Book excerpt: To Connect. To Feel. To Empathize. Weather patterns are changing. Deforestation is accelerating climate change. This sorry state of affairs has extended to the oceans as well. Overfishing and rampant dumping is seriously endangering the marine ecosystem. There has never been a more urgent need to re-engage with nature. We have been away from nature for far too long and what was once an interdependent relationship, has now become a one-way street. Where we have just been taking and not giving back in the same measure. The premise of this book is to reawaken the ‘kindred spirit’ feeling with nature. It believes that when we go back to nature, we will be able to get the relationship going. The book is written as a collection of adventures, memories and thrilling encounters with wildlife over 40 years of trails and treks of the Wilson College Nature Club in biodiversity across India. The pages chronicle amazing creatures, plants, herbs, animals, birds and everything that makes nature so fascinating. It is the voice of a nature lover keen to get people off their couches and screens to experience nature at their own pace. It is meant to rekindle the desire to go out there and give Mother Nature much needed TLC.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Flow and one of the pioneers of the scientific study of happiness, an indispensable guide to living your best life. What makes a good life? Is it money? An important job? Leisure time? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi believes our obsessive focus on such measures has led us astray. Work fills our days with anxiety and pressure, so that during our free time, we tend to live in boredom, absorbed by our screens. What are we missing? To answer this question, Csikszentmihalyi studied thousands of people, and he found the key. People are happiest when they challenge themselves with tasks that demand a high degree of skill and commitment, and which are undertaken for their own sake. Instead of scrolling on your phone, play the piano. Take a routine chore and figure out how to do it better, faster, more efficiently. In short, learn the hidden power of complete engagement, a psychological state the author calls flow. Though they appear simple, the lessons in Finding Flow are life-changing.

Book Good Business

Download or read book Good Business written by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi published the groundbreaking Flow more than a decade ago, world leaders such as Tony Blair and former President Clinton, and influential sports figures like Super Bowl champion coach Jimmy Johnson have all been inspired by the book. In today's corporate upheaval, a new business paradigm is evolving. While many CEOs are being exposed for their greed, truly visionary leaders believe in a goal that benefits themselves as well as others. They realize that it is their vision and "soul" that attract loyal employees willing to go above and beyond the call of corporate duty. And their employees are realizing the same thing: while 80 percent of adults claim they'd work even if they didn't have to, the majority of them can hardly wait to leave their jobs and get home. Good Business starts with the premise that this is an age in which business and work have replaced religion and politics as central forces in contemporary life. The book reveals how business leaders, managers, and even employees can find their "flow" and contribute not only to their own happiness, but also to a just and evolving society. It identifies the factors crucial to the operation of a good business: trust, the commitment to fostering the personal growth of employees, and the dedication to creating a product that helps mankind. Good Business is sure to become a must-read text for anyone who values the positive contributions of individuals in the changing world of business.

Book Basketball

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Naismith
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 1996-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803283701
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Basketball written by James Naismith and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men's Christian Association Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and felt discouraged because calisthenics and gymnastics didn't engage his students. What was needed was an indoor wintertime game that combined recreation and competition. One evening he worked out the fundamentals of a game that would quickly catch on. Two peach half-bushel baskets gave the name to the brand new sport in late 1891. Basketball: Its Origin and Development was written by the inventor himself, who was inspired purely by the joy of play. Naismith, born in northern Ontario in 1861, gave up the ministry to preach clean living through sport. He describes Duck on the Rock, a game from his Canadian childhood, the creative reasoning behind his basket game, the eventual refinement of rules and development of equipment, the spread of amateur and professional teams throughout the world, and the growth of women's basketball (at first banned to male spectators because the players wore bloomers). Naismith lived long enough to see basketball included in the Olympics in 1936. Three years later he died, after nearly forty years as head of the physical education department at the University of Kansas. This book, originally published in 1941, carries a new introduction by William J. Baker, a professor of history at the University of Maine, Orono. He is the author of Jesse Owens: An American Life and Sports in the Western World.

Book Futurist spaceflight meditations

Download or read book Futurist spaceflight meditations written by Giulio Prisco and published by Giulio Prisco. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We must strenuously push toward our cosmic destiny among the stars. Beginning to expand beyond the Earth before it’s too late is our most important task at this moment in history. Many actors have important roles to play, and there’s room for everyone. Spaceflight will also help find viable solutions for current developmental, environmental, and social problems. But the road to the stars is full of impediments and roadblocks. We will not advance as fast as we wish. Therefore we must keep our mood strenuous and our drive strong. We need an optimistic spaceflight culture oriented to the future, with energizing visions of interplanetary, interstellar, and cosmic futures. We also need a futurist space philosophy.

Book The Philosophy of MetaReality

Download or read book The Philosophy of MetaReality written by Roy Bhaskar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2012. The Philosophy of MetaReality: creativity, love and freedom is the third of three books elaborating Roy Bhaskar’s philosophy of metaReality, which appeared in rapid succession in 2002. A big, rich book teaming with ideas, The Philosophy of MetaReality is undoubtedly the magnum opus of Bhaskar’s spiritual turn. Building on a radical new analysis of the self, human agency and society, Roy Bhaskar shows how the world of alienation and crisis we currently inhabit is sustained by the ground-state qualities of intelligence, creativity, love, a capacity for right-action and a potential for human self-realisation or fulfilment. A new introduction to this edition by Mervyn Hartwig, founding editor of Journal of Critical Realism and editor of A Dictionary of Critical Realism (Routledge, 2007), describes the context, significance and impact of the philosophy of metaReality, and supplies an expert guide to its content. This book is essential reading for students and practitioners of both philosophy and the human sciences.
