Book excerpt: Dependence on a team of robots to carry out the exploration missions has many benefits such as speeding up the missions; provided that the coordination among robots is maintained. Many circumstances limit the communication which is crucial for the coordination among robots (e.g. impenetrable barriers, high temperature etc.). A periodic rendezvous strategy is considered in this dissertation a work-around in order to overlap communication ranges of the robots. Attending these periodic rendezvous sessions requires that the robots interrupt their current exploration progress periodically and traverse back to the rendezvous points (i.e. Interruptibility). During their trips to these points, they do not gain new knowledge since they cross already explored parts of the area. Therefore, using rendezvous strategies improves the team behaviour but has a negative impact on the time efficiency. Serendipity Rendezvous – the contribution of this dissertation - invests the dedicated time of Interruptibility trip in the inter-coordination among the robots by finding a serendipity path. This path is where the robot, which runs Serendipity Rendezvous, meets its colleagues accidentally on its way to the rendezvous point. The evaluation results show that Serendipity Rendezvous is able to mitigate the negative impact of Interruptibility while maintaining its positive impacts. Moreover, it provides a balance utilization of robots for the exploration activities. These results are achieved without affecting the already scheduled rendezvous. Hence, Serendipity Rendezvous optimizes periodic rendezvous sessions as long as the margin of the gaining knowledge by meeting other robots on the serendipity path is considered rewarded for the robots which run Serendipity Rendezvous.

The Eighth Scienti?c Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (Sociedad Espanol ̃ a de Astronom ́ a, SEA), held in Santander in July 7–11 2008, whose p- ceedings are in your hands, clearly shows the enthusiasm, motivation and quality of the present Spanish astronomical community. The event brought together 322 participants, who represent almost 50% of Spanish professional astronomers. This percentage, together with the continuously increasing, with respect to previous SEA meetings, number of oral presentations and poster contributions (179 and 127 respectively), con?rms that the SEA conferences have become a point of reference to assess the interests and achievements of astrophysical research in Spain. The most important and current topics of modern Astrophysics were taken into accountat thepreliminarymeeting,aswell as the numberandqualityofparticipants and their contributions, to select the invited speakers and oral contributors. We took a week to enjoy the high quality contributions submitted by Spanish astronomers to the Scienti?c Organizing Committee. The selection was dif?cult. Commands that could be added to Algol and could increase its scope are described, including multiplication and division and the use of brackets. The idea of labeling or naming a command is also explained, along with a command allowing two alternative results. Most of the important features of Algol syntax are discussed, and examples of compound statements (that is, sets of commands enclosed by a begin ... end command) are given. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the digital computer and how it works using a list of instructions known as a program. The "punched-tape" method of feeding information into a computer is described together with the flexowriter. The next chapter provides an overview of Algol by studying a very simple program and comparing it with the same sequence of instructions written in normal English. The third chapter is about building a program, first by increasing the complexity of the actual computation and then economizing on memory stores. Subsequent chapters focus on how computer programs can be built up of simple commands; labeling or naming a command; facilities in the Algol language which allow the addition of a second alternative command to an if ... then statement; and the use of a flow diagram to translate a problem into Algol. The final chapter examines the method of running a program on a computer. This monograph will be of interest to computer programmers.
