews and focus groups conducted via synchronous or asynchronous, participants' reflective journal prompt, and field notes. Data analysis employed coding and memoing to identify interrelating topics and subtopics guided by the research questions and CCW. The current study serves as a catalyst for educational advocates and policymakers to (a) reconceptualize cultural wealth/capital for Black FGCS as a strength-based perspective of empowering their college ambitions, (b) inspire commitment among educators to increase college access and retention for Black FGCS from immigrant families, and (c) eradicate the habit of perpetuating the deficit-based perception about FGCS and their ability to remain in the P-20 academic pipeline.

Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this book explores the 'lived culture' of urban black students in a community college located in a large northeastern city in the United States. The author immersed herself in the institution she was studying for a full academic year, exploring both the direct experiences of education, and the way these experiences were worked over and through the praxis of cultural discourse. She examines in detail the messages of the school, including the 'hidden curriculum' and faculty perspectives, as well as the way these messages are transformed at a cultural level. The resulting work provides a major contribution to a number of debates on education and cultural and economic reproduction, as well as a leap forward in our understanding of the role schooling plays in the re-creation of race and class antagonisms. This work will be of great interest to anyone working with minorities, particularly in the context of education.

Book excerpt: The lack of diversity among current licensed physicians is mirrored in the race/ethnicity of current medical students across the nation. In 2017-2018, there were a total of 89,904 medical students enrolled in U.S. medical schools, with 7% of those medical students who identified as African American (AAMC, 2019). This narrative qualitative study examined the lived experiences of three African American pre-medical and three African American medical students to understand their challenges and supports while pursuing a medical degree. Through semi-structured interviews, the study explored the academic, professional and social experiences that influenced their persistence from undergraduate through medical school completion. This study employed Critical Race Theory (CRT) to identify and address how racism, oppression, and power impact the lives of these African American students. Findings of the research indicated that African American underrepresented minorities in medicine experienced similar encounters of racism and oppression at the "Three Levels of Racism" (Jones, 2000), institutional racism, personally mediated racism and internalized racism, throughout their journey to become a doctor. Recommendations to disrupt all forms of racism, allowing students to gain a sense of belonging and academic persistence are related to increasing the African American physician workforce to increase URM mentorship; academic, social and mental health wrap around services; financial support; institutional leaders committed to equity and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles; and creating meaningful URM pipeline programs starting at the elementary school level

Book Salsa Soul and Spirit

Download or read book Salsa Soul and Spirit written by Juana Bordas and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapping the potential of the changing workforce, consumer base, and citizenry requires a leadership approach that resonates with our country's growing diversity. In "Salsa, Soul, and Spirit," Juana Bordas shows how incorporating Latino, African American, and American Indian approaches to leadership into the mainstream has the potential to strengthen leadership practices and inspire today's ethnically rich workforce. Bordas identifies eight core leadership principles common to all three cultures, principles deeply rooted in each culture's values and developed under the most trying conditions. Using a lively blend of personal reflections, interviews, and historical background, she shows how these principles developed and illustrates the creative ways they've been put into practice in these communities (and some forward-looking companies). Bordas brings these principles together into a multicultural leadership model that offers a more flexible and inclusive way to lead and a new vision of the role of the leader in the organization. Multicultural leadership resonates with many cultures and encourages diverse people to actively engage. In a globalized economy, success for leaders in the future will rest on their ability to shift to a multicultural approach. "Salsa, Soul, and Spirit" provides conceptual and practical guidelines for beginning that process.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book Hispanic Serving Institutions

Download or read book Hispanic Serving Institutions written by Anne-Marie Nunez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the increasing numbers of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and their importance in serving students who have historically been underserved in higher education, limited research has addressed the meaning of the growth of these institutions and its implications for higher education. Hispanic-Serving Institutions fills a critical gap in understanding the organizational behavior of institutions that serve large numbers of low-income, first-generation, and Latina/o students. Leading scholars on HSIs contribute chapters to this volume, exploring a wide array of topics, data sources, conceptual frameworks, and methodologies to examine HSIs’ institutional environments and organizational behavior. This cutting-edge volume explores how institutions can better serve their students and illustrates HSIs’ changing organizational dynamics, potentials, and contributions to American higher education.
