Download or read book Working animals in agriculture and transport written by R.A. Pearson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers many of the recent research observations on the management and use of working animals in tropical agricultural systems. Studies of oxen, donkeys and camels in sub-Saharan Africa, cows and donkeys in Ethiopia, buffaloes in Vietnam, camels in Libya and horses and donkeys in Southern Italy are some of the topics included. Technical issues in nutritional requirement, feeding, management, health, implement, work practices and harnessing are discussed and the contribution that working animals continue to make in many agricultural and transport activities are quantified. The book is a valuable source of reference materials on draught animal technology. It is a must for any scientist, student or extension worker in rural and urban areas where animal power is found.
Download or read book Frontier Livelihoods written by Sarah Turner and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do ethnic minorities have the power to alter the course of their fortune when living within a socialist state? In Frontier Livelihoods, the authors focus their study on the Hmong - known in China as the Miao - in the Sino-Vietnamese borderlands, contending that individuals and households create livelihoods about which governments often know little. The product of wide-ranging research over many years, Frontier Livelihoods bridges the traditional divide between studies of China and peninsular Southeast Asia by examining the agency, dynamics, and resilience of livelihoods adopted by Hmong communities in Vietnam and in China’s Yunnan Province. It covers the reactions to state modernization projects among this ethnic group in two separate national jurisdictions and contributes to a growing body of literature on cross-border relationships between ethnic minorities in the borderlands of China and its neighbors and in Southeast Asia more broadly.
Download or read book Vulnerability of Agriculture Water and Fisheries to Climate Change written by Mohamed Behnassi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human activity is changing the global environment at an unprecedented rate while humanity faces a range of complex and interrelated challenges to local, regional and global development, human security and politics. Food security ranks high on the science, policy and development agendas. However, most research linking global change and food systems examines the impact of climate change on agricultural production, or the impact of agriculture on land use, pollution and biodiversity, overlooking interactions with other aspects of the food system – such as food processing, packaging, transportation and consumption and employment derived from these activities. This book demonstrates that new threats to food security which arise from environmental change require more than simply a focus on agricultural practices – what is needed is an integrated food system approach. The authors point out that the process of adapting food systems to global environmental change is not simply a search for technological solutions to increase agricultural yields. Tradeoffs across multiple scales among food system outcomes are a prevalent feature of globalized food systems. Within food systems, there are key underexplored areas that are both sensitive to environmental change and crucial to understanding its implications for food security and adaptation strategies. The authors assert that technical prescriptions alone will not efficiently manage the food security challenge. This book is their contribution to a new paradigm, which addresses food systems holistically by engaging researchers in multiple disciplines to understand the causes and drivers of vulnerability.
