Book Doing Drugs and Dropping Out

Download or read book Doing Drugs and Dropping Out written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the societal costs of substance abuse--especially cocaine and crack addition--and dropping out of school. It is organized around three themes: (1) the impact of cocaine and crack abuse in terms of crime, public spending, and lost productivity; (2) policies that move addicts away from crack; and (3) policies that reduce the high school dropout rate. Based on extant literature, the report quantifies a bottom-line cost of drug abuse to have been between $60.4 billion and $124.9 billion in 1988, a figure that reflects the costs of health care, economic loss, and law enforcement relating to substance abuse. Impact also is assessed in terms of private and social issues. In evaluating the success of policies that have effectively moved addicts away from drugs, important questions concerning criteria for success, motivation for drug use, and addiction are explored. Law enforcement, treatment, educational, and prevention policies are evaluated. The current literature on testing, outpatient treatment, and peer programs to reduce the motivation toward drug abuse and to move addicts away from cocaine and crack is reviewed. In response to the issue of dropout prevention, the report recommends a rethinking of the structure of high schools within a collaborative context involving parents, schools, and communities. Included in the report are a working bibliography and a community service booklet that deals with the issues of this report on a local community level. (NB)

Book The Education drug Use Connection

Download or read book The Education drug Use Connection written by Jerald G. Bachman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does success in school protect teenagers from drug use? Does drug use impair scholastic success? This book tackles a key issue in adolescent development and health - the education-drug use connection. The authors examine the links and likely causal connections between educational experiences, delinquent behavior, and adolescent use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. The book uses data from the University of Michigan's Monitoring the Future project. It focuses on a large and nationally representative sample of 8th grade students in the United States who were initially surveyed in 1991-1993 and then followed over the vitally important developmental period between ages 14 and 22. The volume uses a variety of statistical analysis techniques, and the findings can be understood by individuals with limited, as well as with extensive, backgrounds in research design. The findings convincingly demonstrate that if young people can be successful in school, it can improve a broad range of outcomes in their lives, not the least of which is their ability to resist pressures to use drugs. The book provides: a summary of the findings and conclusions; a review of relevant literature; a detailed discussion of the survey and analysis methods; the academic attainment of those in the longitudinal panel; the delinquent behaviors of panel members as they relate to measures of educational success; and the patterns of initiation, continuation, and cessation for each substance: cigarettes, marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. This book is intended for anyone who deals with education and/or substance use, including educational, developmental, and social psychologists; sociologists; epidemiologists; educators; and policy makers. The analysis of panel survey data, using a variety of techniques, will also appeal to survey methodologists and students.

Book TIP 35 Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment Updated 2019

Download or read book TIP 35 Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment Updated 2019 written by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Book An Analysis of the Relationship Between Substance Use Selected Demographics and Academic Achievement Among Middle School Aged Youth in an Urban Midwestern County

Download or read book An Analysis of the Relationship Between Substance Use Selected Demographics and Academic Achievement Among Middle School Aged Youth in an Urban Midwestern County written by Kristina Noel Knight and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Among adolescents, use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana have been associated with numerous health risks and compromised education outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between substance use, selected demographics and academic achievement among middle school aged youth in an urban Midwestern county. Methods: Secondary analyses were conducted based on data from the 2012 Cuyahoga County Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). Univariate analyses were conducted to provide a descriptive profile, bivariate analyses assessed associations between variables, and multivariate analyses were conducted to establish odds ratios. Results: Ever or current use of alcohol was the most prevalent drug, alone or in combination with other drugs. The exception to this finding was related to the current use of marijuana and tobacco use. Academic achievement was significantly associated with sex, race, and SES. There was a significant association with ever or current use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana with grade level and race. High academic achievers were more likely to be never or not current users of drugs. Low academic achievers were between 1.7-2.4 times more likely to be current or ever users of drugs. Further, low academic achievers were between 2-3 times more likely to be ever or current poly drug users. Conclusions: Use of alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana is associated with lower academic achievement. Exploration into the use of alcohol, particularly related to perception of risk and parental permissiveness should be explored. Multi-product and multi-drug use related to the use of little cigars among this population should be further explored. Finally, research related to other categories of risk behavior and their relationship to academic achievement have the potential to improve both health and educational outcomes.
