Book The Morality of Happiness

Download or read book The Morality of Happiness written by Julia Annas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-08-19 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient ethical theories, based on the notions of virtue and happiness, have struck many as an attractive alternative to modern theories. But we cannot find out whether this is true until we understand ancient ethics--and to do this we need to examine the basic structure of ancient ethical theory, not just the details of one or two theories. In this book, Annas brings together the results of a wide-ranging study of ancient ethical philosophy and presents it in a way that is easily accessible to anyone with an interest in ancient or modern ethics. She examines the fundamental notions of happiness and virtue, the role of nature in ethical justification and the relation between concern for self and concern for others. Her careful examination of the ancient debates and arguments shows that many widespread assumptions about ancient ethics are quite mistaken. Ancient ethical theories are not egoistic, and do not depend for their acceptance on metaphysical theories of a teleological kind. Most centrally, they are recognizably theories of morality, and the ancient disputes about the place of virtue in happiness can be seen as akin to modern disputes about the demands of morality.

Download or read book Good Entertainment written by Byung-Chul Han and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosopher considers entertainment, in all its totalizing variety—infotainment, edutainment, servotainment—and traces the notion through Kant, Zen Buddhism, Heidegger, Kafka, and Rauschenberg. In Good Entertainment, Byung-Chul Han examines the notion of entertainment—its contemporary ubiquity, and its philosophical genealogy. Entertainment today, in all its totalizing variety, has an apparently infinite capacity for incorporation: infotainment, edutainment, servotainment, confrontainment. Entertainment is held up as a new paradigm, even a new credo for being—and yet, in the West, it has had inescapably negative connotations. Han traces Western ideas of entertainment, considering, among other things, the scandal that arose from the first performance of Bach's Saint Matthew's Passion (deemed too beautiful, not serious enough); Kant's idea of morality as duty and the entertainment value of moralistic literature; Heidegger's idea of the thinker as a man of pain; Kafka's hunger artist and the art of negativity, which takes pleasure in annihilation; and Robert Rauschenberg's refusal of the transcendent. The history of the West, Han tells us, is a passion narrative, and passion appears as a killjoy. Achievement is the new formula for passion, and play is subordinated to production, gamified. And yet, he argues, at their core, passion and entertainment are not entirely different. The pure meaninglessness of entertainment is adjacent to the pure meaning of passion. The fool's smile resembles the pain-racked visage of Homo doloris. In Good Entertainment, Han explores this paradox.

Book The Achievement of Cometanhood

Download or read book The Achievement of Cometanhood written by Cometan and published by Astral Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Achievement of Cometanhood is the one-hundred and twenty-seventh instalment in the Little Blue Book Series and comprises the sixth discourse of the Dodecadoxy, which is itself the twelfth and final disquisition of the Omnidoxy, Astronism’s founding tome. Within this single-discourse publication, an extensive amount of insentensations (over one-hundred and fifty) are afforded to the topic of cometanology and the nature of cometanhood as well as its relationship to the rest of Astronism. The Little Blue Book Series was created and first published by Cometan himself as a way to simplify and commercialise the immensity of the two million word length of the Omnidoxy into smaller, more bite-size publications. A successful series from its very first published entry, the Little Blue Book Series has gone on to become a symbol of Astronist commercial literature and a way for Cometan’s words to reach readers of all ages and abilities who remain daunted by the beauty and yet the sheer extensiveness of the Omnidoxy as the longest religious text in history.

Book excerpt: From the renowned psychologist who introduced the world to “growth mindset” comes this updated edition of the million-copy bestseller—featuring transformative insights into redefining success, building lifelong resilience, and supercharging self-improvement. “Through clever research studies and engaging writing, Dweck illuminates how our beliefs about our capabilities exert tremendous influence on how we learn and which paths we take in life.”—Bill Gates, GatesNotes “It’s not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest.” After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love—to transform their lives and your own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has this generation missed the path of achievers?, Has this generation lossed the inner enrichment that enhances the outer world?, what is the greatest discovery of all time? - These and many other questions are answered in this book. The purpose of this book is to help with the attainment of inner- balance and inner -serenity in our day to day activities. We live in a generation that everything moves so fast, so much so that we seem to have lossed that inner drive that produces great achievers due to focusing on the 'outer world'; Young achievers seeks to stir in you this all- important principle of 'Living Life Inside Out.' Above all is to help the youths to discover themselves and connect with the 'higher self' for greater achievement in Life. The book examines man's travel to the moon, the discovery of oil, the making of airplanes along with many more great achievements, BUT the greatest discovery in the history of man is self-discovery. When you discover yourself, you know who you are and you can achieve anything in Life. When you know who you are, is going to help you know exactly what to do in Life; you will maintain focus and also help you to live a decent and balanced life. 'Young Achievers' discloses that all the great achievers in life realized the treasure within before they went ahead to achieve great things. It goes on to explain that inside every man lies the slumbering power and potential to be whatever they want to be and to achieve whatever they want to achieve in life. Self discovery is the DNA of self-enlightenment. it also states when an 'error' is planted in the mind of the youth he or she will doubtless do things without even knowing why he or she is doing them - chapter two talks about mounting guard on our minds ; controlling the thoughts we allow into the fertile ground of our minds - we compared the mind to a fertile garden in that if we take care of this garden by way of nurturing and cultivating it will blossom and give us results beyond our expectation. We also talked about the power of the mind and citing that the secret of great achievers has been their ability to harness and unlock the potential of their minds. The mind gives back to anyone what he ask for, meaning the mind can be conditioned by a technique we call 'programming' - by that we programme the mind to be seasoned for greater works. The big idea we seek to share with the youth is that they can create whatever they want in their lives through the use of the life giving principle of 'living life inside out'. Life is best lived when it is lived inside out. Various techniques are revealed to help youths and anyone live their live's inside out.

Book Academic Achievement of First Generation Mexican American Males in a Community College

Download or read book Academic Achievement of First Generation Mexican American Males in a Community College written by Carlos C. Peña and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the complexities of successful attainment and achievement of 10 Mexican American males in a rural Southwest community college. This study strives to offer insights concerning the questions: (a) what behavioral patterns of current family, peers, and conditions in school have influenced the educational decisions of these Mexican American males? and (b) what social conditions motivate these Mexican American males to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity? This qualitative research was also aimed at establishing and understanding how a selected number of Mexican American males have achieved academic success. The researcher chose 10 men with either an associate of arts or an associate of science degrees for an in-depth interview and used a semi-structured interview guide in an effort to prompt oral discourse. The interviewer posed questions concerning academic conditions, family impact, college environment, and financial issues. The responses to the questions led to similar themes involved in these students' course completion and graduation. The researcher used a theoretical framework using Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) in which he suggests that not only environmental factors, but motivational factors along with self-regulatory mechanisms affect an individual's behavior. This research illustrated the conditions that facilitated reaching the participant's educational goal and mission, which was to complete a two-year degree at the community college. The inquiry examined the behavioral patterns that have been an influence on the educational decisions of these Mexican American males, and what social conditions have motivated them to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity.

Download or read book Achievement written by Gwen Bradford and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the magisterial to the mundane, achievements play a role in the best kind of human life, and many people think that they are of such importance that they are worth pursuing at the expense of serious sacrifices. Yet for all that, no philosophers have devoted more than a few short passages to discerning what makes achievements valuable, or even what makes something an achievement to begin with. Gwen Bradford presents the first systematic account of what achievements are, and what it is about them that makes them worth doing. It turns out that more things count as achievements than we might have thought, and that what makes them valuable isn't something we usually think of as good. It turns out that difficulty, perhaps surprisingly, plays a central part in characterizing achievements and their value: achievements are worth the effort. But just what does it mean for something to be difficult, and why is it valuable? A thorough analysis of the nature of difficulty is given, and ultimately, the best account of the value of achievements taps into perfectionist axiology. But not just any perfectionist theory of value will do, and in this book we see a new perfectionist theory developed that succeeds in capturing the value of achievement better than its predecessors.
