Book excerpt: African Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV, and males make up most of the cases by gender. Innovative methods for addressing the gap in the HIV epidemic are needed. Barbershops have been identified as one locale to address health disparities among African American males. Few studies have used barbershops as sites to provide HIV prevention information. Though barbershops have been sites for a few urban-based HIV prevention programs for African American men, none have been inclusive of rural men and only one was conducted in the southern United States. The purpose of this study was to explore the risky sexual behaviors of African American men in Alabama, and assess their readiness for a barbershop-based HIV prevention program. The study was guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior. A paper-and-pencil survey was administered to adult African American males at three barbershops in Alabama. The results of this study suggested that over half the men in the study did not consistently use condoms in the preceding three months. About one-fourth of the men reported having multiple sexual partners, and over half of all sexually active men used drugs and/or alcohol during a sexual encounter in the last three months. Attitudes were a significant predictor of having multiple sexual partners. Overall, the men were moderately ready for a barbershop-based HIV prevention program. Neither engagement in risky sexual behaviors nor the antecedents to engagement in risky sexual behaviors were predictive of readiness for barbershop-based HIV prevention programs. The findings of the study provide valuable insight to stakeholders who are interested in reducing the spread of HIV among African American men. Improving attitudes toward condoms in the barbershop setting may lead to less frequent engagement in risky sexual behaviors, which could curb the HIV acquisition rate among African American males.

This thesis research project aims to add to the literature by examining the factors that influence HIV sexual risk among older adults and the prevention programs that exist to address the problem among adults and older adults. This thesis research project is guided by the following research questions: 1) what factors are associated with HIV sexual risk among individuals aged 50 and over? and 2) what effect do individual-level programs, in comparison to group-level and multi-level programs, have on HIV sexual risk among adults and older adults? The results indicated that risky sexual behaviors among older adults were correlated with substance abuse, relationship factors that involved partner-related risk and self-silencing behaviors, mental health, low HIV risk perceptions, and lack of HIV knowledge. Additionally, the literature revealed that prevention program types, such as: motivational interviewing, behavioral skills-training, counseling, HIV/AIDS education, and condom skills-training were effective in increasing condom-use and condom-negotiation skills among adults and older adults.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This study compared the perceived threat of HIV/AIDS and explored the sexual risky behaviors between men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual males. Participants were asked to complete a 33 question survey which included 22 Likert-type scale questions developed to measure the perceived threat of HIV/AIDS, 8 dichotomous questions designed to measure sexual risk behavior and 3 demographic variables; age, sexual orientation and race. The case group consisted of 52 MSM and the control group consisted of 96 heterosexual males. No statistical significant diffrence was found among sexual risky behaviors. Findings from this study indicate that HIV/AIDS prevention efforts should continue to address sexual behavior practices of MSM. Increased sexual risky behavioral practices could lead to higher STD and HIV incidence and prevalence rates.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1997, Aids and Adolescents provided an insight into a wide range of adolescent issues which were rarely compiled in one volume at the time. Much of the HIV epidemic response had been at the individual level in the hope that this narrow focus would provide the key to containment and resolution of spread. However, over the ten years since the epidemic had taken hold, it was clear that paradigms were limited, input was uncritical and large cohorts were overlooked. In this text a series of contributions have been compiled to explore adolescent issues ranging from sexual behaviour and health education campaigns to HIV prevention and HIV/AIDS care. The chapters begin by giving an overview of adolescent problems, such as homelessness, pregnancy and gender, and explore why these problems are so often overlooked. We then move on to an examination of the facts and fictions associated with adolescent risk, challenging some of the basic current notions underpinning approaches to the subject at the time. Also included are particular focused studies of Australian adolescents’ beliefs about HIV and STDs and also the American adolescents’ perceptions of drug injection. Finally, the volume gives a focused view of those with HIV infection, with a review of findings of the time, neuropsychological and psychological factors. This overview provided some comments on merging issues and future directions. Today it can be read in its historical context.
