Book excerpt: Mental health outcomes, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in police have become more of a concern for law enforcement administrators, peers, family and friends. Using culture as a theoretical framework, the current cross-sectional, convergent mixed methods study explored the relationship between personal cumulative exposure to different types of critical incidents and likelihood of reporting PTSD symptoms in a sample of officers (n=71) from one municipal police department. This study also examined how personal cumulative exposure to different types of critical incidents and likelihood of reporting symptoms of PTSD may be moderated by the degree of perception of social support from friends and family. Finally, the study included a qualitative analysis of how police culture influences barriers to officers receiving mental health services. Regression models supported a significant positive relationship between cumulative exposure to various types of critical incidents experienced personally by the officer and the likelihood of reporting symptoms of PTSD. Results also showed a direct significant inverse relationship between perception of social support from family and friends and self-reported symptoms of PTSD. Social support did not moderate the relationship between personal cumulative exposure to various types of critical incidents and the likelihood of reporting symptoms of PTSD. A separate thematic analysis of officers (n=54) revealed that the culture of machismo (occupational and self) influenced officers’ perception of receiving mental health services. This study highlights the need for close attention to the effects of cumulative exposure to trauma in officers and the need to advocate for strong interpersonal relationships outside of policing. Other policy implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Traumatic exposure is a frequently-occurring facet of policing, yet relatively little research has been done on posttraumatic outcomes in Canadian federal and municipal officers. Given that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in police populations represents a significant health concern and economic burden, clarifying risk and resilience factors for posttraumatic adversity or resilience would inform screening, training, assessment, and treatment for Canadian police. The current dissertation presents cross-sectional, mixed-methods data investigating the relationship between psychosocial variables (i.e., anxiety sensitivity, intolerance of uncertainty, childhood adversity, personality, work disengagement, hope, optimism, perceived social support) and trauma-related outcomes (i.e., PTSD, posttraumatic growth, anxiety, depression) in a sample of 500 RCMP and municipal officers deployed in Saskatchewan. Written feedback from a subset of the sample was analyzed using qualitative thematic network analysis to triangulate the quantitative findings. Within the sample, 25% of RCMP officers and 12% of municipal officers met criteria for probable PTSD. Mean comparisons with external samples indicated the RCMP participants reported greater PTSD severity than undergraduate or community samples, whereas the municipal participants reported lower or equivalent severity relative to undergraduate and community samples. These deaths and the subsequent public outcry have led to various constituents questioning the legitimacy of the police. The book incorporates real stories of police officers and case studies of select police organizations. A look inside a number of these departments has identified an equal concern for incivility within the workplace in the form of gender and ethnic harassment and discrimination. The costs of workplace incivility can be significant as workplace victims are not only likely to decrease their work effort, quality of work, and their level of commitment to the organization, they are also likely to mistreat others in the workplace and to take their frustrations out on those they serve. While these costs have a significant impact for police organizations, incivility by police officers against members of the public can have a much greater impact in terms of eroding perceptions of police legitimacy. This book takes a unique approach in providing a model for police organizations to pursue in becoming more inclusive.
