In Colombia alone, there are more than 500.000 coffee farmers. These coffee farmers are faced with the challenges brought up by climate change. Changes in rainfall patterns, intense dry periods and faster spread of coffee pests are among the new problems these coffee farmers must face. However, to better understand the impact that global warming is having on the coffee supply chain it is relevant to examine the whole supply chain. This study analyses the Colombian coffee supply chain by qualitatively exploring how certain Stakeholders are being affected by climate change and what adaptation strategies they are implementing. The research proposes a conceptual framework to analyze coffee supply chains together with the latest synthesis report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and concepts of supply chain resilience. Its primal source of data is constructed through semi-structured interviews with Stakeholders of the Colombian coffee supply chain. The conceptual framework allowed for a better understanding of the dynamics experienced by these Stakeholders regarding climate change. Adaptation strategies and impacts due to climate change were stablished for every Stakeholder. The conceptual framework permitted a construction of a series of recommendations to improve the resilience of the Colombian coffee supply chain. The research shows that the coffee supply chain is being affected by climate change. Disruptions are having an impact on quality and quantity of coffee produced and there is the need to strength the communication channels that connect the various Stakeholders to secure the future of coffee production.

It also provides guidance on how to create a “win-win†? situation so that climate change policies contribute to poverty reduction and poverty-reduction policies contribute to climate change mitigation and resilience building. The key finding of the report is that climate change represents a significant obstacle to the sustained eradication of poverty, but future impacts on poverty are determined by policy choices: rapid, inclusive, and climate-informed development can prevent most short-term impacts whereas immediate pro-poor, emissions-reduction policies can drastically limit long-term ones.
