Book Exploring Awareness of Learning and Development Among Graduate Student Affairs Professionals

Download or read book Exploring Awareness of Learning and Development Among Graduate Student Affairs Professionals written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student affairs practitioners begin their professional experience through graduate assistantships, which, in conjunction with their classroom learning, prepare them to meet many entry-level competencies needed to succeed in student affairs. There is a tremendous amount of learning derived from graduate assistantships, and it may be beneficial for graduate student affairs professionals to become aware of the moments when they are learning. Doing so may help them understand how they learn and how they make connections between their academic and on-the-job learning for their future practice. Research around the utilization of metacognitive strategies such as reflection and emotional regulation in professional practice has found that participants foster a deeper understanding of their experiences and are able to recognize their learning more readily. In order to understand how to cultivate metacognition into professional practice, a deeper understanding of the environments and contexts of graduate student learning in professional practice is needed. This study explored awareness of learning among student affairs professionals in graduate assistantships, examining the interactions and environments that facilitated awareness of learning, how participants described their learning, how they became aware of their learning, and the emotions they associated with their learning. A case study approach explored the experiences of nine participants who were enrolled in their first year of a graduate program in higher education and student affairs. Qualitative data was collected through a focus group, reflective journaling practice, researcher observations, and a document analysis. Findings from this research demonstrate connections between learning moments and the emotions experienced by graduate student affairs professionals during those moments, as well as the role that reflective practice had in regulating emotions. Data also emphasized the role that the supervisor-supervisee relationship plays in learning consciousness and emotional regulation, and how motivation and resilience influence emotional regulation, learning connections, and self-authorship within the profession of student affairs. The findings of this study provide several implications for practice such as integrating emotional regulation and reflective practices into professional development, intentionally creating strong supervisorv supervisee relationships, and establishing graduate assistantship seminar courses in graduate preparatory programs in the field of student affairs.

Book Professional Learning in Student Affairs Graduate Preparation

Download or read book Professional Learning in Student Affairs Graduate Preparation written by Graham F. Hunter and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student affairs work requires the complex interplay of specialized knowledge and skills within a rapidly changing context. Although the profession has increasingly relied on graduate training programs to provide new practitioners with foundation in these knowledge and skills, perennial concerns arise regarding the preparation and effectiveness of recent graduates. Whereas previous literature has examined graduate preparation as a socialization process, by which individuals adjust to new organizational contexts and construct professional identity, I center the learning that occurs within and between coursework and fieldwork contexts. Specifically, I wanted to explore how learning was distributed across and mediated by multiple learning environments; the tools students accessed, used, and adapted during their graduate training; and the tensions within and across learning environments that spurred student transformation. In order to answer these questions, I conducted a qualitative case study and activity system analysis of four students enrolled in the Student Affairs Preparation (SAP) program (pseudonym), a Master's-level graduate training program at Brady University (pseudonym). I conducted semi-structured interviews with each of the participants during the fall and spring semesters of their second year in the SAP program. These conversations focused on students' learning and experiences in coursework contexts, in fieldwork contexts, and between these two environments. Participants also provided supplemental written materials (e.g., reflection papers, course assignments) that demonstrated their learning throughout their graduate training.Analysis of the data revealed that, although learning occurred in both fieldwork and coursework contexts, students' experiences in fieldwork greatly mediated how they responded to and made meaning of content from their coursework. Indeed, students used their fieldwork experiences and messages from their fieldwork supervisors to determine the nature of student affairs work and, consequently, the utility of particular knowledge and skills for doing that work. Students sought out, used, and adapted those tools-conceptual and material-immediately applicable to their current work or the work they envisioned doing after graduation. Additionally, students spoke to a variety of tensions within and across learning environments requiring them to think differently about the nature of their own professional practice or the nature of the student affairs profession.

Nettles and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative thesis explored the experiences of self-identified Master-level graduate students who worked four or more years in higher education before enrolling into a student affairs graduate program. The researcher utilized a sample of six semi-structured student interviews along with a review of relevant literature. The data analysis yielded five themes. The themes that emerged from the data played a role in determining how participants navigated the graduate school experience. The themes are: (a) motivation for returning to graduate school, (b) academia, (c) professional development opportunities, (d) relationships, and (e) cost associated with the program. This study contributes to the understanding of adult learners and their internal and external experience in graduate school. The author suggests ways in which student affairs graduate programs can adapt and improve support for the adult learner population and raises questions about the current curriculum and delivery of services to adult learners.

Book Reshaping Graduate Education Through Innovation and Experiential Learning

Download or read book Reshaping Graduate Education Through Innovation and Experiential Learning written by Jenkins, Toby S. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions on the importance and impact of pedagogical practice on students as whole persons are often concentrated on the P-12 or undergraduate learning experience. In higher education, many institutions do an outstanding job of complicating the undergraduate classroom to include civic engagement, community-based learning, education abroad, social action, and project-based learning. But, what about the graduate classroom? While there are indeed numerous graduate programs that push students to interact with strong, meaningful, difficult, and sometimes harsh facts, scholarship, and ideologies, the instructional methods have largely remained stagnant. New methods of constructing deep and meaningful learning in graduate education is essential for the transformation and continued evolution of graduate school instruction. Reshaping Graduate Education Through Innovation and Experiential Learning is a crucial reference book that offers practice-based reflections on efforts to infuse creativity, social action, engaged learning, or other creative interventions into the graduate classroom. The book includes personal narratives that are grounded in pedagogical perspectives from graduate school instructors who share their experiences with innovative and transformative teaching practices. The goal of the book is to encourage graduate school professors to engage social justice education as something to be experienced and practiced in their courses and not just as a concept to be studied. As such, the book covers topics such as self-directed learning, counseling, and community mapping. It is ideal for graduate-level instructors in the field of education and other related social science areas, as well as junior faculty as they establish a teaching practice or veteran faculty seeking creative transformation.

Book Graduate Attributes in Higher Education

Download or read book Graduate Attributes in Higher Education written by Carey Normand and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate Attributes in Higher Education illuminates the value of graduate attributes for students, graduates and lecturers in higher education. A coherent, intelligent, subtle and important enhancement to the field, this text guides readers through a theoretical and historical analysis of graduate attributes, using interdisciplinary and interprofessional lenses. This unique approach offers pertinent coverage of a wider range of graduate attributes than one usually sees, generating multiple perspectives and discourses that have implications for both theory and practice. Through an open and exploratory analysis, this text asks questions such as the following: • Are programmes of study which claim ‘postgraduate’ attributes providing something further, deeper or enhanced in comparison, or just more of the same? • Should we be developing continuing professional development attributes for our professional learning programmes of study, or are attributes of this nature established at the undergraduate level? • How can we embed graduate attributes in curricula in a wide range of subject discipline-specific and interdisciplinary ways? • In a culture of lifelong learning and a cross-disciplinary changing global market, are attributes simply a starting point – a launch pad for future and ongoing development required for a world of increasing complexity? Clearly structured and offering a mix of case study and theoretical frameworks to explore each GA, practical guidance is offered at the end of each chapter on how to embed the relevant graduate attribute whilst providing well-researched theoretical underpinning. The varied methods applied and methodological attitudes espoused will prove inclusive to a wide range of readers. Bringing together analysis of specific case studies from a wide range of professional and discipline-specific contexts, Graduate Attributes in Higher Education will be a valuable text for educators and professionals focused on curriculum development and professional learning.
