If the translator s understanding of a narrative from the narrator s point of view is erroneous, then the whole process of translating the message into another language may also fall into error. This poses Bible translators a difficult challenge: How can we understand the narrator s point of view of the biblical stories which are culturally, geographically, and historically remote from our own? Understanding a text from the narrator s point of view must precede the translation process. In this work Hankore presents an argument for the intended utterance of Genesis 28:10 35:15 before proposing in brief how to translate it. By following this process, Hankore shows that a correct understanding of the concept of the ancient Israelite vow in the framework of a social institution is fundamental to reading and translating Genesis 28:10 35:15, and goes on to show how this same votive framework assist an explanation of the relevance of Genesis 34 to the Jacob story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is an exploration of comprehensive school reform efforts in 68 high schools across the country over a three-year period. Each of these 68 schools was a member of the High Schools That Work (HSTW) network. Half of the schools received comprehensive school reform (CSR) grant monies to pay for intensive consultant services and training. Those schools receiving the CSR funds were able to provide extensive external support from the HSTW model developer. The schools that did not receive CSR funds are referred to as non-CSR schools. The HSTW student survey and assessment data in the areas of reading, mathematics, and science were analyzed to determine the level of implementation of the HSTW model based on six indices developed by the model developer. These six indices included high expectations, literacy, HSTW -recommended curriculum, integration, work-based learning, and timely guidance and are measured by student responses. These six indices were used to develop directional hypotheses that stated CSR (grant recipient) schools would have the higher levels of implementation 2004 for the six indices. Findings show that, in fact, non-CSR schools had more deeply implemented the model than CSR schools. However, CSR sites had higher increases between 2002-2004 for each of the six factors, partially supporting the directional hypotheses. The results indicate that external coaching and contracted services provided by the model developer can give low-performing schools the support they need to implement the HSTW model and increase student achievement.
