Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermediate Algebra offers a practical approach to the study of intermediate algebra concepts, consistent with the needs of today's student. The authors help students to develop a solid understanding of functions by revisiting key topics related to functions throughout the text. They put special emphasis on the worked examples in each section, treating them as the primary means of instruction, since students rely so heavily on examples to complete assignments. The applications (both within the examples and exercises) are also uniquely designed so that students have an experience that is more true to life--students must read information as it appears in headline news sources and extract only the relevant information needed to solve a stated problem. The unique pedagogy in the text focuses on promoting better study habits and critical thinking skills along with orienting students to think and reason mathematically. Through Intermediate Algebra, students will not only be better prepared for future math courses, they will be better prepared to solve problems and answer questions they encounter in their own lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal 0 false false false The Sullivan/Struve/Mazzarella Algebra program is designed to motivate students to "do the math"-- at home or in the lab--through a full suite of resources that support a variety of learning environments. Instructors can choose the ideal combination of resources for their students: The text is known for its two-column example format that provides annotations to the left of the algebra. These annotations explain what the authors are about to do in each step (instead of what was just done), just as an instructor would do. Two MyMathLab(R) course options are now available: a standard course and a Ready to Go course. The Ready to Go option provides premade assignments for every section of the text. NEW! The Video Notebook is an unbound, three-hole punched workbook/note-taking guide that asks students to write down important definitions and procedures and work through key examples as they watch the "Author in Action" videos.

Book Exploring Introductory and Intermediate Algebra

Download or read book Exploring Introductory and Intermediate Algebra written by Richard N. Aufmann and published by Houghton Mifflin College Division. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for a one- or two-semester combined elementary and intermediate algebra course, Exploring Introductory and Intermediate Algebra: A Graphing Approach is designed to assist students in making connections between mathematics and its applications. Its goal is to develop a student's mathematical skills through appropriate use of applications and to use technology to establish links between abstract mathematical concepts and visual or concrete representations. The proven Aufmann Interactive Method (AIM) ensures that students try concepts and manipulate real-life data as they progress through the material. Every objective contains one or more sets of matched-pair examples encouraging students to interact with the text. The first example in each set is completely worked out; the second example, called 'You Try It,' prompts students to practice concepts at the time they are presented in the text. Complete worked-out solutions to these examples in an appendix at the end of the book help students by providing immediate feedback, concept reinforcement, and identification of mistakes to prevent frustration. Technology is integrated throughout the text to assist students in making connections between abstract mathematical concepts and a concrete representation provided by technology. Calculator Notes throughout offer tips on using the graphing calculator. Eduspace, powered by Blackboard, for the Aufmann/Lockwood/Boswell Exploring Introductory and Intermediate Algebra course features algorithmic exercises and test bank content in question pools.

Most colleges offering elementary and intermediate algebra use two different texts, one for each course. As a result, students may be required to purchase two texts; this can result in a considerable amount of topic overlap. Over the last few years, several publishers have issued "combined" texts that take chapters from two texts and merge them into a single book. This has allowed students to purchase a single text, but it has done little to reduce the overlap. The goal of this author team has been to produce a text that was more than a combined text. They wanted to unify the topics and themes of beginning and intermediate algebra in a fluid, non-repetitive text. We also wanted to produce a text that will prepare students from different mathematical backgrounds for college algebra. We believe we have accomplished our goals. For students entering directly from an arithmetic or pre-algebra course, this is a text that contains all of the material needed to prepare for college algebra. It can be offered in two quarters or in two semesters. The new Review Chapter found between chapters 6 and 7 serves as a mid-book review for students preparing to take a final exam that covers the first seven chapters. Finally, we have produced a text that will accommodate those students placing into the second term of a two-term sequence. Here is where the Review Chapter is most valuable. It gives the students an opportunity to check that they have all of the background required to begin in Chapter 7. If the students struggle with any of the material in the Review Chapter, they are referred to the appropriate section for further review.
