Book Teacher Identity and the Struggle for Recognition

Download or read book Teacher Identity and the Struggle for Recognition written by Patrick M. Jenlink and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher identity is shaped by recognition or its absence, often by misrecognition of others. Recognition as a teacher, or the strong and complex identification with one’s professional culture and community, is necessary for a positive sense of self. Increasingly, teachers are entering educational settings where difference connotes not equal, better/worse, or having more/less power over resources. Differences between discourses of identity are braided at many points with a discourse of racism, both interpersonal and structural. Teacher Identity and the Struggle for Recognition examines the nature of identity and recognition as social, cultural, and political constructs. In particular, the contributing authors to the book present discussions of the professional work necessary in teacher preparation programs concerned with preparing teachers for the complexities of teaching in schools that mirror an increasingly diverse society. Importantly, the authors illuminate many of the often problematic structures of schooling and the cultural politics that work to define one’s identity – drawing into specific relief the nature of the struggle for recognition that all face who choose to entering teaching as a profession.

Book Descriptive Study Exploring Faculty s Perceptions when Transitioning to a New Learning Management System

Download or read book Descriptive Study Exploring Faculty s Perceptions when Transitioning to a New Learning Management System written by Veronica Outlaw and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examined faculty who taught online at a large southeastern research university and who were involved in the learning management system transition from eLearning Vista to Blackboard Learn in 2012-2013. The study sought to determine the efficiency of the three units involved in the study: the Faculty Resource Center, the College of Continuing Studies, and the Home Departments. The researcher explored faculty's perceptions of the (a) level of awareness of the actual transition and available support services and resources, (b) level of participation in the support services and resources, and (c) level of helpfulness of the support services and resources. The researcher developed a five-point Likert scale questionnaire (Outlaw's Perception of LMS Transition Survey), which acquired validation from a panel of experts from other institutions who experienced a similar situation. Findings indicated that there was no statistical difference in faculty's level of awareness of the available support services and resources compared to their teaching locations, no statistical difference in faculty's level of participation in the available support services and resources compared to their grouped academic teaching rank, and no statistical difference in faculty's level of participation in the available support services and resources compared to their employment teaching status. Findings also showed there was a small negative correlation between the perceived level of stress and perceived level of technological self-efficacy while transitioning to the new learning management system. Lastly, the perceived level of participation while transitioning to a new learning management system did not affect the participants' levels of stress. It is hoped that the findings in this study will improve best practices when introducing emerging technologies to effectively enhance pedagogy and acclimate faculty to the changes, thus reducing stress and frustration and increasing preparedness. The findings could drive recommendations for implementing a new model for transitioning to change. Such efficient methods could better equip faculty to deal with the stresses of change to emerging technologies. In addition, the recommendations for the new model could furnish training professionals with quality services that increase faculty preparedness, while reducing stress.

Book excerpt: Despite significant investment in computer-based learning in higher education, there is a dearth of current research on administrative strategies for its effective use. Drawing from a national survey of higher education institutions and interviews with administrators, this book addresses key issues of distance learning: Why are higher education institutions pursuing such ventures? How are administration and management practices affected by these motivations? How should universities address the difficult administrative questions raised by distance learning? Despite significant investment in computer-based learning in higher education, there is a dearth of current research on administrative strategies for its effective use. Drawing from a national survey of higher education institutions and interviews with administrators, this book addresses key issues of distance learning: Why are higher education institutions pursuing such ventures? How are administration and management practices affected by these motivations? How should universities address the difficult administrative questions raised by distance learning? This book explores explicit motivations, focusing on access and a belief in the pedagogical advantages of this approach to higher education. The survey reveals that top university and continuing education administrators are more than twice as likely to lead the implementation push than individual faculty. The study also found that the core of distance learning is administratively housed in self-supporting continuing education units, and that the majority of respondents pay full-time faculty under a regular load arrangement for these courses--with no additional stipend for course development. Controversial findings involving issues of intellectual property and the different attitudes of community colleges and doctoral degree-granting institutions toward distance learning are also covered.

Book Handbook of Research on Inclusive Development for Remote Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Inclusive Development for Remote Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education written by Dailey-Hebert, Amber and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the number of adjunct faculty teaching online courses remotely for their institutions continues to increase, so do the unique challenges they face, including issues of distance and isolation as well as problems pertaining to motivation, time, and compensation. Not only are these higher education faculty geographically isolated from each other and their colleagues at flagship campuses, but they also lack adequate institutional support and resources necessary to perform their roles. As institutions continue to rely heavily on this group of under-supported and undertrained instructors who teach the majority of online courses offered across the country, institutions need models and strategies to tap the expertise and perspectives of this group not only to improve teaching and learning in online programs but also to retain this critical talent pool. More consideration is needed to create institutional affinity and organizational commitment, build community, and create opportunities for remote adjunct faculty to be included as an integral component to their academic departments. The Handbook of Research on Inclusive Development for Remote Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education is a comprehensive reference work that presents research, theoretical frameworks, instructor perspectives, and program models that highlight effective strategies, innovative approaches, and unique considerations for creating professional development opportunities for remote adjunct faculty teaching online. This book provides concrete practices that foster inclusivity among contingent faculty teaching online as well as tangible practices that have been successfully implemented from faculty developers and academic leaders at institutions who have a large population of, and heavy reliance on, remote adjunct instructors. While addressing topics that include faculty engagement, mentoring programs, and instructor resources, this book intends to support remote instructors in the post-pandemic world. It is also beneficial for faculty development professionals; academic administrative leaders; higher education stakeholders; and higher education faculty, researchers, and students.
