Book excerpt: Boundary objects have been shown to play an important role in sharing knowledge in and across firms. However, little research has examined whether boundary objects can facilitate emergence of common knowledge across national cultural boundaries. This paper studies the specific role of boundary objects in sharing complex design knowledge across national cultural boundaries in an engineering design project network involving 1,428 design review interactions among U.S. and Indian engineers. It analyzes 67 instances of boundary object-mediated negotiation. This negotiation is referred to as design-centered negotiation. The paper shows how using different types of boundary objects, including 3-D models, design drawings, specification documents, play a central role in negotiating and sharing complex design knowledge across the national cultural boundary. It includes a quantitative analysis of all participant and object interactions, specific boundary objects, and the role of boundary objects in negotiating complex design knowledge. A propositional theoretical model of boundary object-mediated negotiation in global design project networks is introduced. This model explains how the use of boundary objects in global project networks may facilitate negotiations by participating individuals involved in resolution of design issue. Furthermore, this model may serve to enhance coordination and collaboration in global project networks where design-centered negotiations are common.

Book excerpt: Advances in electronic communication tools have enabled collaborative engineering work to be conducted in virtual project networks that utilize "digital boundary objects" to exchange complex design knowledge. However, little is known about whether and how digital boundary objects facilitate negotiations in virtual settings that feature real-time communication. This paper addresses this gap by exploring the role of digital boundary objects in negotiating complex design knowledge in a three-dimensional (3-D) virtual workspace. It examines the interactions of eight student teams with two members from each participating university forming eight project networks. A theoretical sampling approach was used. The authors found that digital boundary objects facilitate negotiations through a three-stage process of structuring negotiation space, structuring knowledge in the structured negotiation space, and framing combinations of structured knowledge. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: Data was collected from three different global project networks: 1) two project networks collaborating face-to-face, one was comprised of Indians and Americans, the other was identical but also contained an Indian national who had studied and worked in the U.S.; 2) an experimental setting comparing multi-cultural, cultural-boundary spanned and mono-cultural project networks; and 3) three days of design review meetings within a project network of U.S. and Indian engineers. Firstly, network analysis and grounded theory are applied in order to observe the emergence and role of cultural boundary spanners. In the second, quantitative statistical analysis is applied in order to observe the impact of cultural boundary spanners on performance. Finally in the third, network analysis and grounded theory is used to observe the role of boundary objects in negotiating knowledge. The findings have significant implications in improving the effectiveness of global project network collaborations.
