Book Exploring Student Experiences of Faith Development Through Intercollegiate Athletic Participation

Download or read book Exploring Student Experiences of Faith Development Through Intercollegiate Athletic Participation written by Tim Sceggel and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have devoted considerable attention to the issues of spirituality and higher education in recent decades. Three primary areas of literature in this research included faith development, faith and college students, and faith and athletics. This topic fills a gap in the research literature as faith development in Christian college athletics is an under-researched topic. However, the spiritual growth of students has been shown to facilitate numerous benefits for both the individual and the institution. The literature in this field suggests that practitioners should consider employing theories of faith and spiritual development in their work. This study used Fowler's faith development theory as a framework for implementing the Student-Athlete Christian Faith Interview Guide (SACFIG). The SACFIG contextualized students' responses regarding their experiences as student athletes at a private, faith based NCAA Division III institution in Georgia. As such, this study was designed to explore the experience of faith development through athletic participation among 20 student athletes. This study utilized a qualitative approach. Twenty-five respondents were recruited and participated in semi-structured interviews, followed by five focus groups. The data collected throughout the interviews were analyzed and coded to develop a thematic structure of the findings. Four themes emerged from this study including individual relationships that student athletes have developed which deeply influence their own faith, specific individual experiences that led to the deepening of faith, the identity formation process for student athletes that led to faith development, and the institutional prioritization and integration of faith on campus which positively impacted the faith development of student athletes.

Book Value and Contribution of the Participation in Intercollegiate Athletics on the Personal Development of Community College aged Students

Download or read book Value and Contribution of the Participation in Intercollegiate Athletics on the Personal Development of Community College aged Students written by Michele Gill and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to better understand the value of the extracurricular experience for college students. Gaining insight into the variety of opportunities for student personal development as a result of participation in intercollegiate athletics and extracurricular activities during college is explored by this study. Quality student engagement activities and understanding the reasons for engagement contributing to personal development continues to be valuable information in development of student on campus programming at colleges and universities. This qualitative study takes a phenomenological approach to describe the experiences of students involved in intercollegiate athletics competition at a small rural serving community college in the Midwest. Through a series of semi-structured interviews of at least (n = 14), students tell their stories of personal development and the contributions that intercollegiate athletics made to their out-of-class experiences. Findings of this study indicate that the participants valued their experiences in participating in intercollegiate athletics, reporting the development of personal pride and a greater sense of self-identity. For the participants in this study, intercollegiate athletics provided an opportunity for increased student engagement and thus contributed to the overall campus environment.

Book Athletics and Faith

Download or read book Athletics and Faith written by Griffin O. Gardner and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between athletic involvement and spiritual development. Historically, athletics has been examined as an outlet of spirituality, but previous studies have not examined spirituality as a product of athletic involvement. The following question guided this study: "To what extent, if any, does college athletic involvement impact spiritual development?" This study took a longitudinal quantitative approach, leveraging archival survey data to conduct a means comparison study of the responses to particular survey items for athletic and non-athletic students. Though no statistical significance existed between the results of the two populations, the study still offers key implications for future research and practice. Implications for practice for the examined institution include making cautious assumptions about student athletes, understanding that athletics does not negatively impact spiritual development, and affirming that athletic recruitment abides by institutional standards and does not recruit exceptional students to general admissions standards. Implications for future research include conducting additional archival studies on student athletes to better understand their experience at the institution, grouping future research on athletics by institutional type, and further examining the role of the coach in shaping the student athlete experience.

Book Impact of Intercollegiate Athletic Participation on Leadership Development

Download or read book Impact of Intercollegiate Athletic Participation on Leadership Development written by Clint Simpson Huntrods and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of athletic participation in intercollegiate athletics on leadership development using a multi-institutional, longitudinal sample of students at four year colleges and universities. Using Astin's Input, Environment, Outcomes model (1991), I examined whether athletic participation influenced leadership development using the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS) and its eight independent subscales while controlling for students' background characteristics and institutional characteristics. Using pre-test and post-test data from the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education (WNS), the findings suggest that participation in certain types of athletics can inhibit leadership growth. This study contributes to the literature by breaking utilizing a longitudinal model, study athletes compared to non-athletes and breaking down athletes into categories based upon team and individual sports as well as by the level of contact in their respective sports. Finally, this study has implications for higher education policy, including practical applications for those involved in undergraduate education including coaches, administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

Book Religion and College Athletics

Download or read book Religion and College Athletics written by Matthew W. Seitz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has examined the role of religious well-being in workplace outcomes and in higher education. However, no study has previously investigated the perceptions of student-athletes on their avenues for religious growth and well-being during their careers in intercollegiate athletics and how their religious well-being influenced athletic, academic, and social outcomes. This sample includes seven Christian, former student-athletes from a major, Division-1 athletic program in the South. Participants were interviewed and themes were identified. Results suggest that participants' religious well-being was closely connected to athletic, academic, and social outcomes. Participants had no expectations for athletic departments with regard to their religious well-being, but the administration still indirectly created a positive culture towards the expression of religion. Future research should look at workplace religiosity and how studies in this area relate to religious well-being and outcomes in college sport. Legal implications associated with religion in public institutions are discussed and warrant further research.

Book The Role of a Residential Learning Community in the Faith Development of Catholic College Students

Download or read book The Role of a Residential Learning Community in the Faith Development of Catholic College Students written by Michael J. Stang and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The college years are a transformative period for undergraduate students, especially in their spiritual development. Fowler (1981) initially proposed the stages of faith model, and Parks (1986) clarified the unique faith journey experience of college students. There are many aspects in the lives of college students that influence faith development. Residence halls have long been known as having a great impact on student learning and development (Astin, 1993; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). This study examined college student spiritual development by exploring the impact of a residential learning community on the faith development of Catholic college students. This qualitative study examined the impact of a living-learning community situated in a private residence hall at a public university on the experiences of thirteen college students. Data was gathered using a series of three individual interviews with each participant. Data were then analyzed through a thematic coding process. Defining terms was an important introduction to this study. Participants described spirituality as an individual, personal relationship with God and religion as an organized community following a common set of principles and beliefs. Participants viewed faith as the way to put their belief into practice, to make meaning of their actions. Several environmental factors within the residential community emerged as impacting the faith development of college students including opportunities for invitation, peer mentoring, faith development programming, discernment support, and preparation for faith life after college. Participants also described several factors that influenced their decision to live within the residential community including the facility and amenities, the dining program, and the Catholic nature of the living community. From these findings, several recommendations for student affairs educators were suggested to enhance practices on campus in order to empower spiritual conversations and development. Suggestions for future research also emerged from this study's results.

Book A Comparative Study of Student Engagement Based on Intercollegiate Athletics Participation

Download or read book A Comparative Study of Student Engagement Based on Intercollegiate Athletics Participation written by David Woolever and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of retention in higher education institutions is certainly a hot topic. Institutions have explored first year seminars, engagement with faculty and creating a culture of connectivity and belongingness among the student population to include extra-curricular activities in creating an engaged student that will persist until graduation. Furthermore, academic engagement among student-athletes is one topic that has that has been somewhat neglected while institutions look at ways to increase retention via creating a culture of involvement. In addition, the Student Engagement Instrument (SEI), initially designed to measure engagement among secondary students has rarely been utilized to examine academic engagement among students at the collegiate level (Grier-Reed, Appleton, Rodriguez, Ganuza & Reschly, 2012). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects that athletics participation has on the academic engagement of students as measured by the SEI. Drawing upon Albert Bandura’s (1977, 2001) social learning theory, Astin’s (1999) theory of involvement, the self-determination theory (SDT) and Tinto’s (1975) student integration model, the study explored the relationship between participation in sports and academic engagement. This research is geared toward higher education exploring persistence and retention as well as exploring further use of the SEI on a college population. Conclusions can be drawn to address retention issues plaguing universities and colleges.

Book Involvement

Download or read book Involvement written by Alec DeVries and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to discover why students remain enrolled at an institution after departing from their athletic team. This study was conducted at small private, faith-based liberal arts institutions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Forty respondents participated in a quantitative analysis inquiring about their experiences and satisfaction into their persistence at their institution of enrollment. Findings include the lack of support 'inactive athletes' received during their athletic experience, as well as the high value participants placed on their academic experience. Implications for future practice include, a continuous emphasis on student development and academic affairs programs, support for other extra-curricular activities, and development of assessment procedures for coaches
